The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is seeking a PhD student with a focus on biosecurity from a systems perspective. The position is located at the Department of Clinical Sciences, in close collaboration with the Department of Animal Biosciences. Subject description Biosecurity is a central component of a sustainable and resilient animal production system and constitutes an important part of integrated work on animal health, disease control, and prevention. From a systems perspective, biosecurity interacts with other measures such as animal health monitoring, vaccination, and breeding for increased robustness. There are, however, significant knowledge gaps regarding how the effects of biosecurity practices can be measured, monitored, and evaluated at the national level. Project description The PhD project focuses on developing and evaluating indicators for the effects of biosecurity from an integrated management perspective. The project is linked to the EU-funded collaboration EUPHAW (European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare). The overall aim the project is to define, test, and evaluate indicators that reflect the effects of biosecurity in interaction with animal health monitoring and other disease-preventive measures, such as vaccination and breeding for increased resilience. The PhD student will specifically: Coordinate the development of a conceptual model for biosecurity from a systems perspective Work with analyses of Swedish national data to evaluate the effects of biosecurity measures Contribute to methodological development for integrated analysis of biosecurity, animal health, and disease control Actively participate in national and international collaborations within EUPHAW and related networks The project is conducted in an interdisciplinary environment with strong links to veterinary medicine, epidemiology, and preventive animal health. Duties The main task is to pursue doctoral studies, which includes planning, conducting, analyzing, and publishing research results as well as attend courses. The position may also include teaching, primarily in epidemiology, as well as some administrative duties, in accordance with SLU regulations. Qualifications We are looking for a candidate who has: A veterinary degree A strong interest in epidemiology and biosecurity Strong communication skills in English and Swedish, both spoken and written Assessment Criteria Assessment will consider motivation and interest in the research project, ability to work independently and in a team, analytical skills, and experience with epidemiological methods, as well as collaboration and communication skills. Experience in teaching and epidemiological research is considered an asset. The position will be offered to the applicant deemed to have the best potential to carry out the research tasks. Eligibility To be eligible for doctoral studies, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree or have completed at least four years of full-time studies, of which at least one year at the second-cycle level. The employment covers four years of full-time doctoral studies, with the possibility of extension due to teaching or other departmental duties in accordance with applicable agreements. Project description The doctoral position is based at the Man-Technology-Environment (MTM) Research Centre, recognized leader in environmental and health-related research. MTM conducts multidisciplinary studies in chemistry and biology to address key societal challenges. The overall aim of the doctoral project is to understand environmental safety and human health hazards of recycled plastics and plastic waste flows by studying related chemicals. The objectives are to identify plastic-associated compounds that have adverse health impacts. The position is open to candidates with a background in biology or toxicology. The candidate will conduct experimental work integrating high-content imaging (Cell Painting), receptor-reporter assays, and data analysis to support toxicological assessment of recycled plastics and plastic-associated chemicals. The doctoral student project will be supervised by a group of supervisors from biology and chemistry. The programme and the doctoral studentship The doctoral student will take part of a research project funded by the Knowledge and Competence Foundation (Jubileumsdoktorander | KK-stiftelsen). The project has a strong emphasis on collaboration and includes networking activities with industry and 43 other doctoral students and supervisors in different areas of knowledge from different universities in Sweden. The doctoral programme consists of courses and an independent research project that you will present in a doctoral thesis. The programme concludes with a doctoral degree and comprises 240 credits, which corresponds to four years of full-time study. Our ambition is for your doctoral studies to be stimulating and purposeful throughout the programme until you have obtained your doctoral degree. A thorough introduction will therefore get you off to a good start and provide a solid foundation on which you can build your studies. As a doctoral student at Örebro University, you will be offered a specially tailored seminar series, covering matters ranging from doctoral programme rules and careers to support during the study period and networking. The place on the programme is linked to a full-time doctoral studentship for the duration of the study programme, which corresponds to four years of full-time study. The initial salary for a doctoral studentship is SEK 32,300 a month. Entry requirements and selection For admission to doctoral studies, applicants are required to meet both general entry requirements and specific entry requirements. In addition, applicants must be considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the programme. For a full account of the entry requirements, refer to the admissions regulations as well as to annex 2 of the general syllabus for biology. Applicants meet the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in biology and/or toxicology if they have received a passing grade on courses of at least 120 credits in biology or related fields, including an independent project at the advanced course level or on the second cycle, as well as at least a further 30 credits on the second cycle. A person who has acquired substantially corresponding knowledge, in Sweden or abroad, also meets the specific entry requirements. A person with credits or qualifications from undergraduate programmes under the previous higher education system corresponding to the entry requirements in the previous paragraph will also be eligible. In such cases, the higher advanced course level/80 credit level under the older provisions shall be considered as corresponding to the second cycle under the current system. About the position Planning and conducting fieldwork; inspection and maintenance of experimental wildlife deterrent units; analysis of video footage and image material from wildlife cameras; participation in thesis writing and scientific publications; acting as a liaison with a French research team. Your profile You must hold at least a Master’s degree in biology with a specialization in ethology or wildlife biology, have extensive practical experience in ethological studies involving wildlife cameras and wildlife deterrent systems, and possess strong skills in the use of the analysis tools BORIS, R, and Python. Experience with international, particularly French, collaborations is considered an asset. You are fluent in spoken and written French and English and hold a valid driving licence.
