The labs of Prof. Devang Mehta (https://mehta-lab.com) and Prof. Hervé Vanderschuren (https://vanderschuren-lab.com) conducts research in experimental plant systems biology and tropical plant biotechnology respectively in the Division of Crop Biotechnics (Department of Biosystems) at KU Leuven (Belgium). The laboratories have expertise in and access to cutting-edge technologies including in-house long-read sequencing and access to the latest-generation proteomics mass-spectrometry infrastructure and are part of the Leuven Institute for Single-Cell Omics and the Leuven Plant Institute. In this PhD project, you will explore how the plant circadian clock helps plants sense and respond to latitude based on our recent discoveries (Mehta et al., 2024, Science Advances ). Combining directed evolution, cutting-edge environmental simulation systems, and advanced multi-omics approaches, you will discover the genetic mechanisms underlying latitudinal adaptation in Arabidopsis thaliana. Your findings will help lay the foundation for breeding and engineering the next generation of climate-resilient crops. One of the laboratory’s research areas focuses on understanding how environmental stressors, such as micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), affect the respiratory system of humans and animals and may increase susceptibility to (zoonotic) respiratory infections. In addition, the laboratory investigates the microbiome of healthy and diseased animals to identify microbial communities that contribute positively to respiratory health. To address these research questions, the laboratory employs state-of-the-art molecular and cellular technologies, providing an innovative and multidisciplinary research environment. YOUR TASKS The Laboratory of Virology is seeking a talented and highly motivated PhD candidate with a strong interest in respiratory diseases in pigs, the respiratory microbiome, the zoonotic potential of swine viruses, and the impact of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) on these processes. Porcine respiratory disease complex is one of the most significant health and economic challenges facing the swine industry and results from complex interactions between pathogens, environmental stressors, and host factors. Due to the widespread use of plastics, MNPs are increasingly accumulating in various ecosystems, including agricultural environments. MNPs originating from sources such as textile fibers, plastic enrichment materials, slatted flooring, and components of feeding, drinking, and ventilation systems may play an important role in respiratory health, yet their contribution remains largely unexplored. During your PhD, you will investigate the presence, characteristics, and plastisphere (microbiome) of MNPs on pig farms. In addition, you will study how MNPs and the microbiome influence respiratory health in both pigs and humans by unraveling their fundamental interactions under controlled laboratory conditions. Your research will be situated at the interface of molecular virology, MNP characterization, microbiome research, and bioinformatics. You will collect samples on pig farms, isolate and culture primary respiratory epithelial cells, and analyze transcriptomic, RNA-sequencing, and microbiome datasets. To achieve these objectives, you will employ a broad range of advanced laboratory techniques, including (RT-)qPCR, virus titration, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, nanopore sequencing, fluorescence and confocal microscopy, as well as bioinformatics tools such as R and Python. This multidisciplinary project offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative research at the intersection of animal health, environmental pollution, and zoonotic disease, ultimately leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. Job description We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to study the regulation of immune responses in lymph nodes. The project focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms that mediate the transfer of lymph-borne antigens from lymphatic vessels into lymph nodes and the effects of antigens on lymph node lymphatic endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and resident myeloid cells. Our long-term goal is to develop novel approaches for locally modulating immune responses within specific lymph nodes during cancer, inflammatory diseases, and vaccination. We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher to model gut microbiome metabolism in in vitro fermentations of plant-based protein-rich foods. The project will explore how gut microbiome produces harmful or health-supporting metabolites from processed plant-based products (e.g. oatmeal, tofu, protein concentrate preparations). The research is led by Matti Ruuskanen, PhD, Docent in Microbiology, who works as a University Lecturer in the Food Sciences Unit at the Department of Life Technologies, University of Turku. The research uses data collected in the previous Newplant project funded by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation. Ruuskanen has previously investigated the connections between gut and skin microbiota and human health and chronic diseases and has developed methods for microbiome data science and bioinformatics. The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Doctoral Researcher position at the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences on the Kuopio Campus. The position focuses on multimodal cancer imaging and will be filled for a fixed term of 3 years from 1 September 2026 onwards (or as agreed). Role and Salary The cross-disciplinary consortium project “Cancer immunotherapy utilizing multifunctional vector technology, PET imaging and metabolic MRI“, funded by the Research Council of Finland, focuses on the development of a novel preclinical cancer immunotherapy against triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), and on the development of advanced PET and MRI techniques (in particular deuterium and carbon based metabolic MRI and state-of-the art diffusion MRI) for the detection of therapy related cell death in preclinical animal models. The candidate will work in the multimodal imaging arm of the project and will develop methods that will be then applied to cancer therapy models in collaboration with our partner developing immunotherapy approaches on the same campus. During the project, you will become familiar with laboratory animal handling, preclinical multimodal imaging (MRI and PET, including method development), data analysis and scientific communication. The primary task of the Doctoral Researcher is to carry out their doctoral research in accordance with the approved research plan.
