Advanced Therapeutics Postdoctoral Research Associate (CAR-T)

The Opportunity: We are looking to employ a postdoctoral researcher on a 36-month contract to join the research group of Professor Susan Rosser, chair of synthetic biology at the University of Edinburgh Centre for Engineering Biology to work on development of gene switches for use in gene therapy. The selected researcher will join an internationally recognised, friendly, diverse, inclusive and enthusiastic team.  You will become part of the Engineered Genetic Control Systems for Advanced Therapeutics Hub (https://biology.ed.ac.uk/advanced-therapeutics-hub ). The hub, Directed by Prof Rosser, is a £14M 5-year UKRI sponsored research program across 4 institutions (Edinburgh, Oxford, Imperial, CRUK SI) pioneering engineering biology for advanced therapeutics. It is developing novel genetic tools to render gene therapies safe and effective, with initial focus on oncology, cardiovascular diseases and rare diseases. This specific role focuses on engineering CAR-T cells and developing programmable gene control systems to improve safety and therapeutic efficacy. The successful candidate will design, build, and experimentally evaluate synthetic genetic circuits in human T cells, integrate them into CAR-T cell therapies, and quantitatively characterise cellular behaviour in relevant experimental models. The postholder will help shape experimental strategy, interpret complex datasets, and contribute to collaborative projects and publications. This role combines molecular biology, mammalian cell engineering, and synthetic immunology to advance programmable gene regulation technologies in engineered immune cells. Research Assistant/Associate

About the role We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to join Zoltán Takáts’ team in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction in the Faculty of Medicine. This position is part of a cutting-edge research programme focused on the development of molecularly aware cancer treatment, with particular emphasis on in-vivo cancer margin detection and ex-vivo imaging using multi-omics and ambient ionisation mass spectrometry technologies. You will lead the optimisation and application of mass spectrometry imaging and ambient ionisation workflows, encompassing sample preparation, data acquisition, instrument management, and biological interpretation. The project aims to establish clinically actionable biomarkers used for cancer phenotyping and margin detection. These will be translated into more clinically useful algorithms for use with microrobots being developed as part of the project for first in human deployment, in close collaboration with pathologists, engineers, data scientists, and analytical chemists. What you would be doing In this role, you will: Optimise and develop ambient ionisation mass spectrometry methods (including DESI and REIMS) for analysis of clinical samples. Contribute to the development and optimisation of mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) workflows for tissue analysis. Maintain and troubleshoot mass spectrometry instrumentation and associated hardware. Support the development of clinically relevant biomarker panels through high-quality data generation and interpretation. Prepare findings for publication and present results at scientific meetings. Work closely with a multidisciplinary team to integrate metabolomic insights into a broader cancer biology framework. What we are looking for A PhD (or equivalent) in Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related field. Hands-on experience in mass spectrometry-based analysis of clinical samples. Experience with ambient ionisation mass spectrometry techniques such as DESI and  REIMS. Practical experience using MS instrumentation, particularly Waters systems. Experience with mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) Demonstrated experience in developing and optimising and applying ambient ionisation mass spectrometry techniques on a range of samples Experience with multivariate statistical methods and data interpretation. Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset. The ability to work independently, work based on SOPs and manage complex experimental workflows. Tissue Bank Technician

About the role Applications are welcomed for the post of Tissue Bank Technician for the Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease Tissue Bank, in the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London.  The post is jointly funded by the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Parkinson’s UK who have provided funding to facilitate the collection and preservation of human central nervous tissue for research into the causes and the treatment of multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. What you would be doing  This post will involve the successful candidate working closely with the Tissue Bank Manager and Directors, the neuropathologists and other research technicians to collect, preserve, characterise and supply tissue samples of the highest quality to researchers studying multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions. The work of the team of research technicians is essential to the ability of the MS and PD Tissue Bank to fulfil its main aim and to realise its ultimate goal of helping to find a cure for multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. The Tissue Bank Technician will assist in the collection and processing of donated human tissues samples from hospitals around the UK as directed by the Tissue Bank Manager and Coordinators.  You will assist in the preparation of tissue sections for routine neuropathological examination, distribution of tissue sections to scientists and with the dissection and preservation of material.  The role will require you to work out of hours, as part of the on-call rota system in place. You will be responsible for general laboratory and other duties: preparing the laboratory and necessary documentation for the dissection and the capture of images. There are two posts available, with the hope that one candidate will have a focus on histological techniques, and the other to have a focus on tissue culturing. Postholder’s will still be expected to undertake training in all relevant areas of the tissue bank technician role What we are looking for The post holders will have a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related field, or similar relevant equivalent experience in laboratory management. Detailed knowledge of dissecting and preserving CNS tissue both, Paraffin and Frozen, are essential. Excellent laboratory, organisational, skills, attention to detail and a flexible approach to working patterns are highly desirable. Experience in tissue cell culturing techniques is also highly desirable.
