Researcher-expert metabolic regulation of microglia physiology in Alzheimer’s disease (100%)

Your function We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to strengthen our dynamic research team. Our research group investigates the role of lipid metabolism in neurological and autoimmune diseases, with a particular focus on neuroinflammation and brain repair (www.bogielab.com). A major research line focuses on microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system. Previous work from our group has demonstrated that disturbances in fatty acid metabolism can drive microglia toward a disease-promoting phenotype. In this project, we build on these findings by investigating how a post-translational modification known as S-acylation – whereby fatty acids are covalently attached to proteins – modulates microglial physiology and function in the context of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, we examine whether targeted modulation of these modifications can help slow disease progression. You will employ state-of-the-art methods and model systems, including iPSC-derived microglia and patient material, animal models, advanced omics approaches (such as lipidomics, proteomics, and RNA sequencing), molecular and metabolic analyses, immunohistochemistry, and multicolor flow cytometry. In addition to conducting high-quality research, you will supervise PhD and master’s students, actively contribute to grant writing, and participate in teaching activities. These groups have strong expertise in plant-microbe-insect interactions, plant resilience and underlying molecular mechanisms, combining microbiology, microbial ecology, molecular biology, plant physiology, entomology, chemical ecology and ‘omics’ approaches. This project aims to investigate how egg-associated microbes influence the host location behavior of egg parasitoids, including the underlying molecular mechanisms. Specifically, you will isolate and identify key bacteria consistently found on eggshells and examine their role in (1) egg-mediated plant defense and long-range parasitoid foraging, (2) egg-mediated priming and enhanced parasitoid attraction, and (3) short-range host location behavior. Website van de eenheid Project Disruptions in megakaryocyte maturation and platelet formation can be caused by an inherited disorder. Studying platelet biogenesis in humans is very challenging due to the limitations of bone marrow sampling. Although the two main platelet receptors, GPIb-IX-V and integrin αIIbβ3, have been identified and extensively studied for their role in platelet function for decades, their involvement in platelet biogenesis remains unclear. Thus, this project seeks to identify the pathological mechanisms (genes and pathways) that contribute to impaired platelet formation in Bernard-Soulier syndrome (BSS), Glanzmann throm basthenia (GT), and GT-like syndrome. We plan to leverage patient studies, cell models, and transcriptomics to pinpoint key factors involved in pathogenic platelet biogenesis. Should candidate genes and pathways be identified, they will be further explored in pluripotent stem cell-derived disease models and patients with unexplained inherited thrombocytopenia. In the long term, our goal is also to improve platelet biogenesis through in vitro megakaryocyte culture assays, based on insights gained from this research. Position of PhD under the “Diabetes prevention in women with a history of gestational diabetes”

We are seeking a PhD student to participate in a large multicenter study to determine whether the GLP-1 agonist semaglutide can prevent type 2 diabetes after a recent history of gestational diabetes. The Endocrinology Department at University Hospitals Leuven has extensive experience in setting up translational and clinical research in the field of diabetes and is an internationally renowned research center. Twelve medical staff members work in the Endocrinology Department. We have a large multidisciplinary team of research nurses, clinical research assistants, diabetes educators, dietitians, and psychologists. Several members of the clinical department also conduct basic research in the Department of Clinical & Experimental Endocrinology at KU Leuven. Prof. K. Benhalima is an international expert in the field of diabetes and pregnancy. Prof. K. Benhalima completed a large multicenter Belgian study in which 2,000 pregnant women were recruited early in pregnancy to compare different screening strategies for gestational diabetes (the BEDIP-N study). This is the largest study ever conducted on gestational diabetes in Belgium. Based on this research, new guidelines for gestational diabetes screening in Belgium were developed. Prof. Benhalima’s other research topics include pre-existing diabetes and pregnancy, new technologies (such as glucose sensors and smart insulin pumps), type 2 diabetes prevention, and type 2 diabetes in young adults. Prof. Benhalima’s research group currently has four doctoral students. Website of the unit Project The SERENA study (Semaglutide for the treatment of glucose intolerance in women with prior gestational diabetes: a double-blind RCT) is a collaboration between 13 Belgian centers (University Hospitals Leuven, University Hospitals Zaventem, University Hospitals Brussels, University Hospitals Groeninge Kortrijk, Jan Yperman Ieper, St Jan Brugge, University Hospitals Turnhout, ZNA, OLV Aalst-Asse, University Hospitals St Niklaas, Centre Hospitalier Mouscron, University Hospital Liège, and Erasme). This study is ongoing, and recruitment is expected to be completed in mid-2026.Participants will be followed for a maximum of 3.5 years. The goal is to randomize 252 women with prediabetes to Ozempic (semaglutide) or placebo (both groups will receive standardized lifestyle advice). The study is powered by the prevention of type 2 diabetes. There will be a study visit every 6 months (alternating between fasting blood tests and a 75g oral glucose tolerance test). This study receives funding from the FWO (FWO-TBM grant).  As part of your doctoral research, you will assist with clinical research, administering questionnaires, and collecting blood samples from participants at University Hospitals Leuven. Other tasks include database management and coordination of the other Belgian centers participating in the study. Additionally, as part of your PhD, you will be able to contribute to an IPD meta-analysis on the use of glucose sensors in gestational diabetes. PhD Fellowship in Biological Science – One Health Perspectives on Marine Environmental Pollution

Job description The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a PhD Fellowship in Biological Science at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Chemistry, Bioscience and Environmental Engineering. The position is vacant from August 2026. This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development through a PhD education leading to a doctoral degree. The hired candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Science and Technology. The education includes relevant courses amounting to about six months of study, a dissertation based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, relevant academic communication, a trial lecture and public defence. A career plan will be prepared that specifies the competencies that the Research Fellow will acquire. Access to career guidance will be provided throughout the doctoral education. Research topic The successful candidate will be affiliated with the newly EU funded project Hazard Assessment of Marine Mixtures and New Pollutant Synergies, HARMONY (Horizon Europe call HORIZON-CL6-2025-01), an interdisciplinary research project grounded in a One Health perspective, investigating the cumulative effects of complex mixtures of marine environmental contaminants on organisms, ecosystems, and human health, including interactions with climate-related stressors such as rising temperature and ocean acidification. The project integrates chemical analyses, biological effect studies, and laboratory experiments with the development of AI-based models to map bioaccumulation, mechanisms of toxicity, and combined risk profiles across biological levels. Through this holistic approach, the project aims to strengthen the knowledge base for risk assessment and sustainable marine management, and to contribute to the implementation of the EU Green Deal, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and international One Health strategies. Qualification requirements We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed a five-year master degree within biosciences, chemistry, or related natural science fields (such as biology, environmental science, cell biology, or biochemistry), preferably acquired recently; or who possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate. Postdoctoral Fellow position in the molecular biology of Neurodegenerative diseases

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate who has recently completed, or is close to completing, a PhD and has training in statistics, data processing, bioinformatics, or a related discipline, to contribute to research on disorders of the brain. You will work with some degree of independence as a postdoctoral researcher in a group studying Parkinson’s disease and other alpha-synuclein–related diseases (alpha-synucleinopathies) within the David Bäckström lab (umu.se), primarily multiple system atrophy (MSA) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Our aim is to understand what causes these diseases, how synapses in the brain are affected in them, how these disorders lead to dementia, and—if possible—how they can be treated or prevented. Project Description The research group currently consists of 3–5 members and collaborates closely with the Departments of Neurology, Pathology, and Radiology at Norrlands University Hospital (NUS), as well as Umeå University. The group includes a principal investigator, a PhD student, a research nurse, and several affiliated researchers and students. Our research spans the spectrum from epidemiological studies to analyses of cerebrospinal fluid, genetics, and protein biochemistry related to Parkinson’s disease and other alpha-synucleinopathies. A major focus is on genetic and lifestyle-related risk factors in individuals affected by these currently incurable disorders, to understand their causes and how they relate to synaptic dysfunction and impaired cell endocytosis. This research involves both clinical studies of patients and molecular biological analyses carried out locally in Umeå and through international collaborations, enabling robust findings across multiple datasets. Statistical methods include regression analyses, protein quantitative trait locus (pQTL) analyses to study how genetic variation influences protein levels relevant to disease, epidemiological methods such as survival analysis, and analyses of health-registry data preceding disease onset. Administrative tasks may also be included. You will work under supervision but with significant independence. Our recent findings implicate GPCR signaling as a potential regulator of hypoxia-induced suppression of food intake. This project seeks to define how GPCR signaling contributes to anorexic responses under hypoxic conditions, using C. elegans as the primary model. By combining genetic, physiological, and behavioral approaches, the study will dissect how hypoxic cues are detected and translated into changes in feeding behavior, providing mechanistic insight into how oxygen availability modulates appetite. Work responsibilities The candidate is expected to independently plan and execute experimental studies, including the generation of mutant and transgenic strains, the establishment and optimization of behavioral assays under controlled oxygen conditions, image‑based analyses, and quantitative data processing and interpretation. The role also includes active participation in manuscript preparation and the supervision of students. Description of the project and work responsibilities The project involves basic science and clinical research samples, with particular focus on the role of autologous fat in regenerative plastic surgery and investigation of the tumor microenvironment usingin-vitrosystems. Ongoing projects in which the successful applicant will participate include: i) investigating whether reconstruction with autologous fat transplantation increases the risk of breast cancer in BRCA-carriers, ii) exploring the role of fibroblasts in breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma and iii) exploring the role of autologous fat and muscle cells in breast reconstruction with autologous tissue transfer.
