Postdoctoral position in environmental DNA and citizen science mapping of mosquitoes in Denmark

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoc position at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Research area and project descriptionAnthropogenic changes such as climate and land use change influence the emergence and risk of vector-borne diseases, which are transmitted to humans and animals via blood-feeding insects. As Denmark accelerates its green transition to address biodiversity loss and climate adaptation, they may create favorable conditions for these disease‑transmitting organisms (vectors), such as mosquitoes, and thereby unintentionally increase vector‑borne disease risks. As part of a new interdisciplinary research project, to investigate the relationship between on-going land use changes (as part of Denmark’s Green tripartite) and the effect on mosquito populations in Denmark, we are seeking a highly motivated postdoc to work with environmental DNA (eDNA)-based mapping of mosquitoes in Denmark. The project will use eDNA metabarcoding analyses of water samples collected (through citizen science and other participatory science approaches) across different landscape types to map mosquito species diversity in Denmark and to evaluate eDNA as a tool for mosquito surveillance. For comparison with eDNA methods, traditional mosquito trapping and molecular species identification will be performed at selected sites. There will also be opportunities for developing own research ideas related to eDNA and vector borne diseases in collaboration with the group. The position is available from October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is for 2 years and will be one of two postdoc positions (the other postdoc will have a background in social science) in the newly started interdisciplinary project funded by the UCPH Convergence Grants. Project partners are Natural History Museum of Denmark and Department of Food and Resource Economics. The two postdocs are expected to work closely together in the project. You will join an innovative and interdisciplinary research project, where your key responsibilities specifically will include: Perform eDNA metabarcoding laboratory analysis and analyze high-throughput sequencing data (metabarcoding) to map mosquito diversity and distribution. Collection of mosquitoes and eDNA samples across selected sites in Denmark. Interdisciplinary collaboration with the Natural History Museum of Denmark and Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO) on stakeholder engagement. Qualifications and competencesApplicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent or have submitted their PhD thesis for assessment before the application deadline. We seek a candidate with eDNA and/or metabarcoding experience and with an interest in participatory science methods, such as citizen science. Required qualifications PhD in molecular biology/ecology, environmental sciences, or a closely related field. Demonstrated experience with DNA laboratory work (preferably eDNA metabarcoding). Skills in bioinformatics and statistical analyses of next-generation sequencing data (particularly metabarcoding). Experience with field work (preferably eDNA sampling) and a drivers’ license. Collaborative, communicative, and motivated to work in an interdisciplinary research environment. Preferred qualifications Knowledge of vector ecology, mosquitoes or disease ecology.   Experience with citizen science or public engagement. Job Description This project will investigate the therapeutic potential of Urocortin II (UCN2), a peptide hormone that signals through the CRHR2 receptor, to preserve muscle mass and function in disease and pharmacological weight-loss contexts. Your tasks would include designing and executing in vivo studies in models of diabetic myopathy and diet-induced obesity, performing comprehensive metabolic and skeletal muscle phenotyping, processing samples for transcriptomic profiling, conducting bioinformatic analyses of omics-based datasets, and preparing scientific manuscripts and presenting findings at national and international conferences. The fellowship will provide advanced training in translational metabolic physiology, pharmacological target validation, and multi-omics integration. Job Description We strive to uncover novel digital biomarkers of glucose homeostasis by leveraging high-resolution continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data across both mice and humans. This project is founded on the premise that dynamic features embedded in CGM time-series data capture essential aspects of metabolic regulation that are not accessible through conventional clinical measurements. Your tasks would be to extract, characterize, and validate such biomarkers from large-scale murine CGM datasets and evaluate their robustness across diverse physiological and experimental conditions. A central objective will be to determine the translational relevance of these biomarkers by aligning murine findings with human CGM data and established clinical indicators of metabolic health. You will further contribute to bridging experimental and clinical research by back-translating human-derived glycemic signatures into mechanistic studies in mouse models. The project integrates computational analysis, physiology, and large-scale human data to establish a unified framework for interpreting glucose dynamics across species. Our ultimate goal is to identify therapeutic targets and their small-molecules or peptide-based modulators capable of restoring energy balance in cardiometabolic disease. Our research focuses on how post-translational modifications—particularly reversible phosphorylation—and allosteric regulation of signaling proteins and metabolic enzymes contribute to metabolic control. We also investigate how disruptions in these processes drive the development and progression of cardiometabolic diseases. Job Description We are seeking a passionate Postdoctoral researcher to join our team to identify, characterize, and validate novel molecular mechanisms and/or modulators of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a key regulator of cellular and whole-body energy homeostasis, and its pharmacological modulation represents a promising strategy for the treatment of metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. The goal of this position is to advance fundamental understanding of cellular energy and metabolic regulation through AMPK signaling and explore potential therapeutic applications. The successful candidate will be embedded in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment with expertise spanning metabolic signaling, computational chemistry, in vivo physiology and pharmacology, and molecular and cellular biology. The project will focus on identifying novel molecular mediators and metabolic regulators of AMPK signaling pathways, using biochemical, multi-omics, and computational approaches, alongside established genetic models and chemical tools of AMPK. About UsThe Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) is an academic research Center that pioneers groundbreaking research towards better cardiometabolic health. Through collaborative interdisciplinary research from single-cell genomics to whole-body systems, CBMR aims to transform the basic understanding of cardiometabolic health and accelerate its translation into prevention and treatment strategies. The Center’s uniquely multi- and interdisciplinary approach combines research in genetics, physiology and pharma­cology, to better understand the complex interplay of the many factors that drive cardiometabolic disease. CBMR was established in 2010 at the Faculty of Health & Medical Sciences and has been located in the Maersk Tower at Panum since 2017. The around 260 employees create an international, highly collaborative research environment across disciplines. Our Research The Pers Group is part of an interdisciplinary research environment that combines human genetics, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, and experimental circuit neuroscience to dissect how the brain controls body weight, glucose metabolism and cardiometabolic health. We are a diverse, international team of computational biologists, molecular neuroscientists, and circuit physiologists who work closely with leading collaborators in the US, UK, Switzerland and Denmark. Job Description We have recently identified a previously uncharacterised neuronal population in the brain that is likely to play an important role in the central control of energy homeostasis. We are now seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to functionally interrogate this cell population using state-of-the-art circuit neuroscience approaches. Your tasks would be to: Perform stereotactic injections of viral vectors (Cre-dependent AAVs, DREADDs, anterograde and retrograde tracers) in transgenic mouse lines Carry out in vivo fiber photometry recordings during ingestive, metabolic, and behavioural challenges Map afferent and efferent connectivity of the cell population using mono- and polysynaptic tracing Integrate functional findings with single-cell and spatial transcriptomic datasets generated in the group and by our collaborators Present results at international meetings and lead first-author manuscripts Profile The Postdoc fellowship is aimed at early-career researchers with a basic science background or clinicians who aspire to a career in academic medicine. We are particularly interested in candidates who are familiar with integrative research approaches within the broad area of basic cardiometabolic research with an application toward human pathophysiology. Required qualifications: PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biomedicine, Neuroscience, or related sciences Excellent scientific track (multiple first-author publications) record in relation to career stage Profound knowledge of the central nervous control of energy homeostasis and hypothalamic/brainstem circuit neuroscience Documented hands-on experience with rodent models, including transgenic Cre-driver lines and Cre-dependent viral strategies Demonstrated expertise with stereotactic surgery, in vivo fiber photometry, DREADDs (and/or optogenetics), and neuroanatomical tracing Strong written and oral communication skills in English; ability to thrive in a collaborative, international team Eligibility The Postdoc fellowships within the CBMR International PhD & Postdoc Program are open for applicants with a PhD degree awarded from a university outside of Denmark. The program is also open for applicants with a Danish PhD degree who can document at least 12 months of full-time research experience from outside Denmark during or after the PhD studies. The PhD degree has to be obtained before November 15, 2026. You are not eligible to apply for the program if you have been employed in a postdoctoral position for more than one year at the University of Copenhagen prior to the commencement of the fellowship. Terms of Employment The employment as Postdoc is a full-time position for 2 years. Starting date is November 15, 2026, or after agreement. Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark for the last 10 years.
