PhD position in fungal biology

Within the NWO-National Growthfund Program Cellular Agriculture (CAN) we are recruiting a highly motivated PhD student that will develop a non-model filamentous fungus as an ultimate host for the production of animal proteins from grass. In close collaboration with our academic partners (HAN-BioCentre, Nijmegen and Avans-UAS, Breda) and industrial partners (The Protein Express and Those Vegan Cowboys) these proteins will be produced and characterized for use in food applications. This CAN partnership covers the entire process chain: from strain design (Leiden University, Avans-UAS) and laboratory-scale fermentation (HAN BioCentre, The Protein Express) to process integration and validation (The Protein Express, Those Vegan Cowboys). All consortium partners will closely collaborate and learn from each other in all project work packages. The complementary expertise of all consortium partners will ensure successful development of this new bioprocess from start to finish. The position for the PhD student in this project is a crucial link within the project. PhD position in Acoustic ecology of diving seabirds

Offshore wind farms (OWFs) and CO2 storage sites at sea are crucial components in the green energy transition, but also pose a pressure and risk for the North Sea ecosystem. North Sea POWER is a new NWO-NWA project which will contribute directly to the so-called KEC framework for Assessing Ecological and Cumulative Effects’, by updates on mathematical models and by filling data gaps. A current data gap of large potential impact concerns the effects of underwater noise on diving seabirds, which hear well and otherwise have limited sensory abilities to detect prey, avoid predators, or to communicate underwater. Sounds from construction and operation of OWFs and CO2 storage sites, maintenance vessels, and collateral acoustic changes at sea, may all contribute to spatial patterns and redistribution of diving seabirds, with potential population-level consequences.  The core questions that will be addressed in this PhD-project are: 1) Do guillemots use sounds underwater and is their foraging efficiency affected by noisy conditions? And 2) To what extent can underwater noise explain very large avoidance distances of guillemots around OWFs? Observational and experimental data will be collected on captive birds in a zoo and free-ranging birds at sea, using playback speakers, hydrophones, echosounders, and drones for auditory and visual observations. Key responsibilities Plan and conduct research with diving seabirds in Blijdorp Zoo and at the North Sea. Communicate and collaborate with academic partners and societal stakeholders. Write four manuscripts for publication, resulting in a thesis. Present research at local and international conferences. Co-supervise undergraduate and graduate student projects. PhD position in biofabrication, optogenetics and synthetic biology technologies

In this PhD position, you will conduct research within the biofabrication team, with a specific focus on developing novel biofabrication and bioprinting technologies to control tissue vascularization. Biofabrication combines advanced 3D fabrication technologies with cells and biomaterials to generate living tissues and human-relevant tissue models. Your job In this ERC-funded project, you will join the Levato research group at the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht, where you will develop new strategies to vascularize engineered constructs. This project focuses on developing engineered stem cells and synthetic biology tools to guide tissue-specific vascularization within human organoid-based engineered tissues, and to capture and understand healthy and diseased vascular conditions in the context of diabetes. You will perform cutting-edge research combining synthetic biology strategies, ultra-fast and high-precision light-based volumetric bioprinting technologies, and engineered stem cells. In particular, you will contribute to the development of novel cell engineering and bioprinting strategies to capture, control, and understand dynamic vascular networks and their region- and tissue-specific features. As an initial application, these techniques will be used to investigate blood vessel pathologies associated with diabetes. You will coordinate your work within an (inter)national network of collaborators while working in an ambitious, motivated, multidisciplinary team of veterinarians, clinicians, materials scientists, biologists, and engineers. You will collaborate with partners at the OMBION Center for Animal-Free Biomedical Translation, taking key steps toward establishing the next generation of human disease models and advancing the translation of regenerative medicine therapies. In addition, you will co-supervise BSc and MSc students during their internships, and teaching opportunities will be available. PhD position on Advanced Statistical and AI Methods for Multi-omic Integration

At the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS), Utrecht University, we are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to work on advanced statistical and AI methods for multi-omic integration, focusing on the computational integration of environmental exposure and multi-omics data to identify molecular pathways involved in multimorbidity. Your job Environmental exposures occur as complex mixtures and may simultaneously affect multiple biological systems involved in immune, metabolic, and respiratory health. Increasing evidence suggests that these exposures perturb molecular pathways contributing to multimorbidity across the life course. However, the biological mechanisms linking environmental exposures to multiple disease outcomes remain poorly understood, particularly when integrating multiple molecular layers and complex exposure profiles. In this PhD project, you will develop and apply advanced statistical, computational, and machine learning approaches to identify molecular signatures associated with environmental exposures and investigate their relationship with multimorbidity-related health outcomes. The project will leverage large-scale epidemiological cohort studies combining environmental exposure information with multiple omics layers, including metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, and other high-dimensional molecular datasets. Your work will focus on: investigating associations between environmental exposures and molecular features using mixture-aware and multivariate modelling approaches; integrating multiple omics layers using systems biology, network-based approaches, and graphical models; developing computational frameworks to identify coordinated molecular modules and pathway-level perturbations associated with environmental exposures; applying machine learning and multivariate modelling approaches to investigate shared molecular mechanisms underlying multimorbidity patterns; evaluating the robustness and generalizability of identified molecular signatures across multiple population-based cohorts. Methodological approaches may include multi-omics network analysis, latent factor models, matrix factorization methods, penalized models, graphical models, and explainable machine learning or AI-based frameworks. You will collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers in epidemiology, exposomics, environmental health, computational biology, and data science within national and international collaborative projects. Are you our next Postdoc on the impact of offshore wind farms on the transport dynamics of ichthyoplankton in the North Sea? Job Description As offshore renewable energy rapidly expands, a key scientific challenge is to understand how wind farm-induced changes in currents, turbulence, and stratification affect the transport and survival of ichthyoplankton (fish eggs and larvae). These early life stages determine future fish populations, yet their sensitivity to physical changes remains poorly understood. In this position, you will tackle this challenge by combining fluid dynamics, numerical modelling, and marine ecology to quantify how offshore wind farms alter larval transport pathways and ecosystem connectivity. Your work will contribute directly to sustainable offshore energy development by improving our ability to predict ecological impacts and supporting evidence-based marine spatial planning. In doing so, you will help balance the transition to renewable energy with the protection of marine biodiversity and fisheries.
