Position of Postdoctoral Researcher or Senior Research Fellow in human physiology

The research unit includes 18 research groups. The research of the unit aims at identifying preventive measures and novel therapeutic approaches for common debilitating diseases while ensuring safe pharmacotherapy and informing of environmental exposures and chemical risks. The unit utilizes human cohorts, clinical trials, human exercise testing and training, autopsy and biobank samples, genomics, animal models, as well as advanced cell and 3D tissue models to study metabolic, cardiovascular, immune, and environmental disease mechanisms. About the job We are interested in applicants strengthening the research focus of the Research Unit of Biomedicine and Internal Medicine in the field of human physiology / whole-body metabolic regulation and environmental physiology. The postdoctoral researcher/ senior research fellow will be a dynamic individual who provides vision, leadership, and guidance in the field of human physiology. The successful applicant should have a strong background in research and teaching of metabolic whole body physiology / metabolic regulation and environmental physiology. The duties of applicant are to take part in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the medical school. The reguirements for Postdoctoral Researcher:  Doctoral degree preferably in whole body human physiology / environmental physiology. . The doctoral degree must have been completed by the closing date for applications. The position requires the ability to lead a research team and to acquire supplementary research funding. In the selection process, working in more than one research institute during a career is emphasized, especially scientific work abroad and evidence of international cooperation. Position of Professor in Nutrition and cardiometabolic health

The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry invites applications for the position of Professor in Nutrition and cardiometabolic health for a five-year fixed-term appointment. The position can be filled from 1.12.2026 onwards or as agreed and the position will be located at the Department of Food and Nutrition. Professor in Nutrition and Cardiometabolic Health is positioned at the intersection of nutrition science, cardiometabolic health, public health, metabolic research and food science. The professor focuses on the role of nutrition in the prevention of cardiometabolic diseases and contributes to population-based health promotion strategies. The professor should have an appropriate combination of expertise in the following areas: Nutrition and cardiometabolic health in the population: in-depth knowledge of the significance of diet, dietary patterns, foods, nutrients or bioactive food compounds in promoting cardiometabolic health. Mechanistic insights into the role of nutrition in promoting cardiometabolic health: the ability to investigate the interactions of metabolic pathways, such as lipid metabolism, inflammation, insulin resistance, and the gut microbiome. Approaches may include genetics, epigenetics, metabolomics, proteomics, and/or chronobiology, as well as related intervention trials and/or observational population studies. Food and its ingredients: the ability to assess the impact of foods, particularly functional and new plant-based products, on cardiometabolic health. Population and translational research: experience in conducting epidemiological studies, clinical trials, or translational interventions bridging basic science with public health implementation. Join us in tackling a silent killer Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) develops and progresses silently until life-threatening dissections and/or ruptures occur. No curative treatment currently exists. Among its genetic causes, Loeys-Dietz syndrome type 3 (driven by pathogenic variants in SMAD3), represents one of the most severe forms of the disease. In this PhD project, you will contribute to preclinical SMAD3-related TAA research by: 🐟 Developing a smad3 knockout zebrafish model, 🔬 Optimizing in vivo visualization of aortic enlargement and molecular dysfunction, 💊 Developing a pathogenic signalling-based drug screening assay. The project will be largely executed at the Antwerp CMG, embedded within the University of Antwerp and the Antwerp University Hospital. It has gained substantial know-how and hosts state-of-the-art infrastructure in the field of clinical, molecular and pathophysiological investigation of hereditary diseases, including heart and large vessel diseases, hearing loss, cancer, bone diseases and intellectual disability. Within this environment, the research teams of Prof. Verstraeten and Prof. Loeys spearhead the projects focused on cardiovascular and connective tissue disorders. The project will be co‑supervised by Prof. Sips from the CMGG at the Department of Biomolecular Medicine of Ghent University, where part of the work will be carried out. In particular, this doctoral project will focus on the role of bacterial effector chaperones in regulating effector stability, secretion, and functional targeting during infection. The goal of this research is to systematically dissect chaperone–effector interaction networks in enteropathogens using genetic and proteomics-based approaches. You will generate and characterize bacterial strains carrying targeted deletions of T3SS effector chaperones. You will investigate the impact of chaperone loss on effector expression, stability, and secretion using molecular microbiology and biochemical approaches. You will apply quantitative proteomics and interaction mapping approaches to identify chaperone-associated protein networks. You will integrate genetic, biochemical, and proteomics data to understand how effector chaperones coordinate the bacterial virulence program. You will contribute to the analysis and interpretation of large-scale proteomics datasets. You will present your work at scientific meetings and contribute to peer-reviewed publications. You will participate in the supervision of BSc and MSc students and contribute to the collaborative research environment of the laboratory. You will enroll in the Ghent University doctoral training programme and work towards obtaining a doctoral degree.
