Job description This is full time, fixed term role. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Cramer Lab for a prestigious project funded by the Royal Society’s Paul Instrument Fund. This is a unique opportunity to lead the development of a next-generation ion source for native mass spectrometry (MS) using Liquid AP (LAP)-MALDI. The Role Building on our established success with UV-based LAP-MALDI, this project aims to revolutionize native-like analysis by exploiting the natural infrared (IR) absorption of aqueous systems. Your work will focus on the setup, optimization, and application of a novel IR laser-based LAP-MALDI source. You will be working with a dedicated Q-TOF mass spectrometer (under full service contract) to analyze a diverse range of biomolecular analytes, including peptides, proteins, and protein conjugates. PhD – The effect of preweaning milk replacer intake on growth, rumen development and long-term productivity of dairy calves, including economic and environmental cost benefit analysis.

Project Description We are inviting applications for a fully funded cross-disciplinary industrial partnership project. Successful candidates will work with researchers in animal nutrition and veterinary medicine and a leading animal nutrition company (Volac Milk Replacers). Calves fed higher milk replacer rations during the preweaning period have been shown to have: ·      Greater disease resistance ·      Better growth rates to weaning These benefits (higher growth rates), obtained before weaning, result in improved production (increased milk yield) and improved efficiency (reduced time to first calving). Feeding higher volumes of milk replacer pre-weaning could therefore be a successful strategy to meet industry average daily gain targets for Holstein dairy calves of 0.7 to 0.8 kg per day which are currently not met on many farms. Meeting growth rate targets in replacement heifer calves will have long-term benefits for farm profitability and sustainability, and improved efficiency will lead to lower carbon footprint per litre of milk. It remains to be determined if there is a long-term welfare, economic, and production benefit to feeding calves sufficient milk volume to exceed industry target weaning weight. Despite existing published literature, critical knowledge gaps remain: 1.      Are calves fed a higher volume of milk replacer solids more likely to be healthier in the preweaning period? 2.      Are calves fed a higher volume of milk replacer solids more likely to exceed ADG targets of 0.7 to 0.8 kg per day? 3.      What is the impact of increased milk replacer volume on starter intake and rumen development at weaning? 4.      Are calves fed a higher volume of milk replacer solids more likely to be more productive in terms of earlier conception and higher milk production in first lactation? 5.      Using life cycle analysis, what are the cost benefits in terms of economics and environmental impacts of feeding a higher volume of milk solids on milk production? The candidate will benefit from working with an interdisciplinary team and will gain training and skills from a wide range of expertise provided by the supervisors. Animal handling will include monitoring of health scores, bodyweights, fertility and production parameters. The student will gain experience in collecting farm field data, as well as laboratory experience and data analysis skills. The team have extensive experience with academic and industry led extension messaging and knowledge exchange events with farmers and veterinarians. The student would be actively encouraged to participate in knowledge exchange meetings with these groups both with the university and with Volac Milk Replacers. Additionally, they will contribute to publications and enhance communication through workshops, public engagement and conferences. PhD – Combination treatment with advanced therapies and enteral nutrition in children with active Crohn’s disease

Project description Crohn’s disease is an incurable inflammatory condition of the gut associated with high morbidity, poor quality of life and significant healthcare costs. The current treatment options for Crohn’s disease include nutrition and immunosuppressant drug-based therapies. Up to 60% of patients will initially respond to these therapies; however around 20% of them will lose response every subsequent year. Hence, there is a need to develop novel combination and andjuct therapies for more effective and long-lasting disease control. Within a multicentre clinical trial, the PhD student will test nutritional therapies as an adjuvant to biological drug therapies to optimise treatment effectiveness, reduce disease activity and improve inflammatory markers in children with active Crohn’s disease. This PhD will also explore the effect of this novel combination therapy approach on host immune responses and the mediating role of habitual diet. This project may lead to the development of new, more potent and personalised, dietary therapies for children with Crohn’s disease. This PhD opportunity is a collaboration between academics in the University of Glasgow, clinicians from 6 children hospitals across Scotland and Nestle Health Sciences, a major industrial partner specialised in the production of proprietary nutritional therapies for the management of Crohn’s Disease. The student will be working in collaboration with another laboratory PhD student who will focus on the role of the gut microbiome in predicting responses to nutrition and drug-based therapies. The two students will be working in parallel, each with distinct individual objectives. PhD – How Gingival Inflammation Drives Systemic Inflammation: Decoding the Clues in Blood Cells using INVADEseq

Project Description Periodontitis is one of the most common chronic inflammatory diseases worldwide and is increasingly associated with a range of serious systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, Alzheimer’s disease, respiratory disorders, and certain cancers. While these associations are well established, the biological mechanisms linking oral disease to systemic illness remain poorly understood. A leading hypothesis is that bacteria from the dysbiotic periodontal microbiome, or immune cells altered by exposure to these bacteria, enter the bloodstream and travel to distant tissues, driving chronic inflammation. Previous work has identified periodontal pathogens, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, associated with circulating immune cells, suggesting that specific immune cell populations may act as “carriers” transporting oral bacteria throughout the body. These cells have also been detected within atherosclerotic plaques, highlighting a potential role in cardiovascular disease progression. This PhD project will use state-of-the-art single-cell sequencing technologies to investigate how oral bacteria interact with circulating immune cells and influence their behaviour, providing new insight into the links between periodontitis and systemic disease. This PhD opportunity is a collaboration between the University of Glasgow Dental School and Industry Partners from Haleon, a multinational consumer healthcare company, whose purpose is to deliver better everyday health. Cover crops are often used ahead of sugar beet, but a lack of evidence about the nitrogen they provide and the factors that affect it means very few growers adapt their nitrogen application rates after using a cover crop, potentially missing out on savings of £30-70 ha. Some species immobilise nitrogen and suppress beet growth; others create a “green bridge” for virus-carrying aphids during the critical establishment period. This PhD will deliver the first evidence-based framework for integrating cover crops profitably into UK sugar beet rotations, with the potential to unlock £3–7 million per year in industry-wide fertiliser savings. Funded jointly by BBRO, the Morley Agricultural Foundation, and the Lugden Hill Trust, this is an applied, industry-facing project: you will work closely with BBRO and the grower community throughout, ensuring research questions are grounded in real farming challenges and that outputs reach the people who need them. What You Will Do Working across agronomy, soil science, and microbial ecology, you will: Run controlled decomposition experiments to quantify N, P, and K release from key cover crop species (cereals, brassicas, legumes, and mixtures) under UK conditions. Establish multi-year field trials on contrasting soils at commercial BBRO sites and the University of Nottingham farm, measuring beet yield, sugar content, and pest/disease incidence. Analyse soil microbial communities (PLFA, 16S/ITS sequencing) to understand how residues drive nutrient cycling and soil health. Parameterise predictive models and translate outputs into practical grower tools, including a fertiliser credit calculator and species selection guide.
