Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is one of the German universities awarded the status of University of Excellence. Located at the Institute of Biology, our research group investigates the molecular mechanisms governing bacterial cell biology and the spatial organization of multicellular biofilms. This project, funded under the DFG Priority Programme SPP 2389 “Emergent Functions of Bacterial Multicellularity”, investigates how conjugation via F-pili influences the organization and function of bacterial biofilms. Using genetics, microfluidics, high-resolution imaging, and quantitative image analysis, we aim to understand how conjugation contributes to multicellular behavior in bacterial communities. The Wernet Laboratory investigates the development, wiring, and function of synaptic connections in the brain using the Drosophila model system. We offer opportunities for scientific work, exchange, and professional development within the framework of a PhD program in an international team. About us The School VI of Medicine and Health Sciences comprises the fields of human medicine, medical physics and acoustics, neurosciences, psychology and health services research. Together with the four regional hospitals, School VI forms the University Medicine Oldenburg. Furthermore, the university cooperates closely with the University Medicine of the University of Groningen. At the Division of Neuromodulation in Neurology, we develop innovative neurotechnologies for treating motor and cognitive impairments, and study how these technologies can be applied in neurological model disorders. Our research focuses on methods and electrical systems for recording and modulating neural processes. In particular, we specialize in noninvasive neurostimulation techniques combined with simultaneous neuroimaging (e.g. fMRI, EEG). Our core technology is transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS) (Wessel & Beanato et al., 2023 Nature Neuroscience; Hummel & Wessel et al., 2024 Nature Reviews Neurology). The work is embedded in close collaborations in the field of neuromodulation research, both on-site and with external partners, particularly the non-invasive DBS Laboratory at the University Hospital Würzburg and the Hummel Laboratory at EPFL (Geneva and Sion, Switzerland). The Department of Plant Physiology of the Faculty of Biology/Chemistry at the University of Osnabrück is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to commence work at the earliest possible date. This is a temporary position limited for three years, working on a project funded by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony (MWK). The Neurophysiology Research Group investigates the neural basis of hearing and communication in mice and other small mammals (e.g., naked mole-rats). Using electrophysiological, behavioral, anatomical, and molecular biological methods, we explore the function of brain structures involved in processing complex acoustic signals. Another focus is the acoustic communication of these animals in various behavioral contexts. Weare particularly interested in changes in brain function and behavior in mice with Fragile X syndrome, a form of autism spectrum disorder. These animals, similar to affected humans, exhibit heightened acoustic sensitivity and impairments in acoustic communication.Furthermore, the research group is involved in organizing and conducting teaching in the fields of animal physiology (Bachelor’s) and neurobiology (Master’s). Research Assistant (PhD) position in Ecophysiology of Marine Animals

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for the interdisciplinary research project MitoCARB at the interface of ecological physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The project focuses on the role of reactive carbonyl species (RCS), particularly methylglyoxal (MG), in the metabolic regulation and stress responses of marine bivalves. This PhD project offers the opportunity to work on an innovative and highly relevant topic in evolutionary and comparative physiology as well as global change biology. Using the model organisms Mytilus edulis and Crassostrea gigas, the project aims to understand how RCS contribute to the exceptional metabolic flexibility and stress tolerance of these species. A particular focus is placed on the effects of temperature and hypoxia on aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, as well as on the dual role of RCS as both damaging by-products and signaling molecules in stress adaptation.
