More concretely your work package, as a Postdoctoral researcher in evolutionary genomics of sex chromosomes and sex-specific recombination in anurans and for the validation of your doctoral research and, contains: A postdoctoral position is available in the Ma lab: Evolutionary Genomics of Sex (https://www.wmalab.com) in the Biology Department at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). Our lab aims to understand how sex chromosomes and sex determination systems evolve, why they are highly labile in some lineages but extremely stable in others, and how recombination shapes these dynamics across the tree of life. You will work on a project focused on sex chromosomes and extreme heterochiasmy across anuran lineages, with a particular emphasis on: assembling and analysing large, repeat-rich frog genomes; performing comparative genomics across lineages with different sex-determining systems (XY, ZW, homomorphic vs differentiated sex chromosomes); investigating the drivers of sex chromosome turnover, transposable elements and repeats landscape and evolution; studying the evolution of sex-specific recombination rates and landscapes. The project will involve field sampling and basic molecular lab work, and will combine long-read genome assembly, comparative and population genomics, and the analysis of recombination patterns and structural variation. Depending on the candidate’s interests and expertise, there will also be opportunities to integrate cytogenetics and/or evo-devo approaches, as appropriate to the project’s goals. For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will serve as your home base. 3 – Profile What do we expect from you? You hold a PhD in evolutionary biology, genomics, bioinformatics, or a closely related field. You have a solid expertise in evolutionary/population genomics and molecular evolution, with clear interest in sex chromosomes/sex determination, recombination (heterochiasmy), transposable elements evolution, or genome evolution in non-model species; You have a proven experience analysing high-throughput sequencing data, ideally including genome assembly and/or comparative genomics (large or repeat-rich genomes are a plus); You have strong programming and data analysis skills (e.g. Python and/or R, Unix), and you are familiar with reproducible workflows; You are motivated to work on frog genomes to understand sex chromosome turnover and the evolution of recombination landscapes, and to link genomic patterns to evolutionary mechanisms; Your experience in prior fieldwork is preferred; You have a valid EU driving licence (or equivalent); You are willing to contribute to ongoing projects, co-supervise MSc/BSc students, and (optionally) be involved in a small amount of teaching. You stayed abroad for at least 12 months of the 3 years preceding the start date, and during this period you did not work or study in Belgium. PhD scholarship on Wheat Drought Tolerance: Integrated Phenomics–Genomics Approaches

About the position The Department of Plant Science, Faculty of Biosciences at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year PhD–position related to integrated phenomics–genomics framework for drought tolerance in wheat. We invite applications for a fully funded PhD position focusing on the development and validation of an integrated phenomics–genomics framework to identify novel root architecture and physio-morphological traits conferring pre-anthesis drought tolerance in wheat. The project is embedded within the SmartWheat project at NMBU, which aims to deliver breeding solutions to climate-induced drought stress threatening wheat production in Norway and northern Europe, using advanced phenotyping, imaging technologies, AI-based analyses, and digital twins. The PhD candidate will work on spring wheat genotypes adapted to Norwegian and northern European growing conditions, combining controlled polytunnel experiments, open-field trials, and root phenotyping. A research stay abroad at Wageningen University (The Netherlands) or Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (Germany) is planned for this position. Main tasks The overarching goal is to support the breeding of climate-resilient wheat varieties by identifying drought-adaptive traits and translating them into breeding-relevant tools. Specifically, the PhD project will: Quantify drought effects on plant physiology, morphology, phenology, and yield stability under pre-anthesis drought stress using conventional measurements and sensing technologies Assess canopy temperature and reflectance using thermal, multispectral, and hyperspectral imaging in tunnels and field conditions Characterize root system architecture (RSA) using high-throughput, non-destructive phenotyping methods (e.g. X-ray CT, rhizotron imaging) to identify adaptive traits for drought. Linking root traits to physiological indicators of drought tolerance Identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) and candidate genes associated with drought-adaptive traits through genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Develop and validate non-invasive drought phenotyping protocols relevant for breeding programs Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to open-access datasets and protocols The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period. Research topic The successful candidate will be affiliated with the newly EU funded project Hazard Assessment of Marine Mixtures and New Pollutant Synergies, HARMONY (Horizon Europe call HORIZON-CL6-2025-01), an interdisciplinary research project grounded in a One Health perspective, investigating the cumulative effects of complex mixtures of marine environmental contaminants on organisms, ecosystems, and human health, including interactions with climate-related stressors such as rising temperature and ocean acidification. The project integrates chemical analyses, biological effect studies, and laboratory experiments with the development of AI-based models to map bioaccumulation, mechanisms of toxicity, and combined risk profiles across biological levels. Through this holistic approach, the project aims to strengthen the knowledge base for risk assessment and sustainable marine management, and to contribute to the implementation of the EU Green Deal, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and international One Health strategies. Qualification & experience should be in relevant discipline/field and from an Institution of repute. Experience should have been gained after acquiring the minimum essential qualification. Mere fulfilling the essential qualification does not guarantee the selection. Persons already in regular time scale service under any Government Department / Organizations are not eligible to apply. The eligible candidates will be called for personal discussion virtually/ physically to SLS, JNU on the date and time which will be announced later on. No TA/DA will be paid to attend interview / personal discussion and candidates have to arrange transport/accommodation themselves.
