Postdoctoral in microbial metabolism, diet and cardiometabolic diseases

We are seeking an ambitious and dedicated researcher for a 2-year postdoctoral position in the field of microbial metabolism and experimental animal models for cardiometabolic diseases (CMD). The Postdoc will be part of the Research group for Gut, Microbes and Health at DTU National Food Institute. We investigate how diet and environmental factors in the gut affect the composition and activities of the gut microbiome, and how this, in turn, affects health. The research is furthermore part of the virtual research center Microbiome Health Initiative (MHI), funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, aiming to establish a potential causal link between the gut microbiome and cardiometabolic diseases (CMD). The research project will focus on identifying and characterizing novel biosynthetic pathways for microbially-derived molecules and understanding how microbial molecule production can be modulated for disease prevention and therapeutic benefit. Using a combination of computational approaches and experimental models, the work will investigate how targeted regulation, through diet, of gut microbial functions and microbial metabolites can influence host metabolism. These concepts will be explored and validated across a range of established animal models relevant to metabolic and cardiometabolic diseases. Responsibilities and qualifications As part of the Research Group for Gut, Microbes and Health and the Microbiome Health Initiative, you will collaborate with a diverse group of researchers with expertise across multiple aspects of microbiome research, both within DTU National Food Institute, in Denmark, and with international partners. Thus, we expect you to have a solid background in microbiology and experimental animal models, together with a broad and in-depth understanding of microbial metabolism and the enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of microbially derived molecules. Hands-on experience within vitro testing, microbiological assays, and gut microbiome and metabolome analyses is essential. The ideal candidate is ambitious, highly motivated, and able to work independently, with excellent written and spoken English skills. Experience with animal experimentation for cardiometabolic disease and dietary interventions is required, while experience with sequence-based analysis of bacterial communities and chemical characterization of microbial metabolites (e.g. LC-MS/MS) is considered a strong advantage Required skills and additional responsibilities include: Strong expertise in microbial metabolism and cardiometabolic disease, with experience in computational and in vitro methods for studying host-microbe interactions. Extensive experience in designing, conducting, and analyzing animal experiments using both small and large animal models of cardiometabolic disease. Conduct independent research projects, from initial conception and design through to completion. Communicate research results: presenting data at national and international conferences and meetings, writing reports and manuscripts for publication. Supervise BSc and/or MSc students and potentially PhD projects. Contribute with teaching in educational course(s). Having prior experience with some, or all, of the listed responsibilities will be reviewed favorable. As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). Postdoctoral positions in Advancing Sustainable Yeast-Based Protein Manufacturing

Are you passionate about sustainability and reducing environmental impact in biomanufacturing? Global biomanufacturing is expanding rapidly, but current processes rely heavily on sugar-based feedstocks, which require farmland and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, yeast-based protein production generates heat, demanding significant cooling to maintain productivity. Two post doc position are available, in the area of sustainable recombinant protein manufacturing using the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Postdoc position 1) or Komagataella phaffii (Pichia pastoris) (Postdoc position 2) as host organisms.  You will be part of an exciting academic/industrial collaboration between Professor Uffe Hasbro Mortensen at DTU Bioengineering and the Microbial Expression Engineering Department at Novo Nordisk aiming at expanding the carbon source repertoire and stress tolerance of these the industrially important production yeasts. The candidates will perform their work at department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, DTU, and at the Microbial Expression Engineering Department at Novo Nordisk, Måløv. Responsibilities and qualifications As a postdoc, your primary skills will be: Design and execute experiments to identify key genetic factors for thermotolerance and alternative carbon utilization, including literature analysis, genetic crosses, and mutant library screening. Apply findings to engineer yeast strains with improved traits. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across academia and industry. Publish results in high-impact journals and present at international conferences. Prepare technical reports and project deliverables with high standards of accuracy and clarity. Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects, and be co-supervisor for PhD students We are looking for candidates with: Skills in molecular biology, synthetic biology, yeast genetics, or related fields. Strong knowledge of heterologous protein expression and optimization. Experience with high-throughput screening and genetic-engineering technology is preferred. Postdoctoral in Environmental and dietary causes of nephrocalcinosis in salmonid aquaculture

Responsibilities and qualifications We are seeking a talented and highly motivated researcher to contribute to increasing our understanding of how environmental and dietary factors contribute to the occurrence of nephrocalcinosis in salmonid fish. The successful candidate will conduct research on how dissolved gases, chemical water quality, and dietary mineral content affect urinary chemistry to determine the risk of mineral precipitation in the kidney. Longer term trials will be conducted to verify the occurrence and severity of nephrocalcinosis through performance assessment and mineral speciation (infrared and emission spectroscopy), pathological (histology), and functional (gene expression profiling) kidney damage. Position of PhD Fellowship for the Sustainable fat-rich feedstuffs in dairy cow diets: effects on enteric methane emission, digestibility, milk production and milk composition

Title: Sustainable fat-rich feedstuffs in dairy cow diets: effects on enteric methane emission, digestibility, milk production and milk composition Research area and project description: We are seeking a dedicated PhD student with a background in animal, veterinary or biological sciences for a 3-year position on the use of sustainably sourced fat-rich feedstuffs in rations for high-yielding dairy cows. Our focus is on fat supplementation as a methane mitigation strategy, effects of different fat sources on rumen digestion as well as the combination of fat with other strategies to reduce enteric methane as well as emissions from barn and storage. Fat supplementation has for many years been a strategy to increase the energy density of the diet and hence improve milk production. Further, it is a well-documented strategy to reduce enteric methane in dairy cows. While palm fat-based products are commonly used and easy to handle, the sustainability agenda calls for more sustainably sourced alternatives, which, however, should not have a negative effect on fibre degradation or milk composition. Alternative fat supplements with more sustainable sourcing and treatments to limit rumen biohydrogenation are in focus in this project. The PhD student will study different fat supplements used as feed for dairy cows using intensive animal trials with multi-fistulated dairy cows and production trials. Expected contents of the project are: In-vivo rumen degradation and biohydrogenation of different fat sources and the effect on nutrient digestibility. Novel fat sources are being developed at an earlier stage of the project. Feed intake, milk response and production traits of selected fat supplements fed to high-yielding dairy cows Combination of fat supplementation with methane-reducing feed additives and different forages The project is performed in collaboration with the feed and dairy industries.
