Doctoral researcher position in molecular plant biology

We are looking for a candidate to undertake a PhD on extracellular electron exchange between photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic microorganisms, focusing on underlying molecular mechanisms and regulation, and with consideration of possible biotechnological applications. The position is based in the Wey Group within the Molecular Plant Biology unit, Department of Life Technologies at the University of Turku, Finland. The group researches different aspects of “bioelectricity in photosynthetic organisms”. The group will include 8 people by the end of 2026, including 2 postdocs, 3 PhDs, 2 MScs. The main supervisor for this PhD is Dr Laura Wey, an Academy of Finland Research Fellow. The co-supervisor for this PhD is Dr Pablo Ortega Martinez, who is a Postdoctoral Fellow and leads his own research project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation on regulation of photosynthesis by carbon metabolism intermediates. This PhD position is funded by Wey’s Emerging Investigator grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Research Fellow in Cyanobacterial Nutrient Uptake and Metabolism

NIISQ PhD scholarship Exploring novel nasal delivery mechanisms for repairing brain injuries

Job Description The NIISQ PhD scholarship is a prestigious scholarship supported by the National Injury Insurance Scheme Queensland and is part of a large program of research to develop treatment options for treating traumatic brain injury (TBI). We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to develop novel trans-nasal delivery methods such as peptides and micellar formulations, for targeted delivery of different therapeutic agents such as drugs, extracellular vesicles, growth factors and other such small bioactive molecules, for repairing traumatic brain injuries. The position is part of the Cure Traumatic Brain Injury project which focuses on identifying and testing therapeutic cellular and subcellular products suitable for translation to the clinic. The team has the ambitious aim of driving products into clinical trial within five years. The primary focus of this PhD position is to i) systematically explore the different carriers for trans-nasal delivery of different molecules and/or cell components ii) characterise and optimise these carriers/vehicles from an application viewpoint, and iii) test the efficiency of these approaches in rodent models of TBI. Postdoctoral Researcher in Mechanisms of Genetic Kidney Disorders

Position Summary  The Barua Lab is seeking up to 3 highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellows for full-time, two-year positions at the University Health Network (UHN). Applicants should be in the top 5% of candidates within their field, with multiple high-impact research outputs and high potential for broad impact. Those with research experience collaborating with industry partners and/or commercialization experience are preferred. Successful applicants will join the laboratory of Dr. Moumita Barua. The 2 major project subtypes include human omics research utilizing large cohorts like the UK Biobank and All of Us; or mechanistic projects exploring genetic kidney disorders including Alport syndrome, congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), and Joubert syndrome. The laboratory is located in the research tower attached to Toronto General Hospital and is supported by peer-reviewed funding (CIHR, Kidney Foundation of Canada) and philanthropic awards. Dr. Moumita Barua is a Clinician Scientist at the University Health Network (UHN), Senior Scientist at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Her research program aims to improve diagnostics and clinical outcomes for individuals living with kidney disease. The Barua Lab integrates human genetics, molecular biology, and preclinical modeling to elucidate disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets. Genetic discoveries from patient and population cohorts guide the development of clinically relevant models in the lab. Major ongoing projects include: Genome-wide and other omic association studies of kidney traits, Pax2 mediated kidney repair and regeneration, and Mechanistic studies in genetic kidney disease models including for Alport syndrome, CAKUT and Joubert syndrome. Duties Design and execute molecular biology experiments involving next-generation and single-cell sequencing workflows. Analyze and interpret large-scale multi-omics datasets (epigenomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic). Conduct preclinical studies using mouse models of kidney disease. Collaborate with laboratory scientists to validate and integrate findings. Prepare manuscripts, presentations, and scientific reports. Contribute to grant applications and progress reporting. Qualifications PhD obtained in the last 5 years, or MD or DDS in the last 10 years in molecular biology, bioinformatics, genomics, biomedical sciences, or a related field. Applicant cannot already be at UHN. Experience with genetically characterized cohorts is required Proven experience working with large datasets and performing statistical analyses. Proficiency in next-generation sequencing (WGS, WES, RNA-seq, single-cell sequencing). Hands-on experience with single-cell sequencing technologies and associated analysis tools. Recruitment for the post of Postdoctoral Researcher

Position Summary:A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Chan at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The Chan Laboratory studies the biology of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), leukemic stem cells, and clonal hematopoiesis (CH), with a strong translational focus on discovering and exploiting novel therapeutic vulnerabilities in pre-malignant and malignant myeloid cells. This project will define the genetic and synthetic-lethal interactions of high-risk clonal hematopoiesis mutations, including TP53 and spliceosome (splicing factor) mutations, that drive the progression of CH to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and AML. The successful candidate will combine genetically engineered mouse models with genome-wide and focused CRISPR/Cas9 screens to uncover context-specific dependencies in mutant hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. The ultimate goal is to nominate new strategies to intercept high-risk clonal hematopoiesis and to prevent or treat myeloid malignancy. Duties: Design, execute, and analyze pooled CRISPR/Cas9 screens (genome-wide and focused) in primary cells and cell-line models to identify synthetic-lethal and genetic interactions with high-risk CH mutations. Generate and characterize genetically engineered and transplantation mouse models of clonal hematopoiesis and myeloid malignancy, including colony management and in vivo experiments. Construct and produce lentiviral and/or retroviral vectors for gene knockout, knockdown, and overexpression. Perform a broad range of molecular and cellular biology techniques. E.g., molecular cloning, qPCR, Western blotting, flow cytometry and cell sorting, and primary hematopoietic cell culture. Analyze and integrate functional genomic and next-generation sequencing datasets in collaboration with the lab’s computational team. Maintain rigorous, well-documented records and adhere to laboratory quality, biosafety, and animal-care standards. Prepare manuscripts, figures, and presentations and present findings at lab meetings and scientific conferences. Contribute to grant writing and help conceive new research directions for the laboratory. Mentor and support graduate and undergraduate trainees as needed. Postdoctoral Researcher focusing on developing foundation models and secure computational infrastructure for translational cancer research

Position Summary:We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with strong expertise in AI/ML to join a major interdisciplinary initiative focused on developing foundation models and secure computational infrastructure for translational cancer research.  The first major objective is to build a general-purpose drug foundation model capable of transfer learning across diverse prediction tasks, including mechanism of action classification, clinical drug response prediction in tumour subtypes, ADMET and toxicity profiling, combinatorial drug synergy, and drug repurposing. The goal is to move beyond task-specific architectures and datasets toward flexible models that can generalize across therapeutic contexts. The second major objective is to develop and apply secure, scalable, and privacy-preserving computational infrastructure to support biomarker discovery across diverse treatment modalities. This will include building agentic AI approaches to harmonize clinical, genomic, and transcriptomic data across public and private cohorts, while assessing the predictive value of DNA and RNA signatures in federated settings where sensitive data remain under local governance. Together, these efforts aim to advance AI-driven drug discovery, biomarker development, and clinical translation by integrating modern machine learning, multimodal biomedical data, and robust distributed analysis frameworks. The successful candidate will work in the Haibe-Kains Lab at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network. Duties: Design and implement multimodal drug foundation models that integrate molecular graph representations, bulk transcriptomic perturbation signatures, and multi-omics cell-state representations. Develop transfer learning strategies to support diverse drug prediction tasks, including mechanism of action classification, clinical drug response prediction, ADMET and toxicity profiling, combinatorial drug synergy, and drug repurposing. Build flexible AI/ML workflows that reduce reliance on task-specific architectures and enable generalization across therapeutic contexts, tumour subtypes, and treatment modalities. Architect and deploy secure, scalable, and privacy-preserving computational infrastructure for biomarker discovery and translational cancer research. Develop agentic AI-enabled frameworks to support the harmonization, annotation, quality control, and integration of clinical, genomic, and transcriptomic data across public cohorts and private institutional datasets. Implement distributed and federated analysis pipelines in which each contributing dataset can be analysed separately, enabling multi-cohort biomarker assessment without raw data centralization. Develop systematic workflows to evaluate published and user-specified DNA and RNA signatures, including immune, stromal, mutation-based, pathway-level, and treatment-response signatures. Assess the predictive value of molecular signatures across cancer types and treatment modalities, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and emerging therapeutic approaches. Integrate biomarker discovery and immunotherapy inference pipelines with clinical data warehouses to support translational studies in collaboration with clinical, industry, and computational partners. Contribute to responsible data sharing frameworks, data governance processes, IRB/ethics protocols, and regulatory documentation as required. Collaborate closely with computational biologists, software developers, clinicians, and wet-lab scientists to build, validate, and translate predictive models and biomarker discovery workflows. We operate at the intersection of clinical oncology, experimental biology, and computational genomics, with a focus on decoding chromatin architecture and epigenetic regulation in cancer. Our work combines 3D genome mapping, functional epigenomics, and multi-omic integration to understand tumor heterogeneity and identify clinically actionable regulatory mechanisms. A central goal of the lab is to translate epigenomic insights into precision oncology strategies, including biomarker development and epigenome-informed therapeutic approaches. We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to lead experimental efforts focused on 3D genome organization in cancer. The successful candidate will drive projects integrating chromatin architecture with transcriptional and regulatory landscapes, using a combination of bulk, single-cell, and spatial epigenomics approaches.
