Subject description Biology is the broad subject of all living things. It encompasses everything from processes at the molecular and cellular levels to global processes at the ecosystem level. The subject is divided into a range of sub-disciplines and specializations. The PhD program at the Department of Biology includes many of these specializations, from molecular biology to applied ecology, from viruses and individual cells to evolutionary biology and global biodiversity. Taking on research studies at the Department of Biology generally means focusing on a delimited part of the research area of biology and may include field studies, experiments, theoretical studies, or a combination of these. Work duties The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties, up to 20%. The chemistry of fear -indirect effects of predation in aquatic ecosystems The overall goal of the PhD project is to gain new insights to the mechanisms and consequences of sensing and signaling in predator-prey interactions in aquatic foodwebs. Prey organisms sense predators by chemical cues and respond by launching defensive traits such as vertical migration, bioluminescence, or toxin production, to avoid predation. The responses contribute to large scale phenomena such as harmful algal bloom formation and carbon sequestration. In the research group “Signals in the Sea” (https://www.pelagial.se/) we isolate the chemical alarm-cues, and explore their mechanism of action and effect from cellular to ecosystem level. You will use a combination of classical biological methods and state of the art techniques from chemistry and physics (LC-MS and GC-MS, AI driven microscopy, image-, and motion-analysis, in situ imaging rigs) to explore signaling systems and their consequences in aquatic ecology. The project typically involves a combination of field-, lab-, and computer based work. The successful candidate will be a devoted and curious explorer with a background in biology, physics, chemistry, or related fields and keen to interact with the vibrant multidisciplinary environment of the biology department at Lund University. Experience in plankton ecology, field work, programming, optics, academic writing, and/or image analysis are all meriting for the position. More about being a doctoral student at Doctoral studies | Faculty of Science Subject and project description Most bird species fly with muscle-powered active flight, which gives them great mobility that, for example, enables efficient habitat utilization and long-distance migration. The cost of flight (power consumption) can be theoretically described using a mechanical model, which results in a U-shaped relationship between power and speed. Until recently, it has been difficult to measure mechanical power in flying animals and thereby test the validity of the mechanical model. Evaluating the flight mechanics model is of great interest because it is used in other models related to flight and migration strategies in birds. By using high-speed cameras for kinematic studies of body and wing movements, it is possible to determine the cost of flight, as well as it is possible to measure, with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), the kinetic energy that a bird or bat adds to the air by flapping. In this doctoral project, different methods for determining flight power will be used, partly how it varies with flight speed and partly how it varies between species of different sizes and shapes. The overall goal is to evaluate the validity of flight mechanics models and flight efficiency with a special focus on birds and/or bats. The studies will be mainly conducted at Lund University’s wind tunnel facility for animal studies, which is equipped with modern equipment well suited to the planned research. We will also test predictions based on results from the wind tunnel studies regarding bird migration strategies by tracking birds using GPS and multisensory loggers. Work duties You will primarily devote yourself to your doctoral education, which mainly consists of writing a doctoral thesis. During the training you will learn different methods to study and measure vertebrate flight costs in detail, advanced analysis methods and to write scientific papers. You are expected to actively participate in the research projects in the wind tunnel facility and to plan and carry out field work in connection with studies of bird migration strategies. As a researcher, you will also present your research by participating in seminars and international conferences. The doctoral training also includes a number of mandatory courses and voluntary special courses that contribute to your development in solving and presenting scientific questions. The aerosol research group studies atmospheric aerosol particles and their impact on climate and air quality using in-situ and satellite measurements, process modelling and global modelling. The group is part of the strategic research area MERGE (https://www.merge.lu.se) with a focus on climate modelling. The assistant will be linked to the modelling work within the division and work with model data on how forests release organic gases into the air, so-called terpenes, and how these emissions affect the concentrations at different measuring stations, with which the models’ results are validated. With the help of this, it can be determined whether different emission databases of terpenes are uncertain and need to be improved, in order to better simulate atmospheric concentrations and the airborne aerosol particles these substances form and with which the climate is strongly affected. The position is funded by the Horizon Europe project CLIMB-FOREST, which aims to propose alternative forest management practices for a future resilient and climate-cooling forestry in Europe. An analysis is made of how the uncertain emissions propagate in uncertainties around modeled terpene concentrations with the atmospheric model ADCHEM through a comparison with measured concentrations. The terpenes contribute to aerosol particle formation, and thus inaccuracies in the emission database of terpenes also propagate to uncertainties in modeled aerosol concentrations, which are also compared with measured data. You will work with measurement data at the Swedish forest stations Hyltemossa and Norunda and the Finnish Hyytiälä to compare modelled with measured emissions and concentrations. An analysis is then included in a suitable analysis and visualisation tool to illustrate the conditions at the stations and over modelled concentrations. You will not run or develop models or perform new measurements. Duties also include writing scientific publications related to the research. You are expected to participate in project meetings and present results at scientific conferences. Description of the workplace The Cell Reprogramming in Hematopoiesis and Immunity research group at the Department of Laboratory Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine studies how hematopoietic cell fate is specified, maintained, and eventually modified or reversed. Inspired from the fields of stem cell biology, immunology, and cancer we use an interdisciplinary approach to mechanistically understand hematopoietic and immune cell identities and translate our findings into novel gene and cell therapies. Immunotherapy has transformed cancer treatment by enabling durable responses in some patients. However, many patients do not benefit, and several cancer types, including cold solid tumors, remain resistant to current immunotherapies. A major goal in the field is therefore to develop new strategies that increase tumor immunogenicity and improve anti-tumor immune responses. Cell fate reprogramming of cancer cells into immunogenic dendritic cells is a novel and promising approach that is being developed by the Pereira Lab at Lund University [1]. The Cell Reprogramming in Hematopoiesis and Immunity research group is a diverse group of molecular biologists, MDs, PharmDs, tumor immunologists, stem cell biologists and computational scientists – at all career stages.
