About the position As a specialist in surgery at UDS, you will primarily work in the surgery department, postoperative care unit, and ICU. You will provide clinical services in a broad range of surgery cases; orthopaedics, soft tissue, and neurosurgery cases. You are part of our surgical team, which works with excellent veterinary care, teaching, and research. It is a varied and stimulating everyday life in a round-the-clock operation at Sweden’s only university animal hospital. You will support and develop the surgery team, provide guidance and support to veterinary nurses, ensure that the flow through the surgery department is efficient and safe for the patients, supervise and teach students as well as residents and junior veterinarians. You aim to get involved in strategic development and management of the clinic. Participation in the out-of-hours service is also expected. Collaboration with colleagues within your discipline and across the faculty is a part of the role. Opportunities to engage in ongoing clinical research are available, and you may contribute to lecturing, small group teaching, and assessing veterinary students. A crucial aspect of your work will involve advising and collaborating with veterinarians in other disciplines, such as intensive care and in-patient care. Regular consultations with veterinarians, including referral veterinarians, is an integral part of this role. You collaborate with our management team, subject representatives, and specialists with the goal of developing our employees in the discipline. Your profile We are seeking a board-certified International specialist (European or American College of Veterinary Surgery (ECVS or ACVS Diplomate) in small animal surgery; alternatively, you hold a recognised national specialist title in small animal surgery. You have veterinary credentials from a university in Sweden or another EU/EEA country or from Switzerland or other teaching institution with credentials that are accredited by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) or the American Veterinary Association (AVMA). It is an advantage if you also hold a PhD or have teaching experience. Proficiency in English is required, and you either speak a Scandinavian language or are committed to learning Swedish within a time-period of ca 2-3 years. You are communicative with a strong ability to create and maintain good relationships with customers and colleagues. About the position As a licensed veterinarian at UDS, you will work in a varied day-to-day environment within a 24/7 operation at Sweden’s only university animal hospital. The position is primarily focused on clinical veterinary care, but also includes extensive involvement in the undergraduate education of veterinary students, offering a stimulating and varied work environment. Pedagogical training will be provided, as well as support from senior colleagues. The role also includes evening, night, and weekend duties. After a period with limited opening hours, the clinic is since March 2026 operating around the clock again. The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology is now recruiting a Researcher for a permanent position based at the Section of Physiology, within the research group for Diabetes and Islet Biology. Duties The successful candidate will conduct independent research in the field of islet biology and diabetes, with a particular focus on the cellular and functional interactions within pancreatic islets.The position includes responsibility for developing and leading independent research projects, with the long-term objective of establishing and consolidating a research line and contributing to the development of a research group within the department. Key responsibilities include: Developing, optimizing, and maintaining experimental mouse models for diabetes research, including transgenic approaches. Phenotypic and functional characterization of animal models using advanced molecular, imaging, and physiological techniques. Maintaining accurate and structured documentation of animal colonies and experimental procedures in compliance with ethical and regulatory requirements. Designing and executing hypothesis-driven studies aimed at addressing key knowledge gaps in islet cell biology, particularly with respect to intercellular signalling and endocrine regulation. Analysis, interpretation, and documentation of experimental data. Preparation of scientific manuscripts and dissemination of research findings in peer-reviewed journals, with expected contribution as senior author. Supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students within the research environment. Preparation of ethical applications for animal experimentation and ensuring adherence to ethical standards. Contributing to the preparation and submission of external research funding applications. The role also includes active participation in the scientific environment of the department, including collaboration within national and international research networks. Qualifications Requirements: PhD in Medical Sciences or another field relevant to the position. At least five (5) years of postdoctoral research experience following PhD defense. Documented experience working with experimental mouse models in diabetes research, including both development and functional characterization of models. Completed accredited laboratory animal science training (animal course) in accordance with applicable regulations. Extensive experience in experimental methodologies relevant to diabetes research, including but not limited to hormone secretion assays, radioimmunoassays, and related physiological measurements. Demonstrated experience in experimental work involving islet-derived hormones, particularly somatostatin, including study design, data acquisition, and analysis. Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in working with human biological material, particularly pancreatic islets and plasma samples. Strong ability to independently design, plan, and execute hypothesis-driven research projects. Documented ability to obtain competitive research funding as principal applicant or co-applicant. Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Swedish, with the ability to teach and supervise students in both languages. Meritorious qualifications: Previous experience working with optogenetic mouse models, particularly in pancreatic islet research. Experience in advanced imaging techniques and analysis relevant to islet biology. Proven ability to lead and develop independent research directions or contribute to the establishment of new research lines. Demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain research collaborations, both nationally and internationally. Experience in interdisciplinary research environments combining physiology, molecular biology, and translational approaches. Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage complex experimental workflows and maintain structured documentation. A strong publication record in relevant fields such as islet biology, endocrinology, or diabetes research, including authorship in peer-reviewed journals. Position Summary: The successful candidate will join a research program in programmable immune engineering at UHN, based at the ATC-RI and affiliated with the University of Toronto. The lab focuses on designing engineered human immune cells that maintain stable and regulated function in complex clinical environments, with a particular emphasis on transplantation alongside applications in cancer and infection. The research program integrates CRISPR-based genome engineering, RNA-based modulation, and advanced human tissue and organoid models to define generalizable design principles for immune function under clinical stress conditions such as inflammation, immunosuppression, and chronic antigen exposure. A central goal is to establish programmable immune resilience as a design parameter for clinically deployable cell therapies. Experimental approaches include genetic engineering of human T cells, development of non-viral and mRNA-based delivery strategies, and functional validation in physiologically relevant human model systems, closely aligned with translational and biomanufacturing workflows at UHN. Example application areas include regulatory T cell engineering for stability under inflammatory and pharmacologic constraint. The Postdoctoral Researcher will play a key role in building and shaping this research platform and will have the opportunity to develop independent research directions within a highly interdisciplinary and translational environment.
