The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna. The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. We conduct research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. Our research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The research group The research group “Nordic UK Brain Network” (NBN) at the Centre for Alzheimer’s Research offers a dynamic and international research environment where the healthy brain aging is the focus. NBN is part of the Division of Clinical Geriatrics at the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) at KI. The goal of the NBN research is to identify and prevent the development of cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Our activities include research, implementation, and information dissemination. We participate in international research networks with both prevention and treatment studies, such as multimodal lifestyle interventions for people at risk for developing cognitive problems and clinical drug-trials for dementia. The announced position will be in collaboration with the division of Neurogeriatrics at the same department (NVS) which has a focus on disease mechanisms and basic research in neurodegeneration. This collaboration offers a translational research environment. The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student In this PhD proposal, the student will contribute to advancing the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying white matter changes in the early pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). By exploring the effects of lifestyle interventions on myelination as a potential protective factor, this PhD program aims to identify new strategies for enhancing resilience against AD. The candidate will examine the role of oligodendrocytes and myelination in neurodegenerative disorders through a multifaceted approach. This includes research on fluid biomarkers, including work in extracellular vesicles in Alzheimer’s disease, as well as analyses of brain tissue samples from both mice and humans. The biomarker studies will be conducted within observational cohorts and randomized clinical trials (RCTs) using both MRI-data, fluid biomarker data and clinical data. In addition to fulfilling doctoral courses at Karolinska Institute (KI) and accruing the necessary credits, the doctoral student will engage in literature reviews and data analyses, focusing on both experimental data and databases from the observational cohorts and RCTs. Furthermore, the student will interpret results and prepare publications for scientific journals. Postdoctoral Researcher position in personalization of standard-of-care chemotherapeutics

Division The Department of Oncology-Pathology conducts basic, translational, and clinical research together with educational activities related to cancer. We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the Rudd group and work under the supervision of Research Specialist Si Min Zhang, who leads a newly established research program. The research environment is located at SciLifeLab Campus Solna, a state-of-the-art national infrastructure for life science that fosters cutting-edge, multidisciplinary collaboration at both national and international levels.  Duties Differentiation therapy induces cancer cells into terminally differentiated, non-proliferating state, and has revolutionized the treatment of the once deadly acute promyeloid leukemia (APML). Nevertheless, identifying and mechanistic deciphering of factors controlling differentiation therapy response remains critical for 1) treating resistant/refectory APML, 2) individualized treatment regimen design to mitigate excessive side effects, and 3) sensitizing non-APML cancer to differentiation therapy. Here we are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team to identify and develop approaches to improve differentiation therapy, in the disease context of acute myeloid leukemia and beyond. Entry requirements Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their merit in Sweden. Location: Solna Description of the subject area  Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, with nearly two million new cases diagnosed annually, and remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Despite major advances in surgery, systemic therapy, and surveillance, up to 30–40% of patients treated with curative intent ultimately develop recurrent disease. Once recurrence occurs, prognosis is poor and curative treatment is rarely possible. Preventing relapse therefore remains one of the most urgent unmet needs in colorectal cancer care. There is consequently a major need for biologically informed precision medicine approaches that can identify patients at high risk of recurrence, predict benefit from adjuvant therapy, and guide individualized treatment strategies. The research is embedded within extensive national and international collaborations in colorectal cancer and precision oncology. The programme builds on the ALASCCA Study and the ALASCCA Research Platform, which connect 33 Nordic hospitals through harmonized protocols for surgery, oncology, pathology, biobanking, and longitudinal data capture. Through the national data infrastructure CRCBaSe the group collaborates closely with epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and health economists utilizing Sweden’s nationwide colorectal cancer registry linkages. The environment also includes expertise in digital pathology and AI-driven modelling, bringing together gastrointestinal pathologists, computational scientists, and biostatisticians within a shared slide-scanning and data infrastructure.  The research network originates from clinical practice in colorectal surgery and pursues a highly translational and multidisciplinary research strategy spanning surgery, radiotherapy, systemic oncology, molecular pathology, epidemiology, and experimental cancer research. This programme should leverage and extend existing strengths at FyFa, foster interdisciplinary collaboration within Biomedicum and KI, align with clinically relevant needs, and secure funding sufficient to establish a self-sustaining research group. While teaching is not a requirement for employment, at FyFa you will have the opportunity to teach in subject areas relevant to your research topic, develop graduate level courses, and recruit top level PhD students. Researchers holding an assistant professorship will be expected to take an active part in teaching commitments at the department. Eligibility requirements  To be eligible for an appointment as Assistant Professor, you must demonstrate good scientific skills according to KI’s eligibility criteria as follows: A PhD (or equivalent degree) in a relevant subject area At least two peer-reviewed original scientific publications as first or last author, in addition to the doctoral thesis Priority is given to those who were awarded a PhD (or attained equivalent competence) no more than seven years prior to the expiry of the deadline for the application. Those who have been awarded a doctoral degree or attained equivalent research competence earlier will also be considered if there are special circumstances for absence from research (deductible time), such as: parental leave, long-term illness, positions of trust in trade union organizations or mandatory service in total defence. The circumstances, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified by relevant documentation.
