Professorship for “Translational Gastrointestinal Oncology”

The Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University offers the position of a Full Professorship (W3) in “Translational Gastrointestinal Oncology” (f/m/d) to be filled from April 1, 2027. The holder of the position will represent the entire spectrum of Translational Gastrointestinal Oncology in both research and teaching. In research, the W3 Professorship in Translational Gastrointestinal Oncology is expected to actively contribute to the faculty’s research focus “Mannheim Comprehensive Tumor Campus/MCTC” and the established research areas of the Department of Medicine II, with its focus on gastroenterology, hepatology, infectious diseases, and nutritional medicine, and to further expand collaboration with partners at the EMBL and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. Department of Clinical Sciences The Department of Clinical Sciences conducts undergraduate education, research and postgraduate education in the scientific areas of veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing. We contribute to the continuous development of knowledge about animal health and diseases at both individual and population levels. Subject description The subject is large animal surgery with a focus on horses but also includes ruminants and pigs. Research at UPSC covers a wide range of disciplines in plant biology, including ecology, computational biology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology.  Description and tasks The bioinformatic support group of UPSC (UPSCb) supports researchers at UPSC with bioinformatic analysis, and interpreting large datasets from metabolomic, proteomic, or genomic experiments. The goal is to get maximum information from the datasets in collaboration with the individual researchers. The projects can be small (e.g. mRNA sequencing) and take a few hours to complete or very extensive, spanning over several years. The group currently consists of five staff scientists, all of whom have a PhD in Bioinformatics or a related discipline. Your role as a Senior Staff Scientist will be to lead and develop the UPSCb support group. You will be responsible for the professional development of the group and the individuals in your team, both as bioinformaticians and as coworkers. You will have strategic responsibility for the platform, so it is important to closely follow the field’s development. The department is also hosting other similar groups that support researchers from other departments, as well as a large group of bioinformatics researchers and PhD students. Together with the research groups, about 30 biotechnicians work at the center. Your role will also be to coordinate local bioinformatics seminars and workshops in cooperation with Nathaniel Street, Professor in Plant Bioinformatics. Qualification requirements For employment as a Senior Staff Scientist, a doctoral degree is required in bioinformatics or a similar research field of relevance for the position. Solid knowledge and extensive experience within bioinformatics are also required, as well as excellent knowledge of underlying theories and principles, and specific competence linked to the development and application of advanced methods within bioinformatics. For employment as a Senior Staff Scientist it is also required: Experience of advanced leadership/coordination work with research infrastructure, such as work management, budget work, coordination, collaboration, reporting and grant applications/funding work. Experience of advanced work duties involving the development and application of advanced methods within areas of relevance to the position. You must be used to supporting researchers in their need for computer analysis and to ensure the scientific reproducibility of their projects, including data management. You must also have good collaboration skills, as the job is based on interaction between the support group and biologists. It’s important that you can explain bioinformatics to non-specialists so that they understand. As our research generates more and more data, it’s a merit to have experience across the whole data lifecycle. Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences The Department of Crop Production Ecology SLU is a world-leading university in the fields of agriculture and forestry and is one of the leading centres in the Nordic region for ecological research. We offer a dynamic and distinguished research environment combined with modern infrastructure. This includes advanced crop production facilities, four field research stations, more than 60 long-term agricultural experiments, including a new large-scale landscape experiment. SLU’s broad expertise in research related to the use and management of land, forests, and water, together with cross-faculty initiatives, creates opportunities for interdisciplinary research. The Department of Crop Production Ecology is primarily based in Uppsala. The Department develops knowledge on cropping systems to meet demands for both quantity and quality of food, animal feed, and bio-based raw materials in a sustainable way in a changing world. The research focuses on challenges arising from increasing demand, climate change, environmental impacts, and biodiversity loss linked to agricultural and food systems. The department’s research and education address crop production ecology from the molecular level, via the plant, the field, and the farm, up to the landscape level. Activities are organised in four subject areas: cropping systems, crop production specialized in forage, plant ecology, and weed ecology. Research is often conducted in collaboration with other scientific disciplines and with external stakeholders to contribute to the development of more sustainable agricultural and food systems. This position is placed in a research group in Umeå that primarily conducts research on sustainable and competitive agricultural systems based on forage crops such as ley, pasture, and whole-crop cereals to secure access to environmentally friendly and sustainable food from ruminants. This includes agronomic research, agricultural systems assessment, and applied remote sensing. The group provides teaching at both undergraduate and advanced levels, mainly within the agronomy- soil & plant programme, and is also active in courses for professionals. Together with a research group from the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare, the research group forms an inspiring and interdisciplinary research environment at the joint campus of SLU and Umeå University. The two departments work with a holistic perspective on sustainable agriculture that includes farm animals and crops, as well as their management.
