Strodthoff) Neonatology (Prof. A. Hilgendorff) and Laboratory Medicine (Prof. A. Petersmann) a research group on gene-environment interactions. Your tasks The three projects will be on Genetic and environmental drivers of aortic aneurysm formation in mouse and man (project “aneurysm”) Antimicrobial resistance and horizontal gene transfer (project AMR) Multiomics approaches to improve diagnostics in multigenerational pedigrees and neonates with rare diseases (project: Genomics) Your profile A prerequisite for the position is the successful completion of an academic university degree (Master or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a neighboring discipline with a focus on microbiology, immunology, cardiovascular disease, genetics or inflammation. For project 3 a master’s degree in computational science is also eligible. In addition, previous experience in patient-oriented basic science is an advantage, which is reflected by relevant publications and/or prior projects. About Us The position is located within the interdisciplinary project “Governing the Invisible, the Vast, and the Complex: Linking Local Maritime Histories, Microbial Marine Life, and Emerging Global-Scale Effects.”  The project aims to establish a new interdisciplinary foundation between the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Global biogeochemical cycles, particularly the carbon cycle, are crucial for the Earth’s climate and habitability. Human activities have altered these cycles. However, the historical causes and governance of such changes are still poorly understood. The project connects three areas: microbial ecology and biogeochemistry, maritime and global history, and the governance of societal and ecological transformation processes. Your tasks The research associate represents the natural science component of the project. Key aspects include the interdisciplinary development of cross-disciplinary concepts and analysis routines for large, heterogeneous datasets. Interdisciplinary scientific publications will be co-authored with other postdoctoral researchers from the social sciences and humanities, as well as the multidisciplinary project management team. About us The Cluster of Excellence is a joint project of the Universities of Bremen and Oldenburg and a consortium of five partner institutions: Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research, Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research, Constructor University and the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg – Institute for Advanced Study. Your tasks Funded by the German Excellence Strategy, the cluster quantifies exchange processes at the ocean floor and investigates their role in the Earth system. The cluster’s research portfolio consists of projects that (i) decipher the processes that control the transport of biogenic particles to the ocean floor under changing climate conditions, (ii) balance the transfer of carbon and other elements between the ocean floor and seawater, (iii) investigate how ecosystems on the ocean floor react to environmental changes and (iv) develop scenarios for a “warmer world” from climate archives on the ocean floor with the help of climate models. Research Associate Pre Doctoral Position in Virology and Mucus Barrier Research

The collaborative project ONEMUC – Respiratory Mucus as a One Health Interface – investigates how the composition and structure of mucosal barriers (mucus) influence the zoonotic transmission of influenza A viruses between animals and humans. The aim is to identify key molecular and ecological factors that determine whether viruses are intercepted or transmitted at the mucus barrier. ONEMUC thus makes an important contribution to a better understanding of zoonotic infections and to the development of new strategies for prevention and risk assessment in the One Health context. The sub-project conducted at the Free University of Berlin focuses on the role of respiratory mucus as an antiviral barrier, particularly the interaction of influenza viruses with defined mucus components. Mucus samples from various hosts (human, pig, bird) as well as from human cohorts exposed to different air qualities are analyzed biochemically and biophysically. Through this work, FU Berlin is making an important contribution to the understanding of mucus-mediated antiviral defense mechanisms and opening up new starting points for preventive strategies to reduce the risks of zoonotic transmission. Responsibilities include: – Chromatographic purification of mucins of various origins using FPLC – Development of standardized protocols for the purification and storage of mucins – Enzymatic fragmentation of mucins to create fragment libraries – Binding studies of mucins and their fragments to various influenza A viruses using microscale thermophoresis (MST) and solid-phase binding assays – Inhibition studies to evaluate how mucins and their fragments block the binding of influenza viruses to cell membranes. The aim of the research work is to identify enzymes involved in the temporary inactivation of gib-berellin phytohormones. The tasks of the position comprise: Selecting potential gene candidates from plant sequence datasets with bioinformatics tools Cloning of gene candidates from plants and screening in Nicotiana benthamiana Recombinant protein production and biochemical characterisation of enzymes in vitro Chemical analysis and purification of gibberellins from Nicotiana benthamiana or from a heterologous Aspergillus oryzae platform. The position also involves travelling to a kick-off meeting in Israel and a three-month research stay at Tel Aviv University, Israel. Who are we looking for? The successful candidate must hold a university science degree (diploma/master or equivalent) in the area of biochemistry, biotechnology, life science, biology, or related courses, ideally with a focus on plants. We expect above average grades, high motivation and interest in interdisciplinary research. In addition, we are looking for a candidate with the following: Experiences with heterologous gene expression and purification of proteins are required. Experiences with biochemical assays and their analysis by chromatography are required. Experience with cloning and general microbiology are required. Experience with bioinformatics analysis of large sequence datasets is desirable. Experiences with the purification of natural products by column chromatography and preparative HPLC are desirable. Very good written and oral English skills for working in an international team and to fulfil research tasks are required. The Division of Tropical Plant Production and Agricultural Systems Modeling (TROPAGS) of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, is pleased to announce and invite applications for a  Scientific researcher:  “Integration of genetics into process-based crop models to simulate biotic–abiotic stress interactions and their impacts in maize” This is a four-year 75% (29.85 hours/week) PhD position whitch will be filled as soon as possible to work on the DFG-funded MultiStress Research Unit 6101. It is open to all qualified individuals (m/f/d) who are eager to engage in cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research at the interface of crop modeling, genetics, environmental science, plant–biotic interactions and ecological dynamics. Context: MultiStress RU 6101 investigates how maize responds to multiple, interacting abiotic (eg, drought, nitrogen deficiency) and biotic (fungal disease; herbivory) stress factors. Through an integrated experimental–modeling approach, the project aims to improve our understanding and prediction of crop performance under complex stress environments. This PhD position is an integral part of the modeling subproject (SP6) of MultiStress RU and will focus on integrating the genetic make-up of different temperate and tropical maize genotypes into a new MultiStress crop model.
