To achieve this goal, we conduct various research projects that try to link odor perception to brain processing using several different methods, including electrophysiological (EEG), functional and structural brain imaging, as well as behavior and psychophysical measurements. Your mission We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to lead a work package in our ERC Synergy grant (D2Smell) with the overall aim to digitalize smell. The aim of this sub-project is to develop and validate a new method to record electrophysiological responses to odor stimuli directly from the human olfactory receptors. Your main tasks will be, with the help of research assistants, to develop the recording setup, design and conduct experiments, analyze collected data, and publish the results in scientific articles. This will be done in direct collaboration with materials scientists in another ERC project with the goal of developing new electrodes. You will also work in close collaboration with other nodes within the ERC project. Beyond working on the ERC project, you will also be able to pursue your own research questions within the framework of our general research program. Position of Research assistant in Chromatin biology

In the research group led by Laura Baranello, we are particularly interested in the molecular mechanisms defining the crosstalk between transcription, DNA topology and chromatin folding, with the aim to design improved strategies for anti-cancer treatment. We are a young and dynamic research team with a well-established collaborative network. Our lab is located at Biomedicum, a top modern research building with a large repertoire of researchers and access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities. Your mission The Baranello Lab – Drawing from our expertise in the fields of topoisomerase and cancer biology, we aim to answer fundamental questions about how transcription, replication and DNA topology are functionally coordinated in human cells. We use state-of-the-art approaches to assess transcriptomic, epigenomic and replisomic profiles, as well as molecular biology, advanced microscopy and drug screens to understand how topoisomerase regulation affects fundamental nuclear processes (key lab references: Baranello et al. Cell 2016; Wiegard et al. Molecular Cell 2021; Das et al. Molecular Cell 2022; Cameron et al. Science Advances 2023). The overall aim is to reveal novel cancer therapy targets and improved strategies for personalized treatment. Recently we have identified a protein complex called “topoisome” in which the oncoprotein MYC recruits and increases the catalytic activities of both Topoisomerase 1 and 2 to promote high rates of transcription (Das et al. Molecular Cell 2022). The successful candidate will play a leading role in a research project, focused to address the functional role of the topoisome during transcription. Specifically we want to study the coordination of the topoisome and the transcriptional machinery. The outcome of this work is predicted to inspire a new strategy to target MYC in cancer, which will be tested in MYC-driven cancer models. This multidisciplinary project involves microscopy, biochemistry  and molecular biology. The research assistant will plan and execute experiments, analyze data, interpret, and present the results, initially under supervision but with greater independence going forward. Position of Research Assistant in Development of new therapies for prostate cancer

In this project, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) will be used as delivery systems to engineer immune cells. Lipid nanoparticles are being explored as delivery tools for in vivo engineering due to their abilities to carry nucleic acids and enable targeted delivery. Protein conjugates can be used for the specific targeting and delivery of functional groups such as oligonucleotides. Current cell-based therapies are limited by the need to manipulate with ex vivo, production times and costs. New therapies offering a targeted approach at different levels (protein and RNA) could offer significant advantages in prostate cancer therapies. PhD position in immunology with a focus on inflammatory skin diseases

PhD position in intestinal mucosal immunology

The research group Elisabeth Nyström´s group at the Division of Immunology and Respiratory Medicine is an interdisciplinary research team investigating how epithelial tissues build and regulate protective barriers. We focus on how intestinal mucus and mucus-producing goblet cells create a dynamic interface between the host and its environment, shaping microbial interactions, molecular exchange, and immune activation. By integrating molecular biology, biochemistry, and physiology, we aim to uncover how mucus is assembled and functions in health and disease. The group is embedded in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, with close interactions across immunology, bioinformatics, structural biology, biochemistry, and clinical research, both locally, nationally and internationally. The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student The project will investigate how diverse mucus-producing cell populations shape mucus properties, and how changes in their composition influence mucus function through the regulation of post-translational modifications of mucus proteins. Intestinal infection models will be used as systems in which goblet cell composition and mucus function are altered. The doctoral student will use single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) approaches to characterize goblet cell populations, combined with ex vivo mucus analysis platforms to link cellular composition to function. In addition, the student will apply mass spectrometry-based approaches to study post-translational modifications and validate findings using biochemical analyses. The project includes experimental work in animal models, and the doctoral student will be responsible for performing infection experiments, including handling and propagation of relevant bacterial or parasitic organisms, as well as monitoring disease progression. Some of these activities may require flexibility in working hours, including work outside standard hours or during weekends. The doctoral student is expected to drive their project forward with increasing independence, while actively engaging with the research group. Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Human Organoids and Viral Infection Biology

The ideal candidate for the position has a PhD in virology, cell biology, developmental biology, neuroscience or a closely related biomedical field, with a solid practical background in 3D cell culture systems such as organoids or spheroids. Direct experience in generating, maintaining and differentiating at least one of the relevant organoid types – brain, intestine or placenta – is required, preferably combined with familiarity with iPSC culture and differentiation protocols. Position of Assistant Professor in Neuroimmunology and Glial Biology

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?  We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative scientist with expertise in neuroimmunology and glial biology research, with a particular focus on microglial regulation of myelin and neurons in aging and neurological disorders. The position is embedded in a strong translational environment within the Division of Neuro, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, and will address key challenges in diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), neuroinflammatory conditions, and age-related neurological decline. The research is expected to integrate mechanistic insights with clinical relevance and translational value, contributing to an improved understanding and treatment of central nervous system CNS disorders. Your mission  In collaboration with research teams within the department and beyond, and by combining advanced experimental approaches, novel transgenic tools, and access to patient-derived materials, you will: Establish an independent, internationally competitive research program, and secure external funding Carry out new and ongoing research to: (i) Elucidate the fundamental mechanisms governing myelin vulnerability and repair across aging and neurological diseases, with a particular focus on microglia-myelin interactions and region-specific CNS resilience.
