Research Assistant (PhD Student) for developing sustainable sugar beet production methods

The Institute for Sugar Beet Research gGmbH at the University of Göttingen is a nationwide research institution in Germany dedicated to developing sustainable sugar beet production methods. Located in Göttingen, the institute is seeking to fill a position for a second Research Assistant (PhD student) (m/f/d) within the Department of Phytomedicine. This position is a three-year fixed-term appointment within the project “Generation of recessive resistance to aphid-transmitted viruses in sugar beet using novel breeding technologies – a case study on establishing targeted genome modification in a versatile crop – RecREdit.” The position offers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate. Salary is based on the German public sector pay scale (TV-L, pay grade EG 13, 65%). In preliminary studies, modern breeding technologies have enabled the generation of recessive resistance to the beet chlorosis virus by knocking out the susceptibility factor eIF(iso)4E in sugar beet. The aim of this project is to characterize the host-virus interaction in detail using protein-protein interaction studies and novel genomic techniques for targeted gene modification. The main focus will be on reducing fitness losses and broadening resistance to other virus species. About the position The Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science (KBM) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3‑year PhD position in food microbiology and fermentation process science, linked to the research group SciFood: Food Quality and Sustainability. Modern food processing urgently needs solutions that ensure food safety while reducing food waste. Bioprotective cultures are increasingly used in fermented foods to inhibit spoilage organisms and pathogens, yet their performance varies across substrates and processing conditions. To fully exploit their potential, we need deeper mechanistic knowledge of how processing modulates the functionality of these food‑grade bacteria. The goal of this PhD project is to investigate how food processing modulates the bioprotective performance and functionality of different starter cultures used in food production. The work will combine advanced proteomics, molecular microbiology with food fermentation models and pilot‑scale validation at the FoodPilotPlant Norway (link). PhD fellowship at the Interface of Systems Neuroscience and Cancer Biomechanics Research

About the position A 4-year PhD position is available at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo. This is a unique collaboration between the labs of Associate Professor Coen Campsteijn  (mechanistic cancer biology) and Professor Koen Vervaeke (systems neuroscience). You will join GLIOFORCE, a recently established and interdisciplinary consortium merging biology, physics and engineering to describe, model and target cellular biomechanics during invasion of aggressive brain cancer, Glioblastoma. By targeting cancer cell mechano-adaptation, GLIOFORCE aims to open up innovative avenues for treating aggressive cancers like Glioblastoma. More about the position We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in neuroscience, cancer research and advanced microscopy. You will: Track cancer invasion in real-time using state-of-the-art in vivo two-photon microscopy in mice, and live-cell confocal microscopy using ex vivo 3D models. Genetically manipulate cancer cells using CRISPR/Cas9 to identify and target molecular mechanisms enabling invasion. Study how neuronal activity and brain anatomy influence cancer spread using advanced ex vivo 3D models. Collaborate closely with three other PhD students in a supportive, cross-disciplinary team. About the project We invite applications for a PhD candidate to join an interdisciplinary research project focused on zooplankton ecology and its role in the oceanic biological carbon pump under the supervision of Associate Professor Jose Landeira and co-supervisor Associate Professor Kang Nian Yap . Oceans have sequestered approximately 30–50% of anthropogenic CO₂ since the beginning of the industrial revolution, mitigating the rise in atmospheric CO2 and, consequently, global warming. However, the mechanisms through which carbon is transported into the deep ocean remain poorly understood. The project will investigate how zooplankton contributes to carbon sequestration through vertical migrations, using a combination of optical and acoustic instruments to observe and quantify their dynamics in the water column. A key objective is the development and improvement of physiological proxies and endpoints to better estimate zooplankton respiration and its impact on oceanic carbon fluxes. The position offers training in field observations, advanced instrumentation, experiments with zooplankton organisms and physiological analyses within an international research environment. PhD Research Fellow in Molecular Biology (Parasitology and Gene Editing) There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Molecular biology with focus on parasitology and gene editing at the Department of Biological Sciences. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching at the Department). The position is subject to the project “Deciphering Nutrient Uptake Mechanisms in Salmon Louse Oocytes for Gene Editing and Treatment Development”, which is financed by the Research Council of Norway under the Groundbreaking Research program. About the project/work tasks: The project aims to develop gene editing methods for salmon lice. Salmon lice are parasites of Atlantic salmon and cause immense costs for the salmon farming industry every year. Effective and sustainable treatment methods are currently lacking. To develop such methods, a better understanding of salmon louse biology is crucial. To this end, we want to establish CRISPR-based gene editing in the salmon louse. The small size of its oocytes poses a challenge for the delivery of the gene editing compounds. Therefore, CRISPR is not available in this species, yet. To overcome this, we want to investigate the mechanism how nutrients are transported into the oocytes by the lice and then use this mechanism for transporting the gene editing compounds into the oocytes. The PhD research fellow will be part of the Sea Lice research group, composed of several researchers with extensive experience in salmon louse biology. The experiments entail molecular cloning, recombinant protein production and in situ hybridisation as well as CRISPR experiments in lice with subsequent analyses of genotypes and phenotypes. There might be the opportunity for a three-month stay at a partner research institute in Germany for performing cell culture experiments, depending on further funding. The project and position are planned to begin on 01.08.2026. Qualifications and personal qualities: Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in Molecular Biology, Biological Sciences, Fish health or similar. The PhD-student will be connected to the NFR financed project “PFAS in Agriculture: Risks and Mitigation (PFARM)” led by NIVA (2026-2029). One important aim of the PFARM-project is to make a risk assessment for PFAS for Norwegian conditions. The data from the PhD-student will focus on the understanding of uptake mechanisms of PFAS and lay the foundation for the risk assessment that will primarily be done by NIVA. Per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence and tendency to bioaccumulate, represent a growing global concern. Their accumulation in water, soil, biota, and plant‑based foods poses a significant threat to food safety.
