Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in biomaterials with a focus on infection microbiology

The Institute of Clinical Sciences is one of six Institutes within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. We conduct research and education that puts people’s health and quality of life in focus. We represent 16 different research areas and are divided into four sections. Through a fruitful collaboration with the healthcare and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we have developed joint projects and meeting places that benefits both health care and research. The position as Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) is placed at the Department of Biomaterials, which has an internationally leading position in the field of tissue integration of implants and prostheses. Knowledge of the mechanisms of tissue integration and failure due to infection is important for the clinical translation of new antimicrobial medical devices and treatment strategies. Research takes place in collaborative projects with Swedish and international universities and companies. The department carries out several projects in collaboration with clinical colleagues and material experts. Examples of these are studies of mechanisms for implant-associated infection and biofilms, host-bacteria-material interactions, as well as clinical studies on orthopaedic device-related infections (Sahlgrenska University Hospital). With this announcement, we wish to recruit an Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) who can broaden biomaterials research towards medical and molecular microbiology and contribute to the further development of research and education within the subject as a whole, as well as interact with the surrounding society. Currently, several projects on the topic of biomaterial-associated infection, medical biofilms, and antibiotic resistance are funded by regional, national and international grants. Subject area Biomaterials with a focus on infection microbiology Subject area description Biomaterials science is a multidisciplinary research subject with focus on the interaction between materials and biology. The subject combines knowledge of the material properties with the tissue’s cellular and molecular processes, morphological and biomechanical aspects under normal and pathological conditions, as well as the pathogenesis of infection and its prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The focus is on curiosity-driven basic research with clinical applications, and includes both preclinical and clinical studies. Implant-related infection is one of the worst complications, the prevalence of which is increasing due to the aging population, and representing more than half of all hospital-acquired infections. The subject of the employment focus on understanding of how microorganisms form biofilms on medical devices and cause biomaterial-related infections, how biofilm-related antimicrobial resistance causes treatment failure, and how biomaterial-related infections can be prevented, diagnosed or treated. Research at the Department of Biomaterials is primarily focused on materials used in the musculoskeletal system and includes, among other things, clinical applications within orthopedic implants and hearing implants, oral and craniofacial reconstruction, as well as biomaterial-related infections, pathogenic microorganisms, biofilms and antibiotic resistance. Duties The position includes conducting research in biomaterials science with a focus on infection microbiology at a nationally and internationally competitive level, and the Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) will apply for national and/or international research funding. The position holder will play a leading role in planning and conducting clinical, preclinical, and basic research in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. The position includes teaching at the advanced level, including relevant courses such as the elective course on regenerative medicine for Term 11, and postgraduate courses related to biomaterials science and scientific communication. The role also involves supervision of doctoral students. Teaching will be conducted in English. The position also includes administrative duties related to teaching and research, as well as collaboration with the surrounding community. The position involves extensive national and international collaboration with researchers and societal actors, including the medical device industry. The employee who lacks higher education pedagogy training must complete such training within one year of taking up the position. For promotion, the applicant must have acquired the ability to master Swedish in writing and speaking at least level B2 according to GERS no later than six months before the end of the Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) position. However, a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical Neuroscience, Health and Rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology and Psychiatry and Neurochemistry. The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher employment at the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry. The Neurochemistry laboratory, at the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, conducts neurochemical medical research targeted to understand the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease and other brain disorders. An important goal is to identify protein changes linked to the pathophysiology of human diseases, known as biomarkers, which can be valuable to explore disease mechanisms, for diagnosis, and to monitor treatment effects in man. The Neurochemistry laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research on the development as well as both clinical and neurochemical validation of methods for measuring the neurofilament alpha-internexin (AINX) in body fluids. Subject area Neurochemistry with a specialisation in Biomarkers Subject area description Neurodegenerative diseases, particularly dementias, are becoming increasingly prevalent as the population ages. Current cognitive tests used in dementia diagnostics are often too blunt to detect mild cognitive impairment or to differentiate between various neurodegenerative disorders. While established cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and more recently blood-based, biomarkers exist for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and are routinely used in diagnostics, such markers are still lacking for other conditions, including frontotemporal dementia (FTD).  Thus, we need new markers that reflect different disease mechanisms in order to facilitate early and reliable diagnosis. Job assignments The employment is connected to a project aimed at developing new immunochemical methods for quantifying the neurofilament AINX in body fluids, as well as further investigating this protein in neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and frontotemporal dementia. The responsibilities include validating and evaluating new analytical methods, as well as conducting clinical neurochemical studies. The analytical methods include various immunochemical platforms, such as Simoa, MSD, and Nulisa. The role also involves administrative tasks related to the projects, such as compiling and reporting data. Eligibility The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. Knowledge and experience in protein chemical analyses and the development of new immunochemical methods on the Simoa, MSD, and Nulisa platforms are considered merits. Furthermore, experience with antibody characterization, for example through immunoprecipitation, is also advantageous. Project description: The research at the department of Oral Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Gothenburg, include oral microbes and the cells belonging to the innate immunity, especially neutrophils, and how this parts interacts both at healthy conditions and in oral diseases. The purpose of the PhD-project is to investigate how the microbial metabolite indole affect neutrophil viability and functions. Some oral microbes associated with oral diseases, like periodontitis and peri-implantitis, produce indole as a part of their metabolism. Indole and indole derivatives seem to affect some of the defense mechanisms used by neutrophils to kill of microbes and it is therefore important to study this further and investigate how the immune defense is affected by indole and also to examine the extent of indole production in oral diseases. Within this project, the microbial metabolite indole and how it affects neutrophils from healthy individuals will be studied in vitro and clinical samples from patients with periodontitis and peri-implantitis will be investigated with regards to indole content. In addition, a chair-side test will be developed to ease sampling and analysis of indole at the clinic. Experience from laboratory work is a merit and previous experience working with innate immune cells and microorganisms is advantageous. The applicant should be meticulous and responsible with a capacity for unsupervised problem-solving. Personal suitability is highly valued. MIND, Microbial & Data-Driven Food Innovation Hub, is being established as a national competence platform. The platform is hosted at Chalmers, in close collaboration with RISE and multiple industry partners, to develop and utilize well-characterized microbial and digital resources for next-generation food and circular bio-based applications. In this postdoctoral position, you will contribute to building MIND’s biological and digital core by integrating microbial genomics, functional characterization, fermentation science, and predictive data analysis. RNA interference (RNAi) is a critical biological process that regulates gene expression and maintains cellular homeostasis. Disruptions in RNAi pathways are linked to various diseases. The RNAi machinery primarily involves Argonaute (AGO) proteins and microRNAs (miRNAs), which bind to messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to mRNA degradation and gene silencing. While the cytoplasmic RNAi mechanisms are well-characterized, recent findings highlight that RNAi also operates within the cell nucleus. In the nucleus, AGO2 plays essential roles during early development but is typically excluded from the nucleus in mature, healthy cells. However, mislocalization of AGO2 to the nucleus has been observed during viral infections, cancer, and aging, often correlated with poor disease progression. These findings identify astrocytes as a major factor in the maintenance of brain health and a central element in many neurological diseases, making them a novel therapeutic target. We and others previously demonstrated that reactive gliosis, while beneficial in many neurological conditions, can in some disease contexts become maladaptive, with severe consequences for the CNS function. We hypothesize that the maladaptive response of reactive astrocytes is the driver of some neurodegenerative disorders. The project aims to address cellular and molecular mechanisms of astrocyte malfunction and provide the basis for designing future treatment strategies for neurodegenerative conditions involving maladaptive astrocyte reactivity. The student will use mouse disease models, perform behavioral assessment of sensorimotor functions, and apply state-of-the-art tissue and omics analyses. Taking advantage of a strong collaborative network of national and international experts, this PhD project will contribute to the understanding of the role of astrocytes in selected CNS diseases, and has the potential to accelerate the development of new treatments to improve outcome. Subject area Postdoctoral fellow in development of peptidomimetic compounds for antivirulence therapy Subject area description This position focuses on antivirulence drug discovery targeting Sortase A (SrtA) in Staphylococcus species. The postdoc will drive the design and synthesis of peptidomimetic inhibitor libraries (solid-phase peptide synthesis, solution-phase organic chemistry, late-stage diversification) and establish structure–activity relationships. The role includes developing and running biochemical assays and cell-based functional assays, early adhesion, biofilm formation, and growth/viability using pathogenic strains under BSL-2. The project integrates biophysical/analytical characterization (HPLC/MS, purity, stability), selectivity profiling versus related enzymes, and mechanistic studies. In collaboration with microbiology partners, the postdoc will contribute to in vivo evaluations in relevant infection models and support PK/PD translation and combination testing with standard antibiotics. PhD position in mRNA translation and resistance to endocrine therapy

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research? To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required. The research group The Department of Oncology-Pathology is searching for a PhD student to work with Dr Ola Larsson to study the role of mRNA translation in resistance to endocrine therapy in breast cancer. More detail about the group can be found at the group webpage. The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student 70-80% of breast cancer patients express estrogen receptor alpha (ER), a target for endocrine therapy, and show recurrence for >20 years. Upon recurrence, which leads to death, patients are resistant to endocrine therapy. Mechanisms underlying such resistance were largely elusive until mutations in the ER gene (ESR1) were discovered in a proportion of recurring patients. Regulation of gene expression via selective changes in mRNA translation may at least partly underlie such ESR1-dependent and/or independent endocrine therapy resistance. The goal of the doctoral project is to understand if, to what extent and how selective changes in mRNA translation leads to resistance to endocrine therapy. This may point towards new therapies. The project includes ample laboratory work applying molecular biology approaches. In addition, the project will generate large data sets whose analysis requires the student to apply statistical, bioinformatics and systems biology approaches to understand how mRNA translation is selectively modulated. Therefore, students with undergraduate studies including bioinformatics/biostatistics with an interest to also perform wet lab studies; or students with undergraduate studies in e.g. molecular biology or biomedicine with a strong interest in statistics and analyses of large data sets are best suited for this educational project.  The PhD student will perform experiments, analyze complex experimental data, interpret and present results and participate in the writing of scientific papers. B) Specific eligibility requirement You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you: – Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school. Skills and personal qualities Applications are welcome from talented students with degrees in biostatistics, bioinformatics or equivalent with documented experience in molecular biology; or students with degrees in molecular biology or biomedicine with a strong interest in statistics and analyses of large data sets. An understanding of mRNA translation and/or cancer biology is an advantage. We are seeking a highly motivated and creative person. The candidate should have good communication skills and ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. Excellent ability to express themselves in speech and writing in English is a requirement. A suitable candidate should possess good analytical skills and an ability of critical and independent thinking During interviews the analytical skills, ability to critical and independent thinking as well as personal qualities will be evaluated. Terms and conditions The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
