Ruhr University Bochum is consolidating its decentralized animal facilities into the new Core Facility for Animal Research (CoFAR). The primary work location for these positions is the newly constructed Center for Theoretical and Integrative Neuro- and Cognitive Sciences (THINK) on Mark 51°7, whose animal facilities are part of CoFAR. The animal housing in the new THINK research building is a state-of-the-art barrier enclosure designed to the highest standards for laboratory rodents and birds. If needed, these positions may also be assigned to the animal facilities on the main campus of Ruhr University Bochum, which will be consolidated in the new CoFAR building in the medium term.
Your tasks:
- Independent and autonomous animal care in the breeding and keeping of laboratory animals (mice and rats, including genetically modified lines) and birds, as well as animal care in the experimental areas.
- Implementing hygiene management and taking on tasks in the area of maintenance/repair and organization in animal husbandry
- Documentation in accordance with legal record-keeping obligations
- Willingness to participate in weekend/holiday shifts
Your profile:
- Completed training as an animal caretaker – specializing in research and clinics, pet and boarding animal care, or zoos – or as a veterinary assistant.
- Experience in breeding and keeping genetically modified laboratory rodents under barrier conditions
- Experience working with birds is desirable.
- High degree of responsibility, diligence, resilience and teamwork skills
- Basic computer skills and experience in using animal husbandry databases
- Good German skills (spoken and written), good English skills (desirable)

Employment is on a salaried basis and is governed by the collective agreement for public sector employees in the German states (TV-L).
