Postdoctoral position in rhizosphere chemical ecology and secondary metabolite networks

You will investigate how soil microorganisms biotransform secondary metabolites and how these transformations influence microbial interactions and community assembly. Using simple synthetic microbial communities (SynComs), the project will explore the fate of microbial and plant-derived metabolites in soil and their role in mediating chemical communication between microorganisms. The work will combine microbiology, microbial ecology, and metabolite analysis to uncover fundamental mechanisms governing microbial interactions in soil ecosystems. You will be part of the research teams of Associate Professor Lars Behrendt and Professor Lars Jelsbak. The Behrendt group investigates how individual microorganisms and microbial communities respond to environmental changes, with a particular focus on microfluidic model systems. The Jelsbak group focuses on soil and rhizosphere microbial ecology, specifically the roles of microbial secondary metabolites and their potential applications in biocontrol. This position is part of the Center for Excellence in Microbial Secondary Metabolites (http://www.cemist.dtu.dk), led by Professor Lone Gram, where you will join a world-leading team at the forefront of microbial secondary metabolite research. You will collaborate closely with microbiologists, natural product chemists, and bioinformaticians in a dynamic, creative, and stimulating environment. Our recently renovated laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art technology for high-content imaging, bacterial molecular research, and analytical chemistry. While the Postdoc project focuses on secondary metabolites in natural systems, the CeMiSt center also applies this fundamental research to the development of novel medicinal drugs. Responsibilities and qualificationsWe are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated candidate with a background in microbiology or natural product chemistry, and a strong interest in bacterial interactions and secondary metabolites. The ideal candidate is passionate about exploring the microbial- and plant derived secondary metabolites and their role and fate in ecology of soil microbiomes, with a particular focus on how secondary metabolites facilitate microbial interactions. You should be excited by the opportunity to leverage novel tools and analytical methods to investigate the role, fate and function of microbial secondary metabolites. The role requires good organizational skills, a structured approach to work, and a collaborative spirit. PhD in sex-specific genetic determinants of stroke risk in atrial fibrillation

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine, Aalborg University, a PhD stipend in genetic analysis and cardiovascular disease is available for appointment from October 1, 2026 or soon hereafter. The stipend is available within the doctoral program “Biostatistics and Epidemiology”, and the duration of the position is three years. Your work tasks    This PhD project sits at the intersection of genetics, epidemiology, and cardiovascular medicine. Using large-scale genetic and health registry data, you will investigate sex-specific differences in stroke risk among patients with atrial fibrillation. Your work will involve applying Mendelian randomization and other causal inference methods to uncover potential genetic pathways contributing to disparities in stroke risk. The project combines statistical modeling with clinical insight, aiming to improve risk prediction and inform sex-specific prevention strategies in atrial fibrillation patients. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with the Center for Clinical Data Science (CLINDA), Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Aalborg University. Postdoc Position – Giant E3 Ligases as Cellular Guardians – (Clausen lab)

The Project Cells face constant threats including microbial invasion, proteotoxic and organellar stress. Giant ubiquitin E3 ligases form the frontline of cellular defence, acting as colossal molecular machines that detect danger signals and neutralize threats by tagging unwanted molecules for removal. Despite their central role in innate immunity and cellular homeostasis, these mega-enzymes remain among the most poorly understood components of the ubiquitin system, being too large and flexible for predictive modelling, yet too complex for conventional structural approaches. This combination of biological impact, mechanistic mystery and technical challenge makes them exceptional study systems. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to investigate how giant E3 ligases act as guardians against diverse cellular stresses. Key questions include: How do they recognize macro-substrates such as microbial epitopes, damaged organelles and RNA–protein condensates? How do they coordinate ubiquitination of non-canonical substrates, including lipids, sugars, and RNA, and what happens downstream? And how do disease mutations alter their activity to drive cancer, metabolic or autoimmune disorders? About the Group Our group explores unconventional degradation pathways located in the “dark corners” of ubiquitin signalling – mechanisms often dismissed as niche or technically challenging. Following this route, we discovered protein arginine phosphorylation as a bacterial degron, developed BacPROTAC antibiotics against drug-resistant mycobacteria and determined the first structures of giant E3 ligases including HUWE1, RNF213, BIRC6 and UBR4. Furthermore, we showed that ATP serves as a danger signal directing RNF213 against bacterial invaders and that ZNFX1 ubiquitinates and compacts RNA into RNPs to control antiviral immunity. Together, these discoveries set the stage for the next challenge: understanding how giant E3 ligases extend ubiquitin signalling beyond proteins and control it across diverse cellular stress pathways. To explore this uncharted ubiquitin territory, we will combine cryo-EM, XLMS, proteomics, in vitro reconstitution, chemical biology, protein design and cellular assays, with cryo-ET looming at the horizon. A particular strength is our expertise in working with E3 mega-complexes that remain inaccessible to predictive tools such as AlphaFold3, making direct experimental investigation both necessary and rewarding.  About the Place The IMP is part of the Vienna BioCenter, one of the world’s leading life science campuses. Often, blood samples can be incorrectly assessed due to gas contamination, delayed analysis time or other disturbances. If these problems remain unidentified, they can result in incorrect clinical decisions and poor patient management. In this PhD project, you will collect experimental data describing the changes in blood due to pre-analytical errors, and build mathematical models to describe these changes. This work can have real clinical and commercial impact, potentially resulting in digital software solutions for identifying and compensating for errors in blood measurements. The work will be in collaboration with Roche Diagnostics International, a leading manufacturer of blood gas analyzers based in Switzerland, and the candidate will be part of an international network in this area. At Department of Health Science and Technology we conduct research, teaching, and innovation within biomedicine, engineering, sports science, public health, neuroscience, psychology, and physiotherapy to develop sustainable technological solutions. Research Profile We seek candidates holding a PhD degree in medicine, biomedicine, veterinary medicine, or a related field, with a strong research profile within: Immunology (e.g., dendritic cell biology, host–immune interactions, immunotherapy, cancer vaccines, STING signalling, vaccine development), and/or Medical Microbiology (e.g., microbial pathogenesis, infectious diseases, virus research, antibiotic resistance, microbe–host interactions, microbial treatment in clinical settings). The successful candidate will join the Medical Microbiology and Immunology research group, which focuses on microbial pathogenicity, host–immune interactions, antibiotic resistance, and vaccine development. The department is well equipped for advanced experimental research, including: Cell culture and molecular biology laboratories Protein analysis and cloning facilities Classified microbiological laboratories Light, fluorescence, confocal and electron microscopy Mass spectrometry Rodent facilities Candidates may contribute to existing research areas or establish an independent research profile within the group. The position includes research-based teaching primarily within the Medicine programme, but also potentially within other bachelor’s and master’s programmes at the department.
