Fibrosis and tissue regeneration represent two opposing aspects of the wound-healing process, where  fibrosis limits the restoration of functional tissue after injury. This limitation is particularly critical in the adult mammalian central nervous system, where lesions lead to scar formation at the expense of tissue regeneration. Understanding how fibrosis is linked to regeneration failure may enable the development of new therapeutic strategies. The research should focus  on non-regenerating organs, including but not limited to the mammalian central nervous system. You will lead a research team and have delegated responsibilities, including that for work environment. The work also involves teaching and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Bioinformatician position

The research group led by Professor Thomas Perlmann is focused on how specific cell types of the central nervous system are generated and how they are maintained. Our lab is mostly interested in midbrain dopaminergic neurons. We use cutting-edge techniques to study the signaling and transcriptional regulation that govern the specification, differentiation and maintenance of these cells. Our studies have resulted in the identification of several transcription factors with key roles in these processes. The projects are focused on understanding functions in both early specification events during embryonic development and in the maintenance of dopaminergic neurons in the adult brain. Moreover, we are also interested in regenerative medicine in relation to Parkinson’s disease and other brain disorders. Your mission In this role, the candidate will perform bioinformatics and statistical analyses across multiple research projects, including BCL-to-FASTQ conversion, demultiplexing, alignment, quality control, multi-omics integration, and interpretation of high-throughput sequencing data. The candidate will provide guidance on statistical methods, computational approaches, and study design to ensure robust and reproducible analyses. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining web-based tools for data exploration and sharing (e.g., Shiny, Plotly, CellxGene), supporting database infrastructure (e.g., MySQL), and building reproducible analysis workflows and software solutions. Research Specialist position in Neuroscience

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research? The Department of Neuroscience consist of more than 35 research groups studying the function of the nervous system in health and disease. The laboratory of Dr. Gilberto Fisone is interested in the characterization of mouse models of neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. The lab needs to strengthen its research on Parkinson’s affective disorders, which affect a large proportion of patients and are refractory to standard medications. This will provide an ideal complement to clinical research on neurodegenerative disorders currently carried out at Karolinska Institutet. Dr. Fisone’s lab is in the Biomedicum building, which hosts a multidisciplinary environment and top-level core facilities. Description of the subject area Parkinson’s disease (PD), the second most frequent neurodegenerative disorder, is characterized by the appearance of motor disabilities such as tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia.  In addition to the cardinal motor symptoms, PD is accompanied by a wide range of co-morbidities, which include sleep disorders. These conditions are often refractory to standard dopamine replacement therapies against PD. The work in the laboratory of Dr. Gilberto Fisone is based on the characterization of animal models reproducing these various disorders, combined with multiscale analyses to identify molecular, cellular and circuit abnormalities as potential targets for future treatments. Your mission The successful candidate is expected to be responsible for a research line aiming at the characterization of molecular and circuit abnormalities involved in motor impairment and sleep disturbances associated with Parkinson’s disease. Work will be based on the use of a rodent model of PD, previously shown to reproduce several non-motor symptoms commonly observed in parkinsonian patients. The final goal will be to provide information for the development of therapeutic approaches to combine with those commonly used to treat the cardinal motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Research Assistant position in Metabolic Research and lncRNA in Adipocytes

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research? The adipocyte expresses over 7000 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), many uniquely expressed in fat cells. However, how these polymeric molecules function in concert with the metabolic machinery of the cell is not well understood. In our laboratory, we investigate how lncRNAs adapt the adipocyte for specialised function, specifically in the context of lipid droplet metabolism. Our investigation focuses on lncRNAs that may underline compromised metabolic flexibility and contribute to cardiometabolic disease pathogenesis. We integrate findings from well-characterized human white adipose tissue (WAT) biopsies and large population genetics to identify lncRNAs implicated in lipid metabolism and cardiometabolic disease. The disease-associated lncRNAs are investigated in human adipocyte cell models and using CRISPRi/a gene perturbation coupled to lipidomic/metabolomics, we aim to understand the effect of the lncRNA expression on adipocyte metabolism. In addition, we use gene variant editing in human adipocytes to understand how single nucleotide polymorphisms located in lncRNA gene loci lead to alterations in lipid droplet metabolism. Alastair Kerr Laboratory The research project and the duties of the research assistant This project will explore how lncRNAs regulate fat cell lipid storage through responding to insulin and in turn type-2 diabetes pathogenesis. The research assistant will use multi-omic datasets generated in human adipocytes to uncover novel lncRNAs that organise the insulin response. The research assistant will progress these lncRNAs into molecular studies in human adipocytes, where they will use advanced molecular gene perturbation systems and in-house developed molecular methodology to uncover how these lncRNAs function at a molecular resolution. The research assistant will be trained in how to analyse transcriptomic/proteomic datasets and develop an investigational pipeline to understand how lncRNAs function. Research assistant position in data-driven gene control for regenerative medicine

Do you want to contribute to improving people’s health? In this new research group, we focus on using synthetic biology to solve important challenges in regenerative medicine. To this end, we develop molecular tools and computer algorithms to predict and control cell behaviors useful for tissue repair. Specifically, our goal is to combine genome editing tools (e.g. CRISPR) with predictive algorithms to enable data-driven, precision-guided engineering of cell identity and function, with a particular focus on stem cells. We operate at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, which consists of seven departments with both research and teaching activities. The department conducts advanced research that includes both basic and applied research. All departments have close collaboration with clinics at Karolinska University Hospital. The Department of Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM) focuses on the use of cells, cell products and modified biomolecules as new therapeutic tools, as well as on identifying and studying suitable biomolecular and cellular targets for treatment and diagnostics. The department is also connected to the Karolinska ATMP Center. We are now looking for two research assistants with a strong background and practical experience in CRISPR technology, molecular cloning and cell culture. Culturing of stem cells and/or immune cells, single-cell RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analyses are required. Research Specialist position in regeneration biology

Description of the subject area Why some animal species but not others respond to injury with extensive regeneration is an outstanding question both from an evolutionary perspective and when considering possible interventions how to enhance regenerative capacity in mammals. We study newts which have the largest repertoire regeneration capacities among tetrapods and compare findings in these animals with injury response in mammalian models.  Our laboratory has developed a large number of methods and tools, such as genome assembly and implementation of genome editing technologies in newts, that have made these outstanding questions experimentally tangible. Your mission The successful applicant will focus on limb regeneration using state-of-the art cell and molecular biological approaches and will be involved in developing new methodologies. Research specialist position in Bacteriology and vaccines

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. Our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations. We search for a research specialist that together with Professor Birgitta Henriques Normark, her research group and her collaborators, will work on projects in bacteriology and pneumococcal- and streptococcal infections to develop vaccines. Description of the subject area The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies infectious diseases as one of the greatest global health threats. Respiratory tract infections are major causes of morbidity and death globally. Pneumococci are a major contributor to both morbidity and mortality and being the most common causes of milder respiratory tract infections such as otitis media and sinusitis, as well as of severe diseases such as pneumonia, septicemia and meningitis. However, pneumococci are also common colonizers of the upper respiratory tract of healthy children. Group A streptococci are major causes of milder respiratory tract infections such as tonsillitis, as well as skin infections, but also to more severe diseases such as septicemia, necrotizing fascitis, and toxic shock syndrome. There is also a risk for sequel including rheumatic heart disease. The research group focuses on pathogenesis and host-microbe interactions with a major interest in pneumococcal and streptococcal infections. Your mission This position includes development of bacterial pathogenesis and vaccines with a focus on pneumococcal and streptococcal infections. Identified vaccine candidates will be evaluated using genetic, proteomic, and molecular microbiology technologies as well as using in vitro and in vivo models. A production line for bacterial membrane vesicles will be set up. The major target is pneumococcal and streptococcal infections.
