In a joint effort with the Center for Medical Genetics Ghent (CMGG; this will be the secondary host institution in a joint PhD program), the Center of Medical Genetics (CMG; primary host institution) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Antwerp is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of “Development of a Zebrafish Model of SMAD3-Dependent Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm for In Vivo Drug Screening”. Join us in tackling a silent killer Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) develops and progresses silently until life-threatening dissections and/or ruptures occur. No curative treatment currently exists. Among its genetic causes, Loeys-Dietz syndrome type 3 (driven by pathogenic variants in SMAD3), represents one of the most severe forms of the disease. In this PhD project, you will contribute to preclinical SMAD3-related TAA research by: 🐟 Developing a smad3 knockout zebrafish model, 🔬 Optimizing in vivo visualization of aortic enlargement and molecular dysfunction, 💊 Developing a pathogenic signalling-based drug screening assay. The project will be largely executed at the Antwerp CMG, embedded within the University of Antwerp and the Antwerp University Hospital. It has gained substantial know-how and hosts state-of-the-art infrastructure in the field of clinical, molecular and pathophysiological investigation of hereditary diseases, including heart and large vessel diseases, hearing loss, cancer, bone diseases and intellectual disability. Within this environment, the research teams of Prof. Verstraeten and Prof. Loeys spearhead the projects focused on cardiovascular and connective tissue disorders. The project will be co‑supervised by Prof. Sips from the CMGG at the Department of Biomolecular Medicine of Ghent University, where part of the work will be carried out. Prof. Sips has a strong expertise in zebrafish models of genetic cardiovascular disease and co‑leads the Ghent Heritable Thoracic Aortic Disease laboratory. Position You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in the field of preclinical TAA research, publishing high-quality scientific articles related to the research project. You will present your work at national and international scientific workshops and conferences. In particular, this doctoral project will focus on the role of bacterial effector chaperones in regulating effector stability, secretion, and functional targeting during infection. The goal of this research is to systematically dissect chaperone–effector interaction networks in enteropathogens using genetic and proteomics-based approaches. You will generate and characterize bacterial strains carrying targeted deletions of T3SS effector chaperones. You will investigate the impact of chaperone loss on effector expression, stability, and secretion using molecular microbiology and biochemical approaches. You will apply quantitative proteomics and interaction mapping approaches to identify chaperone-associated protein networks. You will integrate genetic, biochemical, and proteomics data to understand how effector chaperones coordinate the bacterial virulence program. You will contribute to the analysis and interpretation of large-scale proteomics datasets. You will present your work at scientific meetings and contribute to peer-reviewed publications. You will participate in the supervision of BSc and MSc students and contribute to the collaborative research environment of the laboratory. You will enroll in the Ghent University doctoral training programme and work towards obtaining a doctoral degree. PhD position in Biochemical research in Parkinson’s Disease

The Laboratory of Cellular Transport Systems (https://www.labcelltransport.com/), led by Prof. Peter Vangheluwe, and the Laboratory of Chemical Biology (https://www.verhelstlab.net/), led by Prof. Steven Verhelst, part of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, invites applications for a PhD candidate position. The candidate will conduct a joint PhD project investigating Parkinson’s disease under the supervision of Prof. Peter Vangheluwe and Prof. Steven Verhelst. Project Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common and fastest-growing neurodegenerative disease. Unfortunately, there is no treatment to halt or reverse disease progression. Loss-of-function of the lysosomal polyamine exporter ATP13A2 is causative for aggressive early and juvenile onset parkinsonisms, whereas impaired polyamine homeostasis has been reported in sporadic PD. Hence, activation of ATP13A2 has emerged as a prioritized therapeutic strategy for PD, but the regulation of ATP13A2 in lysosomes remains unclear. This project will explore the mechanism by which ATP13A2 is regulated by co-factors such as lipids and proteins i) in vitro on purified ATP13A2 protein and ii) in cells with modulated expression of ATP13A2. Insights into the regulatory mechanisms of ATP13A2 will connect ATP13A2 to other lysosomal pathways implicated in PD, and offer novel therapeutic strategies for ATP13A2 modulation. PhD position in Research on congenital left sided heart lesions: Impact Of Multi

The PhD project is situated in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences in collaboration with Human Genetics at KU Leuven. It is part of a European, interdisciplinary project in Pediatric Cardiology, Human Genetics, Gynecology and Neonatology, creating a supportive research environment for fundamental and translational studies of congenital heart diseases. Research will bridge genetic analysis in mother-child pairs, cardiac morphology and postnatal clinical presentation in children with left sided heart disease. Project This PhD position focusses on the wide spectrum of left sided heart lesions in children. They encompass conditions ranging from severe forms like hypoplastic left heart syndrome and aortic stenosis to milder forms of coarctation of the aorta. Despite advancements in surgical interventions, potential impairment of the systemic circulation and oxygen delivery can adversely affect long-term cardiovascular and neurological outcome. This research combines genetic analysis with clinical outcome parameters to  develop a screening and risk stratification model in left sided heart lesions. You will be part of a project that aims to integrate multi-omics technologies, clinical cardiac and neurological investigations, and machine learning to enhance early diagnosis and risk stratification in children with left sided heart disease. Both, genetic and clinical data will allow us to develop targeted diagnostic tools and personalized treatment approaches. In this context, you will coordinate the inclusion of patients, ensure the performance of all investigations and analyze clinical data. You will apply and analyze cardiac imaging, neuro monitoring and laboratory parameters. This approach provides an innovative and detailed clinical assessment and will significantly improve our understanding of the spectrum of congenital left sided heart diseases. Throughout the project, you will closely collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in pediatric cardiology, human genetics, gynecology, neonatology and intensive care medicine. Profile You are requested to have a master’s degree in medicine, biomedical science, neuroscience or bioengineering. Experience in cardiac hemodynamics, neuromonitoring and/or neurovascular coupling is a valuable asset for this PhD position. PhD position on plant-wearable sensors and machine learning for crop monitoring in horticulture

At the Department of Biosystems of the University of Leuven (Belgium), the lab of Prof. Bram Van de Poel conducts research on molecular plant hormone physiology and plant sensing technologies. The lab develops innovative tools, such as digital plant sensors, to monitor plant responses to environmental stress conditions in real time. We have an open full-time PhD position focused on the development of machine learning models for our patented plant-wearable sensors, to enable monitoring and prediction of plant stress for greenhouse crops. Website van de eenheid Project Greenhouse horticulture is increasingly moving toward data-driven crop management systems that allow growers to monitor crop status and optimize production in real time. While most current systems rely on environmental measurements such as temperature, humidity, and light, plants themselves generate physiological signals that directly reflect their stress status and growth dynamics. The Van de Poel lab has developed a non-invasive wireless plant-wearable motion sensor that measures subtle leaf and stem movements (patented). Previous research has shown that plant movement patterns change in response to abiotic stress before visible symptoms arrive, suggesting that these sensor signals may provide early indicators of plant stress and crop status. In this PhD project, you will generate and analyze large datasets of plant movement dynamics collected from greenhouse crops and develop computational methods to extract meaningful physiological signals from these data, to use the sensor for stress and growth prediction. Therefore, you will install networks of plant-wearable sensors within crop canopies in commercial and experimental greenhouse facilities, to generate high-resolution time-series data describing plant movement under different environmental conditions and stress factors. A central focus of the project will be the development of signal processing, time-series analysis, and machine learning approaches (e.g. Efficiently Supervised Generative Adversarial Network) to detect patterns in plant movement and relate them to plant stress and crop status. The long-term ambition is to develop a reliable non-invasive plant-wearable sensing system that enables early detection of plant stress, and supports more autonomous crop monitoring and decision-making in greenhouse horticulture. This PhD project will train you to become a scientist who is ready for future challenges. This means that you will be conducting cutting-edge research under the close supervision of Prof Van de Poel, collaborate with your colleagues (within and outside the lab) and participate in the daily activities of the lab. You are encouraged to guide master’s thesis students, participate at national and international conferences and disseminate your research results in scientific publications. You will also contribute to a larger applied research project conducted in collaboration with experimental research stations and industry partners in the Flemish and Dutch greenhouse horticulture sector (Interreg project). We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in bioinformatics to join The Genomic Regulation for Precision Cancer Medicine Lab at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. The position is full-time and will be filled for a fixed-term period of two years. The Genomic Regulation for Precision Cancer Medicine Lab is led by Alfonso Urbanucci. The research group focuses on Genomic Regulation for Precision Cancer Medicine with particular emphasis on prostate cancer, and it is part of the Prostate Cancer Research Centre (PCRC). The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. Position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Medical Biology

The position Do you hold a PhD in molecular biology (or a related field) and have a strong interest in the molecular mechanisms underlying antibiotic resistance development? Are you motivated to conduct interdisciplinary research at one of the northernmost universities in the world? If so, this postdoctoral position may be of interest to you. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Department of Medical Biology, Faculty of Health Sciences, within the Host–Microbe Interaction (HMI) research group. The position is part of the LacZymes, led by Dr. Christopher Frøhlich, and entitled “Epistasis and Evolution of β-Lactamase-Mediated Antimicrobial Resistance.” The position is a fixed term position for a duration of 3 years.  As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will have the opportunity to advance your scientific career and further qualify for academic positions. If you do not already have the educational competence that meets the requirements for an Associate Professor position in Norway, UiT will arrange such competence during the employment period. The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer. If you receive a personal overseas research grant from NFR it is possible to apply NFR for an extension of the fellowship period corresponding to the length of the stay abroad (minimum three months, maximum 12 months). Unless special circumstances indicate otherwise, postdoctoral projects shall be planned with stays abroad. The duration should be at least 6 months. The position’s field of work The successful candidate will join a newly funded Research Council of Norway (FUTURE-AMR) project and work closely with researchers and students to uncover molecular mechanisms of epistasis arising during the evolution of β-lactamases. To address these questions, the project integrates ancestral sequence reconstruction, directed evolution, pre-steady-state and steady-state enzyme kinetics, and X-ray crystallography. The postdoctoral fellow will report to Dr. Christopher Frøhlich and is expected to actively contribute to advancing the field while developing expertise at the interface of molecular biology, enzymology, and evolutionary microbiology. Candidates who have not yet defended their PhD must submit parts of your dissertation along with the application, and provide documentation from their supervisor confirming that the defense will be completed before the start of the position. Experience in at least two of the following areas: directed evolution, protein expression and purification, biochemical characterization of enzymes, X-ray crystallography. DTU Bioengineering is excited to announce a 3½ year postdoctoral researcher position, as part of the newly launched global initiative for Biofertilizer Innovation and Science. IBIS is a bold, five-year open-science initiative with the ambition to revolutionize whole-cell biosolutions in agriculture (BioAg). Our goal is to advance the fundamental understanding of what makes an effective biofertilizer and to develop the enabling technologies and translational framework needed to bring robust and affordable microbial solutions to farmers across the globe. The initiative is supported by 210 million DKK (approximately 30 million USD) in combined funding from the Gates Foundation and the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Central to the initiative is the development of an open R&D playbook—freely accessible to researchers worldwide—to accelerate the discovery, maturation, and deployment of scientifically validated microbial biofertilizers. DTU is coordinating the newly established IBIS consortium, which brings together leading partners from across Europe, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Each partner contributes unique expertise and experimental capacity spanning the entire biofertilizer R&D pipeline—from laboratory research to field implementation. Together, the consortium will build a comprehensive Biosolutions Development Pipeline for microbial biofertilizers (whole-cell biosolutions), covering all key stages: discovery, characterization, fermentation, formulation, in planta performance, and in-field evaluation. DTU will host the laboratory phase of the pipeline, harnessing advanced robotic workflows and high-throughput screening technologies. Field trials and upscaling activities will be carried out through partner institutions across both the Global South and North, ensuring real-world testing across diverse agricultural contexts. Beyond the research itself, IBIS aims to implement standardized experimental protocols, harmonized data formats, and transparent documentation practices—laying the foundation for reproducible and collaborative research in biofertilizer innovation. The IBIS development pipeline is designed to enable high-throughput benchmarking and advancement of new whole-cell–based biosolutions, supporting their journey from discovery to market launch. The IBIS consortium will use the pipeline to systematically evaluate hundreds of microbial biofertilizer strains, generating large-scale datasets across all stages—from laboratory experiments (thousands of strains) to in-field testing. The scale and standardized approach will create a unique foundation for advanced data analysis, including AI, machine learning, and statistical modelling, aimed at uncovering the key traits that define successful microbial biofertilizers, and to develop predictive models that can guide the rational design of next-generation BioAg products tailored for diverse agricultural systems around the world. This postdoctoral researcher position offers a unique opportunity to join a dedicated, international team of scientists working within the IBIS initiative at DTU and its partner institutions worldwide. You will work collaboratively to address foundational biological questions about the biology of microbial biofertilizers, enabling the efficient engineering and development of solutions. Your contributions will include developing and implementing new robotics-assisted high throughput assay to screen for and characterize microbial biosolutions as an essential part of the Biosolutions Development Pipeline. Your responsibilities: Experience designing automated workflows that generate structured, traceable experimental datasets, with strong attention to data quality and reproducibility Design, develop, and implement new robotic-based phenotypic assays to characterize microbial strain capabilities, robustness, and performance-relevant traits. Strong understanding of microbial physiology and phenotypic traits relevant to strain performance Run and optimize phenotypic screening and characterization workflows to generate large standardized data sets. Focus of scientific work: Identify and quantify traits that may serve as diagnostic predictors of strain performance in manufacturing and under field conditions. Analyze assay outputs to define biologically meaningful trait signatures associated with robustness, manufacturability, and efficacy.
