PhD Position in Bluetongue virus correlates of protection

Your job Are you eager to start your PhD at the intersection of virology, immunology and vector-borne diseases? In this position, you will investigate how immunity against Bluetongue virus develops and how it can be leveraged to stop transmission. Working on a highly relevant topic following the recent emergence of BTV-3, your research will directly contribute to the development of next-generation vaccines and strategies to protect animal health. In this lab-oriented project you will investigate correlates of protection of the vector-borne Bluetongue virus (BTV). With the emergence of BTV-3 in 2023 the animal‑health landscape in the Netherlands rapidly reshaped, affecting thousands of ruminants and causing major health and economic losses. While recently approved emergency vaccines helped to reduce disease severity, they don’t yet fully prevent infection or halt transmission—and key gaps remain in our understanding of how immunity, viremia, and vector transmission interact. To drive the next generation of BTV vaccines, we aim to pinpoint the immune responses that truly protect animals and stop spread. Our central idea: if vaccination can push viremia below the threshold needed for Culicoides midges to become infected, we may block transmission even without sterilizing immunity. Identifying this threshold—and the immunological mechanisms behind it – will enable smarter, more targeted vaccination strategies. Your responsibilities You will be responsible for: Defining the relationship between infectious bluetongue virus and viral genome in biological samples; Identifying the minimal level of bluetongue viremia required for vector-borne transmission; Determining the correlates of protection against BTV infection and transmission. You will work here You will be working in the arbovirus expertise team in the department of One Health Virology at Wageningen Bioveterinary Research in Lelystad. You will be directly supervised by Dr. Barry Rockx (Expertise team lead Vector-borne viruses), and Dr. Melle Holwerda (Head of the national reference laboratory for Bluetongue), and will work in a multidisciplinary team. This project offers ample opportunities for local and international collaboration, guaranteeing a dynamic working environment. This project is initiated as part of a public-private partnership between WBVR and multiple sector parties. The research in the vector-borne virus team of WBVR focuses on understanding and controlling vector-borne viral diseases of veterinary and public health concern, such as bluetongue, Rift Valley fever, and tick-borne encephalitis. The team is specialized in diagnostics and surveillance to detect and monitor pathogens; studying vector-virus-host interactions to explore how viruses cause disease and spread between vectors (like midges, mosquitoes, and ticks) and vertebrate hosts; developing arboviral countermeasures such as vaccines. Furthermore, experimental data is used in transmission modeling and risk assessments to help predict outbreaks and evaluate the impact of various intervention strategies, aiding in veterinary and public health preparedness and response. Your qualities We are looking for a candidate with the following qualities: a MSc degree in biology, animal sciences, biomedical sciences or a related discipline; strong interest in infectious disease research, vector biology, and host-pathogen interactions; broad experience in virological techniques (virus culture, titration and neutralization), (primary) tissue and cell culture, molecular biology (qPCR, reverse genetics) and immunology (FACS, immunoassays, fluorescence microscopy); good communicative skills (both oral and written) and a collaborative spirit; analytical skills for data interpretation and statistical analysis; an Article 9 of the Experiments on Animals Act and experience working with laboratory animals is preferred. PhD Position in The Cellular Basis of Plant Regeneration

Would you like to be part of innovative research on the genetic, molecular, cellular and physiological basis of plant life? This PhD position offers a supportive research environment where you can contribute to fundamental plant biology with relevance for future crop innovation. Plants have the fascinating ability to regenerate from a single cell or a damaged tissue. This ability requires extensive changes in, amongst other things, cell programming and patterning. Current methods for hormone-induced regeneration in tissue culture often give limited and unpredictable results. Even in optimal conditions only a few cells or groups of cells make the switch to regeneration and yet fewer manage to form the organised cell patterns of a new shoot or root. Cell and tissue polarity guide, for example, local accumulation of molecules and cell division patterns, which are essential processes during regeneration. In this PhD project, you will combine studies on cell polarity, cell division and plant hormones to investigate how cellular patterns and signals help specific cells to switch to regeneration and be successful. Reliable and reproducible plant regeneration is a key factor for successful propagation of many crops, yet detailed insights in their regeneration processes are limited. In this project, you will use tomato as a main model species, supplemented with work in Arabidopsis thaliana. You will use molecular techniques, cell biology, tissue culture and advanced imaging to study cellular processes during regeneration. PhD Position in Single Molecule Biophysics

Are you curious about how proteins influence the mechanical properties of DNA? And do you enjoy research at the single-molecule level to answer fundamental questions in biology? These structural proteins govern the physical topology of the genome, translating molecular-level interactions into the large-scale architecture required for living cells. Disruptions in these structural processes are often linked to severe genetic disorders and cancer, underscoring the importance of understanding their mechanics. Our lab employs single-molecule biophysics to investigate the fundamental properties of protein-DNA interactions. In this project, you will use optical tweezers to probe the dynamics and force-responses of structural proteins at the single-molecule level. The goal is to uncover the physical principles that drive DNA organisation and how their dysfunction contributes to disease. Pushing the boundaries of peptide formulations, you will design and analyse next‑generation functional peptide systems using advanced synthesis, automation and data‑driven workflows at Radboud University’s interdisciplinary Robotlab. Peptide-based systems are emerging as versatile building blocks for next-generation therapeutic modalities and bio-based materials. While the accessible space of possible peptide sequences and formulation protocols is vast, only a small fraction yields systems with favourable formulation and functional properties. The rise of automation and advanced data analysis methods promises to make targeted navigation of this large space possible. In this project, you will work at the frontier of peptide science, focusing on the formulation and characterisation of functional peptide systems that have relevance as, for instance, emerging therapeutic modalities or bio-based surfactants. Using advanced peptide synthesis and automated analytical techniques, you will explore how molecular design, formulation strategies and environmental parameters shape the structure–function relationships of these peptide-based bio-actives and materials. Automation and standardised data analysis workflows will support robust interpretation and comparison across complex experimental datasets. In close collaboration with experts in data science and machine learning, you will produce results that should lead to the development of data-driven frameworks that guide our understanding of next-generation peptide systems. PhD Position in Single-Cell Gene Expression Dynamics

We seek two passionate, innovative PhD candidates to unravel how cells control gene expression noise – key to understanding development and disease progression. Be part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team using single-molecule microscopy, various omics approaches, computational modelling and cell-free biochemistry to push the boundaries of quantitative biology. Every cell in our body faces a fundamental challenge: how to make precise decisions in a noisy, ever-changing environment. In cancer, pathogens and developing embryos, cells harness or suppress random fluctuations in protein levels to drive diversification, survival or fate transitions (see Trends in Genetics 2026, 42, 3, 240-254 for our recent review). Your task as a PhD candidate is to decode the molecular programmes that amplify or dampen gene expression noise. You will delve into the quantitative biology of gene expression noise, developing and applying novel computational approaches to measure and model how cells regulate random fluctuations in protein levels and how this impacts cellular behaviour. In collaboration with Prof. Boudewijn Burgering at UMCU, this project goes beyond traditional genetic explanations, seeking to uncover how non-genetic variability shapes cell fate decisions. Your work will focus on pioneering techniques to quantify noise across multiple data types, integrating different sequencing modalities, proteomics, advanced imaging and mathematical modelling. Ultimately, you will identify the molecular mechanisms that cells use to either enhance or suppress noise, revealing new principles of cellular decision-making. In your first months, you will engage with the field, refining your project alongside a collaborative, interdisciplinary team. Throughout the project you will become proficient in cutting-edge computational and experimental methods, contributing to a scientific community that values innovation, discovery and working together. Postdoctoral Researcher in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Attention

Welcome to Maastricht University! The Brain Stimulation and Cognition Lab at Maastricht University specializes in non invasive brain stimulation (TMS, TES, TUS) combined with neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG) to study brain network dynamics underlying cognition. Our research spans from basic cognitive neuroscience, to methodological innovation in brain stimulation technology, to translational applications in psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation. We pioneered simultaneous TMS–fMRI–EEG during cognitive behaviour and have demonstrated and leveraged the brain state dependency of neuromodulation.  You will work closely with Dr. Felix Duecker and Prof. Dr. Alexander Sack in a collaborative environment that values open science, methodological rigour, and strong mentorship. What you do This position is part of an NWO Replication Studies grant and focuses on the role of parietal cortex in spatial attention control. The project consists of two sequential replication studies investigating the effects of TMS on attentional orienting: •    Study 1 closely follows the original experimental design to reproduce the reported behavioural effects. •    Study 2 applies contemporary TMS methodology and improved experimental control to assess the robustness of the effect. All work is conducted within a pre registered, transparently documented, and openly shared research framework, with strong emphasis on methodological rigour and reproducibility. In addition to the core replication studies, the position includes dedicated time and support to develop complementary research ideas within the broader themes of TMS, spatial attention, and methodological innovation. Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Ecosystem Size Spectra Analysis

Then join the ERC Advanced Grant project ’The Power of Size’ to find out, make a difference and boost your academic career! The overall aim of ’The Power of Size’ is to establish relationships describing the emission, fate and effects of pollutants as a function of size. We intend to derive overarching scaling principles that apply across multiple disciplines, including hydrology, socioeconomics, toxicology and ecology. To achieve this goal, you will collect data from databases, reviews, articles and reports. You will then derive and compare statistical and mechanistic relationships. As the lead author, you will publish your results in scientific journals and present your main findings at international conferences. This vacancy involves Task 3.1 of ‘The Power of Size’ project, which is aimed at deriving theoretical and empirical scaling relationships linking species richness, trophic level productivity and community biomass to size spectra under stress. Merging existing and new relationships on specific indicators for these quantities, you will obtain a set of equations that describe ecosystem structure and functioning as a function of size and other relevant properties. You will test the theoretical framework developed on empirical data currently collected independently in the project. Examples of the approach can be found in Ecological Modelling 205: 196-208 and Ecological Indicators 79: 114-121. You will be part of the WP3 team consisting of Prof. Jan Hendriks, Dr Wilco Verberk, Dr Aafke Schipper, and one PhD candidate, and also collaborate with the PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers of WP1 and WP2. Your work will be theory- and data-driven, contributing to both fundamental research and regulatory applications. Given the empirical background of our research group, you will add essential skills to the team. On the one hand, you will help improve the understanding of the dominant role size plays in system functioning. On the other hand, the relationships you develop will support urgent risk assessment for over 1,000 substances, across more than 1,000 species (including humans) and 1,000 sites worldwide. To further improve your research and assessment skills as a postdoctoral researcher, you may attend courses offered by the Graduate School of the Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Science. You will supervise students and assist in teaching courses at the BSc/MSc level, which may take up to 10% of your working time (usually less). Does this sound like you? PhD Position in Regulatory Innovation

Do you want to investigate how animal-free methods (New Approach Methodologies, NAMs) can become the standard in drug development? As a PhD student in Regulatory Science, you will evaluate regulatory systems, processes and the broader scientific, social and institutional factors that influence the transition to animal-free innovations. Your job Although animal testing currently remains a key step in the development of medicines, it often provides limited insights into how drugs will work in humans, while also being time-consuming and costly. A successful transition to the use of NAMs requires not only technical changes, but also cultural, policy and organisational changes. This necessitates the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders, such as researchers, risk assessors, companies and policymakers. You will conduct PhD research into the integration of NAMs into the regulatory ecosystem, with the aim of improving the translational potential of medicines and reducing the use of laboratory animals. In doing so, you will draw on the unique knowledge base within Ombion external link (Centre for Animal-Free Biomedical Translation), an ambitious national programme aimed at accelerating the transition to animal-free biomedical innovations. Transition projects within Ombion focus on animal-free innovations for new therapies for asthma/COPD, osteoarthritis/arthritis, ALS and cystic fibrosis.
