Coordinating Project Leader position in veterinary diagnostics

Your job Would you like to play a crucial role in veterinary diagnostics and in the national crisis response to animal disease outbreaks? Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) is looking for a Coordinating Project Leader for the Diagnostics and Crisis Organisation (DCO) department. Will you join our team in Lelystad? The DCO is responsible for the delivery of veterinary diagnostics, including diagnostics for suspected notifiable animal diseases, export diagnostics, and routine diagnostics for a range of animal health programmes. The department plays a central role in national preparedness and crisis management during animal disease outbreaks. As a Coordinating Project Leader, you will make a direct contribution to animal health, help to strengthen a safe food chain, and support the prevention of the spread of zoonotic diseases. The team jointly coordinates diagnostic activities across the disciplines of virology, parasitology and bacteriology. You are the key point of reference within your area of expertise and an important contact during animal disease crises, thereby fulfilling a crucial role in safeguarding animal and public health in the Netherlands and across Europe. What will you do? As a Coordinating Project Leader, you will have two main areas of responsibility: Diagnostics and coordination Providing expert advice within the DCO to government bodies and industry on animal disease diagnostics. Providing substantive leadership in the execution of diagnostic testing (serology and agent detection) by a team of analysts, within a matrix organisation and in accordance with ISO 17025. Implementing and optimising new tests and techniques, in collaboration with, among others, researchers and animal disease experts. Steering validations and troubleshooting of diagnostic processes. Initiating and managing new internal projects. Being responsible for tasks within the National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) for notifiable animal diseases. Actively contributing to the crisis organisation and on-call services, including outside regular working hours. Acquisition and customer relations Acquiring new projects for the DCO and maintaining relationships with clients, including the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), other partners and private clients. Acting as a bridge between researchers within WBVR, internal assignments and business development. Actively sourcing and leading your own external projects within the field of bacteriology. Being involved as a subject-matter expert and researcher in projects. Your qualities Who are you? You are a connecting and proactive leader who knows how to motivate teams and deliver results in a complex, dynamic environment. You combine strong subject-matter expertise with excellent communication skills, decisiveness, and a keen eye for quality and safety. A completed degree in veterinary medicine or experience in microbiology, molecular biology, assay development, or diagnostics within the life sciences, particularly related to infectious diseases of animals or humans. Quality-oriented, with experience in ISO 17025 or comparable quality management systems. Experience in managing staff within a complex matrix organisation and laboratory environment. Strong in building and maintaining collaborations, both within and outside the organisation. Proactive, customer-focused, creative, and a true team player. The Department of Environmental Technology of Wageningen University & Research is looking for a PhD candidate within the research consortium BlueVantage. BlueVantage is a large research program with scientific and societal partners that aims to tackle growing water challenges by finding new ways to reuse water safely and sustainably. To that end, BlueVantage explores new treatment technologies to remove persistent organic micropollutants and recover valuable resources from water, thereby ensuring a clean water cycle for economy, ecology and society. The research in BlueVantage is divided over different thematic work packages in which a number of PhDs, their supervisors and societal partners together work on the ambitions of BlueVantage. This PhD-position will be performed in a work package focussed on developing a next generation of municipal wastewater treatment technologies. The research will be performed in collaboration with 3 other PhD-candidates, in close cooperation with the “Treatment plant of the future” initiative of the Waterboards and STOWA, several consulting firms and technology developers. You will develop novel approaches for anaerobic treatment of low concentrated wastewater using innovative concentration technologies and reactor designs to ultimately reach low effluent concentrations and energy-efficient and circular water treatment strategies. Specifically, your duties and responsibilities include: study fractionation of organic components of wastewater with novel technologies and assess the biodegradability of the different fractions; assess the optimal conditions for degradation of organic contaminants to different end products (i.e. building blocks for bio-based industry or energy carriers like methane); develop low-temperature microbial consortia capable of effectively removing dissolved organic contaminants; assess feasibility of the selected processes with respect to energy and product recovery; take part in BlueVantage activities, such as consortium meetings, workshops, stakeholder interaction and courses; pro-actively communicate your research findings with partners within and outside of the BlueVantage consortium; publish your research in peer-reviewed journals and present your research at (inter)national conferences. As researcher, you will be part of the project GRASP – Genomic-driven Risk Assessment of Plant-based foods. This project, funded by Plant2Food (Novo Nordisk Foundation), aims to predict behaviour of microbial sporeforming contaminants in plant-based foods to contribute to more sustainable food chains. The sporeforming pathogens Bacillus cereus and Clostridium botulinum harbor genetically different subgroups with very distinct growth behavior and heat resistance. Critical knowledge gaps exist on the behavior of these subgroups in plant-based foods, while this is key to develop strategies to control these pathogenic contaminants. Hereby GRASP aims to investigate prevalence, genetic diversity and behaviour of these sporeforming pathogens in plant-based foods. This knowledge will be used to develop a genomic-driven risk assessment that will be integrated into a validated user-friendly model tool. The GRASP project is a collaboration with the Danish Technical University (DTU). The project at Wageningen focusses on Bacillus cereus and the DTU project partner focusses on the sporeformer Clostridium botulinum. In your role as researcher (60% of your time) you will: quantify the heat resistance, germination and outgrowth kinetics of Bacillus cereus. BlueVantage is a large research program with scientific and societal partners that aims to tackle growing water challenges by finding new ways to reuse water safely and sustainably. To that end, BlueVantage explores new treatment technologies to remove persistent organic micropollutants (OMPS) and recover valuable resources from water, thereby ensuring a clean water cycle . The research in BlueVantage is divided over different thematic work packages in which a number of PhDs, their supervisors and societal partners together work on the ambitions of BlueVantage. This PhD-position will be performed in a work package focussed on tools for designing and assessing circular water systems. The work in this work package will be performed in collaboration with another PhD-candidate and post-doc. You will study the safety of crop production in relation to the use of treated wastewater for irrigation. Your focus will be on organic micropollutants (OMPs) and PFAS, and if their presence in treated wastewater limits safe reuse of that water for irrigation, especially in terms of environmental and crop safety. Currently there are no clear guidelines for the presence of OMPs and PFAS in irrigation water. You will perform crucial research to help develop these guidelines while also exploring the mechanisms by which OMPs and PFAS are taken up in plants. Specifically, your duties and responsibilities include: build a model for transfer of OMPs and PFAS from treated wastewaters to crops. To that end you will collect and optimise available models and prioritise the different contaminants; perform experiments to validate the developed model.
