The School of Veterinary Medicine is a prestigious center for research, training, and animal care. It is one of only five sites in Germany offering education and training in veterinary medicine. The school is currently located at two sites across Berlin. The research activities of the school’s eighteen academic units, including three animal clinics, are part of a worldwide network of experts in the field of veterinary medicine and related areas of research.
The Institute for Animal Nutrition is based at the Center for Biomedical Sciences and provides an optimal environment for research in the field of nutritional physiology in small animals, domestic animals, and livestock.
Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will cover research and teaching in the field of animal nutrition.
Appointment requirements:
• Governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz – BerIHG). • University degree in veterinary medicine • Certification as a specialized veterinarian in the field of animal nutrition and dietetics and/or diplomate from the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition (ECVCN)
Additional requirements for the appointment include:
- Internationally recognized research achievements in the field of animal nutrition
- Several years of experience in teaching in the field of animal nutrition at the university level
- Experience in independently acquiring and leading externally funded research projects
- Ideally, experience in postgraduate training and education
- Ideally, experience on scientific/professional boards and committees on the national or international level
- Applicants whose first language is not German must demonstrate proficiency in German to at least the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Expectations:
Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 BerlHG, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
- Conduct lectures and courses on the subject of animal nutrition within the degree programs taught at the School of Veterinary Medicine.
- Actively acquire external funding on a national and international level.
- Engage in close interdisciplinary cooperation with institutions within the School of Veterinary Medicine, particularly the working groups within the Veterinary Center for Resistance Research (TZR), and other departments at Freie Universität Berlin.
- Cooperate with other institutions in the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region.
- Contribute to German and international research focus areas and research associations.
- Actively communicate their own research achievements to the public.
- Implement a leadership style that strives to maintain a work-life balance among their employees and acknowledges the links between management, motivation, and employees’ commitment to their performance at work, on top of further developing their own leadership skills.
- Participate in academic committee work.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to gender and diversity issues in the context of teaching, research, and administrative duties.
