The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. Our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.
We are seeking a dedicated Research Assistant to join our innovative team on a project studying Streptococcus pneumoniae virulence and genetics. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to vital research that aims to understand this pathogen and its function in infection.

Responsibilities for this position include conducting experiments, data analysis, literature searches, and collaborating with a dynamic research team on bacteria and toxins. Your profile
We are looking for someone with a strong interest in research in infectious diseases.
Requirements for the position:
- We are seeking a person who is a master’s level student in biomedicine or a related field and has laboratory experience in microbiology.
- A good understanding of microbiological theory as well as previous laboratory experience—particularly in growth and cultivation at BSL-2 level—is required.
- You have a strong background in infection biology and microbiology, as well as experience with laboratory techniques such as bacterial culture in a BSL-2 lab, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, UV/Vis spectroscopy, microscopy including immunofluorescence microscopy, primer design, PCR, molecular cloning and sequencing, insertional mutagenesis and knockout mutagenesis of bacteria, protein extraction and purification, and computational systems such as ChimeraX and AlphaFold.
- You are methodical, organized, and have a good ability to document your work.
- The ability to collaborate and to work both independently and in a team is essential.
- Good knowledge of English and Swedish, both spoken and written.
Meritorious:
- Previous research experience and experience working with bacterial toxins are considered an advantage.
- Previous work with Streptococcus pneumoniae and Escherichia coli is an advantage.
