This position is designed as an entry-level, post-baccalaureate training role for individuals preparing for graduate study or advanced research careers. The Junior Specialist will contribute to laboratory operations, protocol development, reagent preparation, and coordination activities that support both on-campus instructional laboratories and a distributed national research network. The role includes structured mentoring, professional development, and opportunities to contribute to publications and conference presentations. Research and Program Operations (75%) The Junior Specialist will support and participate in laboratory and research activities that enable standardized protein engineering workflows across the D2D/SPRINT network. Primary responsibilities include: · Perform molecular biology reagent preparation and support mutagenesis workflows; assist in evaluating and piloting alternative cloning and assembly strategies (e.g., Golden Gate Assembly and related methods) suitable for use by undergraduates and novice faculty in the D2D Network. Prepare, aliquot, quality-control, and document additional research-grade reagents used in protein production and purification, and enzyme assay workflows. · Maintain D2D laboratory readiness, including preparing and maintain stock reagents/consumables, ordering, inventory tracking, and general lab organization, ensuring the D2D laboratory at UC Davis Genome Center serves as a reliable pilot site for national D2D implementation. · Serve as a primary contributor to network protocol documentation, including drafting, revising, and improving procedures in the D2D laboratory manual (100+ pages), incorporating feedback from instructors, students, and partner institutions. · Support validation and testing of new workflows, enzyme systems, or instructional modules prior to network-wide deployment by assisting graduate students developing new methods for the project, acting as an assistant and trainee while building independent technical and organizational skills. · Coordinate and execute shipment of biological materials (e.g., ssDNA, cells, reagents) to collaborators, maintaining detailed shipment records and compliance with institutional and carrier requirements. · Assist with the coordination and tracking of vendor/network support awards, including ordering supplies/small equipment and ensuring delivery to partner institutions. Teaching, Mentoring, and Coordination (10%) The Junior Specialist will contribute to instructional and mentoring activities under supervision, gaining experience in research leadership and coordination. Responsibilities include: · Support on-campus instructional laboratories participating in D2D/SPRINT, including BIS150 (incoming transfer students) by preparing weekly lab materials and ensuring instructors and TAs have required resources. · Assist with in-class or pre-class laboratory setup as needed to support course delivery. · In later phases of the appointment, assist with coordination of a small undergraduate student team, initially in a co-supervisor or co-pilot role under close mentorship. · Participate in laboratory meetings, planning discussions, and program coordination activities. Conduct research aimed understanding muscle remodeling in DMD muscle tissue before and after dystrophin replacement AAV gene therapy or other investigational treatments, including preparing samples for single cell/nuclei sequencing and coordinating sample tracking across group members for sequencing and interpretation. Design and carry out FACS based experiment aimed at characterizing primary or expanded and stimulated muscle mononuclear cells including fibroblast, satellite cell, lymphocytes, myeloid and endothelial cell populations. Project While barley remains the dominant raw material in global brewing, increasing climate pressure and supply volatility demand more resilient and sustainable alternatives. Thus, we are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join an interdisciplinary research project aiming to assess the technological feasibility, processability, and sensory impact of alternative grains when used as malted and unmalted ingredients in both conventional and non-alcoholic beer production taking into account sustainability aspects. The project combines laboratory-scale experimentation, pilot-scale validation, advanced analytical chemistry (various GC, LC, and MS systems), brewing trials, and sensory science with the aim of generating a systematic, comparative dataset linking grain type, malting behaviour, roasting intensity, brewing performance, and sensory quality. Position of PhD scholarship within Environmental Sciences/Chemistry – Soil, Plants, Animals and PFAS

About the position Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year PhD position in soil science. The PhD candidate will be connected to the project “VIRTUE – A Virtuous Cycle of Phytoremediation, Pyrolysis and Biochar Applications towards Safe PFAS Levels in Soil, Feed and Food” (funded by the Research Council of Norway). PFAS, often called “forever chemicals”, are among the most persistent pollutants of our time. Found in soil, water, animals, and humans, these substances pose a serious environmental and health challenge. In Norwegian sewage sludge, concentrations have been measured up to 4,000 times above the soil toxicity threshold. The project goal is to develop a circular, nature-based method for removing PFAS from soil, water, and food systems. We combine three innovative steps: Phytoremediation: Plants absorb soluble PFAS from contaminated soil. Pyrolysis: The harvested biomass is burnt without oxygen in a controlled process that destroys PFAS compounds. Biochar application: The resulting clean biochar is returned to the soil to bind remaining PFAS so strongly that it cannot be taken up in plants and animals. The project connects soil science, food safety, and public health to deliver a scalable solution for one of the world’s most urgent pollution problems. About the position The Department of Plant Sciences, Faculty of Biosciences at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant three-year PhD–position related to crop physiology and breeding. The main goal for the PhD project is to help elucidate the environmental and genetic control of maturation in faba bean under Norwegian growing conditions. Faba bean has gained increased interest from farmers in later years. Being a grain legume, it fixes nitrogen through its symbiosis with N-fixing bacteria. Thus, it needs little fertilizer, leaves N in the soil for the next crop in the rotation, and has a very high grain protein content. Cultivation of faba bean is therefore of high value in a sustainable food system. Faba bean originates from more southern latitudes and adaptation to our northern climate is necessary to utilise its full potential. In particular, the late maturation of the crop can be a problem in some years and should be improved. While there is some knowledge on environmental and genetic regulation of flowering time, much less is known about the regulation of maturation, particularly under Nordic conditions. We aim at 1) characterising the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, photoperiod and water availability on maturation-related traits, 2) characterising the genetic variation, heritability, genotype-environment interactions and correlation among these traits, and 3) identifying genetic markers and developing genomic prediction models for maturation-related traits. The successful PhD candidate will be heavily involved in this work, which is associated with the projects ProMax, Future Protein Crops and Fabanova, all partly aimed at developing faba bean for the Nordic climate.
