Your tasks:

The Leibniz ScienceCampus AMR-PLAS investigates how microorganisms adapt during antibiotic treatment in order to better understand bacterial plasticity and gain deeper insight into the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The successful candidate will investigate genomic and non-genomic mechanisms of bacterial plasticity in clinically relevant pathogens, including ESKAPE pathogens and mycobacteria, with a particular focus on the phenotypic plasticity of antimicrobial resistance in Corynebacterium striatum. The project aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying AMR.

As a doctoral researcher, you will become part of the Leibniz ScienceCampus AMR-PLAS, joining a cohort of seven PhD candidates based at the Research Center Borstel and Kiel University. You will work closely with an early-career principal investigator and benefit from a structured training programme, comprehensive methodological supervision, and continuous scientific exchange within an interdisciplinary research environment.

Your profile:

  • a completed university degree (Master’s) in microbiology, biochemistry or molecular biology, or a related subject, with a very good final grade
  • excellent expertise in the field of microbiology
  • experience with molecular genetic methods (cloning, strain construction, genetic screens)
  • experience in handling bacterial cultures, as well as standard microbiological methods and sterile working techniques
  • basic knowledge of bioinformatics and statistics
  • English (at least C1 level) – spoken and written

  • experience with Corynebacteria (this also includes experience with non-pathogenic Corynebacteria)
  • experience with single-molecule microscopy
  • experience using ‘R’ or similar statistical software
  • knowledge of mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and resistance testing methods
  • publications in the field of microbiology/genetics
