Postdoctoral Fellow position in Neuroscience

Description of the research group The research group led by Professor Thomas Perlmann focuses on how specific cell types in the central nervous system develop and how they are maintained. Our work is primarily directed toward dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain, and we use advanced methods to study how different dopaminergic cell types differ from one another and why some are more vulnerable than others in patients with Parkinson’s disease. The projects aim to understand functions relevant to neuronal vulnerability in Parkinson’s disease and to develop strategies aimed at counteracting neurodegeneration. Your mission We are seeking a researcher for a postdoctoral position focused on studies in several different mouse models of Parkinson’s disease. The candidate should be highly motivated and have a strong interest in working with experimental animals. The work will include histological analysis of brain tissue as well as a range of behavioural assays. The position involves close collaboration with researchers from diverse backgrounds, including an ongoing collaboration with clinical researchers. You will lead your own project and be responsible for the strategies and methods used. Independence is critical, but the project will also depend on close collaboration with team members and with researchers in collaborating laboratories. Senior Lab manager position

Postdoctoral fellow position in Chromatin Biology and Transcriptional Regulation

In the research group led by Laura Baranello, we are particularly interested in the molecular mechanisms defining the crosstalk between transcription, DNA topology and chromatin folding, with the aim to design improved strategies for anti-cancer treatment. Division The Baranello Lab –Drawing from our expertise in the fields of topoisomerase and cancer biology, we aim to answer fundamental questions about how transcription, replication and DNA topology are functionally coordinated in human cells. We use state-of-the-art approaches to assess transcriptomic, epigenomic and replisomic profiles, as well as molecular biology, advanced microscopy and drug screens to understand how topoisomerase regulation affects fundamental nuclear processes (key lab references: Baranelloet al.Cell 2016; Wiegardet al.Molecular Cell 2021; Daset al.Molecular Cell 2022; Cameronet al.Science Advances 2023). The overall aim is to reveal novel cancer therapy targets and improved strategies for personalized treatment. Recently we have identified a protein complex called “topoisome” in which the oncoprotein MYC recruits and increases the catalytic activities of both Topoisomerase 1 and 2 to promote high rates of transcription (Daset al.Molecular Cell 2022). The successful candidate will play a leading role in a full-time research project funded by the European Research Council, focused to address the functional role of the topoisome during transcription. Specifically we want to study the coordination of the topoisome and the transcriptional machinery. The outcome of this work is predicted to inspire a new strategy to target MYC in cancer, which will be tested in MYC-driven cancer models. This multidisciplinary project involves master biochemistry, master molecular biology, proteomics/genomics, and computational analysis. The postdoc will plan and execute experiments, analyze data, interpret, and present the results, supervise students as well as write scientific articles, initially under partial supervision but with greater independence going forward. As Assistant Professor in Daniel Lundqvist’s research group, you will be responsible for the group’s research activities concerning movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease with academic freedom and responsibility to develop your independent line of research. Your work will investigate how Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative and movement disorders change neuronal activity and brain networks that impact motor and cognitive symptoms and their interactions. You will apply state-of-the-art multimodal neuroimaging approaches including next-generation magnetoencephalography, functional and structural MRI, and PET combined with clinical evaluations and advanced behavioral tracking using wearables to uncover relationships between behavior and brain function and their disruption by neurodegeneration. Together with the research group leader you will recruit and supervise team members, including research staff and students, and are expected to contribute to departmental activities. Ph.D position in ‘Examining long non-coding RNA function in human adipocytes’

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required. The research group The adipocyte expresses over 4000 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA), many uniquely expressed in fat cells. However, how these polymeric molecules function in concert with the metabolic machinery of the cell is not well understood. In our laboratory, we investigate how lncRNAs adapt the adipocyte for specialised function, specifically in the context of lipid droplet metabolism. Our investigation focuses on lncRNAs that may underline compromised metabolic flexibility and contribute to cardiometabolic disease pathogenesis. We integrate findings from well-characterized human white adipose tissue (WAT) biopsies and large population genetics to identify lncRNAs implicated in lipid metabolism and cardiometabolic disease. The disease-associated lncRNAs are investigated in human adipocyte cell models and using CRISPRi/a gene perturbation coupled to lipidomic/metabolomics, we aim to understand the effect of the lncRNA expression on adipocyte metabolism. In addition, we use gene variant editing in human adipocytes to understand how single nucleotide polymorphisms located in lncRNA gene loci lead to alterations in lipid droplet metabolism. Long noncoding RNA in the adipocyte – Alastair Kerr Research Group The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student This doctoral project will investigate the role of hundreds of lncRNA simultaneously to determine which lncRNA impact adipocyte function and in turn uncover a novel way to target these metabolically important cells. To expand how many lncRNA can be functionally examined at a time, the student will develop state-of-the-art genetically modified human adipocyte cell systems that allow the precise temporal perturbation of selected lncRNA. Combining advanced imaging and transcriptomic readouts, we aim to systematically examine all adipocyte lncRNAs associated with obesity. The student will progress lncRNAs found to impact the function of the adipocyte into detailed molecular studies, where they will use imaging and in-house developed pulldown methodology to uncover how these lncRNAs function at a molecular resolution. There will be an emphasis on characterizing the structure of these lncRNAs to define the functional aptamers necessary to regulate the defined adipocyte function. The doctoral student will be trained in computational and molecular biology analyses to identify candidate lncRNAs and develop an investigational pipeline to understand how they function. The student will be involved in learning from current lab members and teaching future lab members that will be hired. What do we offer? Prostate cancer shows significant clinical and genomic disparity, with men of African ancestry adversely impacted. Having access to globally unique resources, the Hayes Lab is interested in uncovering the genomic and environmental drivers for this health disparity. Using largely bulk multi-omic approaches, the team has been identifying African-specific molecular subtypes, which have been further linked to patient-matched environmental exposures. Here the team has been funded to interrogate for the role of toxic heavy metals, with their known endocrine disruptive potential. While revealing new insights, the next phase of this research is to undercover which cells within the prostate tissue are most susceptible to toxic heavy metals, their impact on cancer growth and associated aggressive disease and health disparities. Ultimately, the successful candidate will aim to determine the role of heavy metals in the initiation and evolution of prostate cancer through fostering recent advances in single-cell proteomic technologies, including a most recent Australian Prostate Cancer Foundation (ACRF) Single Cell Proteomic Laboratory. The successful candidate should have a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, cancer genomics or a related field with essential PhD experience in single-cell research and data analytics, ideally in proteomics or transcriptomics. The candidate should have evidence for high-impact publications, experience working with HPC environments, fluent in R, while ideally have demonstrated experience in cancer or evolutionary genomics.
