Research assistant position to study the function of the mitochondrial replication machinery in vivo and in vitro

Duties  Mitochondria contain their own genome that codes for several subunits of the respiratory chain. We have developed in vitro techniques to study mitochondrial DNA replication with purified proteins. We are now hiring a research assistant to study the function of the mitochondrial replication machinery in vivo and in vitro. In the planned work, the molecular consequences of disease-causing mutations in mitochondrial replication factors will be analyzed. The successful candidate will also identify small molecular compounds that influence mitochondrial DNA replication. The work will include expression, purification, and characterization of proteins in recombinant form. The successful applicant will also work with cloning, in vitro mutagenesis, and study DNA replication in a reconstituted system with radiolabelled nucleotides Qualifications  Bachelor’s degree in biomedical laboratory science or an equivalent relevant field. Documented experience with techniques/methods involved in the duties is required, particularly protein expression and protein purification. Previous studies of proteins involved in mitochondrial DNA replication are considered a strong merit. The work involves extensive collaboration, and therefore good teamwork and interpersonal skills are important. The applicant must have a good command of English, both spoken and written. During this period, the intestinal microbiota plays a central role in shaping intestinal and neurodevelopmental processes. Microbial colonization supports healthy development by promoting maturation of intestinal barrier function, immune tolerance, and gut–brain communication, but when dysregulated, it may contribute to disease, including chronic intestinal inflammation and impaired neurodevelopment. Despite the recognized importance of microbiota-driven signaling in postnatal development, the mechanisms that distinguish beneficial from detrimental host–microbe interactions remain poorly understood. In the intestine, goblet cells produce a mucus barrier that physically separates the microbiota from the epithelium, thereby limiting host–microbe interactions. This barrier undergoes rapid postnatal maturation and is a key regulator of intestinal homeostasis in adulthood. However, its role during early life—particularly in shaping immune maturation and systemic developmental processes—remains incompletely understood. Purpose/Objective: The main objective of this doctoral project is to define the role of goblet cells and mucus in regulating postnatal intestinal and neurodevelopment. The doctoral student will use mouse models with an impaired mucus barrier to investigate the role of mucus in regulating the gut–brain axis, with a focus on immune and neuronal maturation.Methods: Core methodologies include immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, proteomics, RNA sequencing, and RNAscope, alongside in vivo experiments in mice. The student will join the Gustafsson Lab at the Department of Physiology, which is also part of the Mucin Biology Groups—a collaborative research environment focused on goblet cell and mucus biology. Practical experience with laboratory animals is desirable. Experience in physiology, mucosal immunology, and goblet cell and mucus biology, as well as relevant techniques such as confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and transcriptional data analysis, will be considered merits. DLBCL is a heterogeneous tumor where both the malignant clone and the tumor microenvironment contribute to the variable clinical picture. However, the complexity can probably not only be explained by genetic changes, and it is also difficult to predict whether such changes really affect protein expression and thus the phenotype of the tumor cell. By parallel studies on global protein expression, RNA-sequencing and digital image analysis of immunohistochemical staining in tumor tissue from DLBCL patients, we have found that overexpression of interferon-stimulated genes/proteins (especially belonging to the PYHIN group), appears to affect both prognosis and response to treatment. After performing further in vitro studies in DLBCL cell lines, our data also indicate a functional role.Interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) play an important role primarily in antiviral immunity, but in recent years it has become increasingly evident that they can also affect immunosuppressive mechanisms in various forms of cancer and then induce both tumor progression and treatment resistance. Their significance in DLBCL is so far unknown.The main purpose of the project is to test the hypothesis if interferon-stimulated proteins, primarily from the PYHIN group, influence treatment resistance in DLBCL and if they could be of therapeutic potential. The specific aims are to:1. study the functional role of interferon-stimulated genes/proteins in DLBCL cell lines,2. investigate the therapeutic effect of blocking/down-regulating/degrading interferon-stimulated genes/proteins, as proof-of-concept, in vitro and in vivo using DLBCL mouse models. Documented experience of experimental studies in cell culture with CRISPR technology and flow cytometry is an advantage, as is experience of RNA/protein preparation, RNA sequencing and bioinformatics. Furthermore, experience of working with mouse cancer models is desirable. Postdoctoral Researcher position in Tropical Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services, and Trait Based Tree Species Selection

At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment. The department is placed at two different localities: in Natrium at Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg and at the Kristineberg marine research station operated by the Marine Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg. You can read more about our employment benefits here.  Subject area Tropical Forest Socio-Ecology  Subject area description  The research focuses on advancing biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service assessment to support selection of native tree species for climate-adapted forest restoration and agroforestry within the Albertine Rift region in Africa. The postdoctor will integrate ecological, climatic and social factors to evaluate species’ adaptability, environmental benefits, and the ecosystem service provisioning. The role bridges ecological science, and participatory approaches to develop evidence-based, purpose-driven native tree species selection frameworks that enhance landscape resilience, human well-being, and long-term forest restoration success. Duties The aim of this postdoctoral position is to advance the scientific and applied foundations for selecting climate-adapted native tree species that enhance biodiversity, ecosystem services, and community well-being within the Albertine Rift. The postdoctor will lead key components within the project ‘Optimization of Tree Species Selection for Improved Ecosystem Services in Tropical Forest Restoration and Agroforestry’ funded by the Swedish research council Formas. This will include synthesizing biodiversity, ecosystem service, and environmental suitability data to support climate-adapted species recommendations. Tasks include conducting a systematic literature review, collecting data from diverse forest restorations, tree plantations and agroforestry systems to provide background information for tree species selection supporting different ecosystem services and ground-based data to validate and improve remote sensing assessments of plantation success.  In addition, the postdoctor will analyse ecological, trait-based, and environmental datasets to establish species–environment relationships and assess tree species sensitivity to climate stressors using both global databases and experimental data from different sites including those within the Rwanda TREE project (https://www.rwandatree.com). The postdoctor will have close collaboration with the complementary project OpTIBES (https://www.biodiversa.eu/2026/04/03/optibes/) and its partners—spanning universities in Sweden, Norway and Denmark as well as universities, government agencies, and NGOs in Rwanda, Burundi, and the DR Congo. The postdoctor will contribute to scientific publications, reporting, and dissemination activities, supporting the translation of results into actionable restoration and agroforestry recommendations. The position is embedded in an interdisciplinary, international research environment spanning ecology, remote sensing, socio-ecological systems, and climate adaptation. Treatment consists of chemotherapy, sometimes combined with allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Despite improved treatment outcomes, the risk of relapse remains high, particularly among adults, where more than half of patients relapse within 1–3 years. Relapse is often caused by residual leukemic cells remaining in the bone marrow, referred to as measurable residual disease (MRD), making MRD analysis central for treatment decisions and early detection of relapse. To enable molecular MRD analysis in a larger proportion of patients than is currently possible, our research group has developed ultra-high sensitivity next-generation sequencing (UHS-NGS), a DNA-based method that can be designed for both common and patient-specific mutations. The overall aim of this PhD project is to investigate how UHS-NGS can be used for MRD detection in order to contribute to improved patient management and increased long-term survival in acute myeloid leukemia. The subprojects are based on clinical studies in which UHS-NGS is performed retrospectively or prospectively on blood and/or bone marrow samples. The doctoral student will participate in the administration and coordination of clinical studies and perform UHS-NGS and whole-genome analyses on study samples. The project involves data collection and communication in Swedish. Practical experience in deep sequencing and hematological research is considered meritorious. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.   Project description:  The tau protein undergoes extensive post-translational modifications, including phosphorylation and proteolytic cleavage, giving rise to a wide range of molecular forms. Several of these forms are altered in Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies and are therefore of great interest as biomarkers. Specifically, phosphorylated tau species in plasma, such as pTau217, have demonstrated very high diagnostic accuracy for Alzheimer’s disease. At the same time, significant challenges remain regarding standardization and comparability between different analytical methods. Mass spectrometry has enabled detailed analysis of tau in cerebrospinal fluid and plasma, but low concentrations have previously limited its applicability. The new Orbitrap Astral Zoom technology offers greatly improved sensitivity and enables analysis of very low levels of tau in small sample volumes. Purpose/Objectives The overall aim of the project is to develop and apply ultra-sensitive mass spectrometry-based methods for characterization of tau in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid. The project aims to: increase understanding of tau-related disease processes,identify biomarkers for different tauopathies,develop reference methods for standardization of clinical biomarkers, particularly plasma pTau217. Implementation The project includes method development and analysis of clinical samples from patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies. The work includes development of advanced mass spectrometry methods on the Orbitrap/Astral platform, deep profiling of tau species in biological fluids, and development and validation of an isotope dilution mass spectrometry-based reference method for plasma pTau217. About us  The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering tackles contemporary and emerging challenges for the built and natural environment, ranging from resource utilisation, pollution and climate change to digitalisation and inequality. We combine expertise in architecture, civil engineering and related disciplines to build a better world.  In the research area Water Quality and Resource Engineering, within the division of Water Environment Technology, we develop methods and technologies to analyse, treat, and manage water quality, from contaminants to valuable resources. Microbial ecosystems, natural organic matter, water and wastewater treatment processes, and monitoring technologies for both natural and engineered environments are central themes of our research. The goal: circular resource use and protection of the environment and human health. About the research project   Reactive nitrogen must be removed from wastewater to prevent eutrophication of aquatic environments. However, the microbial processes removing nitrogen also emit nitrous oxide (N2O), which is a powerful greenhouse gas. In this project, we address the mechanisms causing N2O emissions from wastewater treatment to propose strategies for mitigation. We will do this by investigating the composition, activity, and N2O emission of the microbial communities in full-scale wastewater treatment processes and in laboratory experiments, and use the knowledge gained for refined emission predictions using mechanistic and data-driven modelling. Job description Alpha Cell is a new SciLifeLab program aimed at building the first molecular-level computational model of the human cell. The program is led by Jan Ellenberg, Director of SciLifeLab and Mathias Ulhen, Director of the Human Protein Atlas, together with a collaborative, multi-institutional constellation of SciLifeLab researchers and infrastructure units.  The Human Protein Atlas (HPA) is a large-scale international effort to map the spatial distribution of proteins in human cells, tissues, and organs using antibody-based imaging, transcriptomics, and systems biology approaches. Since its launch, the atlas has generated one of the world’s most comprehensive open resources for spatial molecular biology, comprising millions of images and extensive molecular measurements. All data are released openly and widely used by researchers worldwide.  The Alpha Cell program is recruiting a postdoctoral in Biological Data Systems to develop scalable data infrastructure and computational systems for large biological datasets. The position will be embedded within the Human Protein Atlas at KTH and SciLifeLab. The successful candidate will work closely with Avlant Nilsson cancer cell modeling lab and Wei Ouyang’s AICell lab who together will develop the first foundation cell model based on HPA and other external large-scale datasets.  The role focuses on establishing the data foundations for the program’s initial modelling efforts by identifying, evaluating, integrating, and structuring large biological datasets into scalable, standardized, and AI-ready frameworks for computational modelling. Working in SciLifeLab’s highly interdisciplinary environment, where imaging, molecular data, and computational methods are developed in parallel, the postdoc will develop systems and services that make biological data accessible to AI and computational tools, collaborating closely with the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) team and other researchers to enhance data integration, annotation, structure, and accessibility, connect external datasets, and support open science and emerging AI-driven workflows. Qualifications Requirements A doctoral degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, cell biology with a strong computational component, or a closely related field.
