Biological-technical assistant position

In the “Cassava Source-Sink” (CASS) group at the Chair of Biochemistry at Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU), we research the tropical crop cassava. Using biotechnological methods, we aim to improve the crop and optimize its yield. In a continuous improvement process, we create and test transgenic cassava plants for their physiological, biochemical, and growth-specific properties.

Your tasks

• Independent planning, execution and evaluation of analytical-biochemical investigations for the quantitative determination of metabolites and enzyme activities in plant samples using HPLC, IC, LC-MS/MS and spectrophotometric methods, including method development, validation and quality assurance.
• Planning, execution and evaluation of molecular biological and protein biochemical analyses (including qRT-PCR, PCR, cloning, gateway system, Northern blot, Southern blot, Western blot and gel electrophoresis) including genotyping, transcript analyses
• Establishment and execution of plant physiological, microbiological and phytopathological experiments with model and cultivated plants as well as phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria, including histological and microscopic analyses.
• Professional support, instruction and guidance of students and research staff in the use of laboratory equipment and experimental methods, as well as participation in practical university teaching.
• Organization of laboratory operations including equipment responsibility, maintenance of large analytical instruments, coordination of laboratory and order management, ensuring laboratory infrastructure, and participation in the documentation of scientific results and the preparation of publications.

Your profile

• Completed training as a biological-technical assistant (BTA) or comparable qualification with many years of professional experience
• Solid practical experience in molecular biological methods, especially in handling nucleic acids (e.g. PCR, qRT-PCR, cloning or comparable procedures)
• Ideally, experience in conducting analytical-biochemical investigations, such as enzyme assays, spectrophotometric analyses or chromatographic methods.
• Experience in handling modern laboratory equipment and interest in establishing and further developing experimental methods
• Proficient use of MS Office programs (Word and Excel)
• Excellent German skills (at least C2 level) and good English skills (at least B1 level)
• Independent, structured and meticulous work ethic as well as a high level of quality awareness
• Strong teamwork and communication skills, as well as a friendly and service-oriented demeanor.
• Physical resilience for work in the laboratory and greenhouse
• Intercultural competence is an advantage
