Ph.D position aquatic ecology

Field of subject for the appointment: Ecology. Starting date: Starting date as agreed upon. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between the two may be required.   Job description This project is funded by the Swedish Research Council and concerns vitamin deficiency in animals, with a primary focus on salmon and vitamin B1 (thiamine). All organisms need thiamine for essential cellular functions. The vitamin is produced mainly by plants and microorganisms, but because it is water‑soluble, it cannot be stored to any significant extent. In species such as salmon and seabirds, deficiencies have recently been discovered, causing behavioral disturbances and high mortality in their offspring. The problem threatens fish populations in areas such as the Baltic Sea, the North American Great Lakes, and along the U.S. Pacific Coast (read more about this environmental issue here: rconnect.usgs.gov/vanishing-vitamin-app/). Animals obtain thiamine through their diet or from their gut microbiota, but in top predators like salmon, it is unclear how large a role the gut microbiota plays compared with dietary intake. The project will investigate thiamine deficiency through laboratory experiments, field studies, and mathematical models, with the goal of understanding why the deficiency occurs. The project will also involve extensive collaboration with researchers in the United States and Norway. According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.   Requirements A person fulfils the general entry requirements if they: have been awarded a degree on second-cycle level, completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or in another way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge. Postdoctoral Fellow position in wood formation

About the position The Wood Cell Wall Architecture group at the Umeå Plant Science Center is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to identify and characterise novel cellular components that control and coordinate the development of secondary cell walls in growing trees. The project revolves around partially redundant, poorly understood gene families acting in wood formation. Specifically, the successful applicant will drive a multi-target gene-editing screen in Populus to pierce redundancy and reveal secondary cell wall phenotypes, followed by mechanistic characterisation of candidate genes through in situ microscopy/microspectroscopy, cell wall biochemistry and proximity-labelling proteomics. Beyond this core framework, I will provide space and support for the chosen applicant to develop their own research ideas, using new data or lines from a similar screen previously performed in Arabidopsis. Being in a newly set-up group, the chosen applicant will face some additional work in establishing routines, but will in return have considerable influence on the direction of the group’s research. Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare We are recruiting a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work across two synergistic research projects that aim to transform early-life management of piglets in commercial production systems. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to become involved in other ongoing behaviour and welfare research projects. About the position The research with pigs focuses on: Investigating long-term effects of providing piglets with early-life freedom of choice in how and what they forage. This work explores impacts on resilience, cognitive development, behaviour, stress physiology, health, microbiota-related functions, and production outcomes up to slaughter. Setting up a Living Lab to co-develop practical feeding-enrichment solutions with farmers and stakeholders, implementing these strategies on commercial farms, and evaluating piglet welfare, health, microbiota, behavioural, and economic impacts in real-world settings. Together, the projects address a central challenge in commercial pig production: how to enable natural foraging motivations, support gut–brain development, increase stress resilience, and reduce welfare and health problems during and after weaning. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to combine experimental animal welfare research, field-based living lab development, behavioural and physiological data collection, and stakeholder-driven innovation. It also offers the chance to maximise publications by becoming involved in the analysis and writing of scientific papers from other behaviour and welfare projects. Tasks Your main responsibilities will include: Conduct behavioural observations, welfare assessments, cognitive testing (e.g., novel object recognition, problem-solving, attention bias), and stress-physiology sampling in longitudinal studies following piglets from early life until slaughter. Analyse health, production and welfare outcomes (growth, lesions, diarrhoea, tail biting, resilience indicators, BDNF/IGF-1, immune parameters). Help integrate measures of brain plasticity, stress resilience, and affective indicators with behavioural findings. Description: We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral student who wants to explore how microorganisms work together to drive sustainable energy solutions. This project focuses on syntrophic microorganisms, key players in bioenergy technologies such as biogas production and bioelectrochemical systems. Their role becomes especially important under stress conditions, where slow growth and fragile cooperation can limit process performance. When this microbial teamwork fails, organic acids can accumulate after disturbances and reduce system efficiency. Because no single microorganism can perform these reactions alone, strong and well-coordinated interactions between multiple species are essential. As a doctoral student in this project, you will investigate cell communication in these closely interacting microbial communities. By combining advanced anaerobic cultivation techniques with omics-based approaches (metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics), you will uncover the molecular mechanisms that enable microbial cooperation. You will also take part in developing innovative cultivation systems and molecular tools to study these complex interactions. The overall goal of the project is to deepen our understanding of how syntrophic microorganisms communicate and form stable partnerships, and to translate this knowledge into strategies that strengthen microbial processes and increase the production of renewable energy, such as biogas production. Postdoctoral Fellow position in Precision Livestock Farming

About the project This postdoctoral position is part of a newly funded research project aimed at translating sensor‑based health monitoring into operational decision‑support tools for farmers, in close collaboration with an industry partner. The project focuses on automated rumen‑fill assessment using 3D imaging, computer vision, and predictive modelling. The postdoc will further develop an existing rumen‑fill scoring algorithm into a functional prototype and pilot the technology for longitudinal monitoring of individual cows. The work includes designing and conducting an observational animal‑health study, with structured health checks performed together with veterinarians to link rumen‑fill dynamics to feed intake and early signs of disease. Based on these data, predictive models for early health warnings will be developed in collaboration with a statistician. The research is conducted in a multidisciplinary team across several institutions. The position offers substantial autonomy, methodological development, project leadership, and collaboration with both academic and industrial partners. About the position This postdoctoral position offers the opportunity to work with data-driven research at the intersection of AI, computer vision, animal welfare, and behavior. The position is aimed at a method-oriented researcher interested in developing and applying computer vision–based methods in real-world settings. The project is part of the European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare (EUPHAW) and focuses on the development of methods to quantify and analyze behavior and welfare in dairy cattle using large-scale video and sensor data collected in barn environments. Ph.D position in the topic of “Agricultural Water Management”

Description: The research in this doctoral project aims to increase the understanding of the need for drainage for sustainable food production, good soil health and water resource management in agricultural landscapes under changing climate. Today, drainage is a neglected infrastructure in agricultural landscapes despite the fact that 43% of Sweden’s arable land is dependent on these often 100-year-old flow paths for water. With changing precipitation patterns, agriculture faces challenges to develop this infrastructure. We offer an attractive and creative research environment that generates new knowledge about drainage and soil health for climate resilience in cropping systems. This is a 4-year doctoral position, where the doctoral student will include field sampling and modelling of soil physical and hydrological processes in agricultural land. The doctoral project is part of a strategic initiative in the subject “Agricultural Water Management” at the Department of Soil and Environment, linked to ongoing and new initiatives on agricultural “green-blue infrastructure” funded by MISTRA. Postdoctoral Fellow position in anaerobic microbiology

About the position We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher for our research group in anaerobic microbiology, biotechnology, and molecular analyses. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to an increased understanding of tightly integrated syntrophic microorganisms and their nutrient requirements, with the goal of identifying and overcoming biological limitations in biogas production. We are looking for a methodologically strong researcher with an interest in developing and applying innovative cultivation systems for strictly anaerobic microorganisms, combined with advanced bioinformatic analyses to map their occurrence and function in biogas processes. The work includes both experimental studies and data analysis and is carried out in close collaboration with other researchers within the project. The results are expected to contribute to the development of more robust and efficient biogas systems and to support the broader transition toward a sustainable and circular bioeconomy. Your background The position requires a natural science academic degree and a PhD in a relevant field such as microbiology, bioinformatics, or biotechnology. Postdoctoral position in Food Safety: Light-mediated control of STEC (Shiga toxin–producing E. coli )

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop and evaluate blue-light treatment as an additional preventive step to reduce Shiga toxin–producing E. coli (STEC/EHEC) on ready-to-eat leafy vegetables—while safeguarding product quality and shelf-life. About the position This postdoctoral scholarship offers an exciting opportunity to work in a project developing blue-light decontamination of human pathogns in fresh leafy greens and part of the Horticultural Microbiology team, with a focus on (i) inactivation of STEC/EHEC on leaves, (ii) potential regulation of virulence-related factors after sublethal exposure, and (iii) effects of treatment on leaf quality and shelf-life. Your profile PhD in food microbiology, molecular biology or food safety, with documented research expertise in food microbiology/food safety and with experience working with bacterial pathogens relevant to fresh produce (preferably STEC/EHEC or closely related Enterobacteriaceae).
