Position of Research assistant in Molecular Bacteriology/Molecular Biology/epidemiology

Website Karolinska Institutet

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. Our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

The behavior and physiology of microorganisms significantly determines the fate of the infection. Thereby, pandemic clones of pathogenic microorganisms often display antimicrobial resistance and are challenging to eradicate. You are the right applicant for this position, if you are self-driven, highly engaged, have ambitious goals, want to do high-quality research resulting in documented achievements. A plus is if you like to work on the molecular basis of a challenging and important clinical problem with up to date experimental approaches to create novel knowledge at the forefront of research.

Your mission

Pandemic microbial clones, often, but not necessarily associated with multidrug resistance, can arise within a pathogenic bacterial species and can cause a wide range of infections worldwide. Thereby the molecular mechanisms of pandemic spread in multiple diverse environments are not fully resolved. Pseudomonas aeruginosa clone C is a pandemic clone that thrives without possessing a major antimicrobial resistance profile. By comparative molecular analysis of individual clone C strains information about fitness factors affecting biofilm formation, virulence and stress tolerance will be identified.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a research assistant, you must have/are in the process to complete Master studies. You must have demonstrated research expertise with excellent outcome.

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, you must have

  • Demonstrated experience in molecular (micro)biology techniques in microorganisms
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work on and organize independently a research project practically and theoretically
  • Theoretical and practical experience to work with Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Demonstrate ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
  • Fluency in written and spoken (scientific) English
  • Excellent communication skills

It is meritorious if you can demonstrate

  • Basic knowledge in bioinformatics and/or programming languages

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of the applicants will have the most optimal potential to contribute to a positive development at Karolinska Institutet.
