Technician position – Stress resilience in plants

Your job Do you want to participate in the research of the laboratory of Plant Physiology at Wageningen University & Research? Do you have a passion for plant physiology? Your duties and responsibilities as Technician include: Your role will involve technical assistance in: Providing technical support in addressing research questions related to plant genetics and seed characteristics in recruiting microbes. Contributing to the execution of the research project. Assisting in teaching activities. Supporting the supervision of MSc and BSc students. You will work here This technician position is part of the recently funded open technology project, MiSeed,“The hidden potential of the seed microbiome: How does the seed microbiome shape seed performance and plant drought resilience?”. Plants grow in interaction with microbes in order to survive. These microbes can enter the next plant generation via the seed. You will be supervised by Dr. Rumyana Karlova and Prof. dr. Leónie Bentsink. Your qualities You are a highly motivated and skilled technician in the field of plant physiology and molecular biology, who thrives in multidisciplinary and challenging projects. Phd position in Welfare assessment of fish in public aquaria

Your job Aquariums and zoos are in a unique position to increase the understanding required to maintain and display a diverse variety of fish species in a positive state of wellbeing (Smith, 2023). We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the project ‘Welfare assessment of fish in public aquaria’, a collaboration between Wageningen Livestock Research, Stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamse Diergaarde en Koninklijke Burgers’ Zoo, and funded as Public-Private Partnership by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature. Positive animal welfare is a prerequisite for the existence of zoos and their unique role in the conservation of endangered species. Animals must be able to exhibit their natural behavior as much as possible, appropriate for their species-specific needs and legally stipulated in the Decree on Animal Keepers. This also applies to fish, for which, after lengthy scientific debate, it has only recently been established that this group of animals can consciously experience pain and stress, and also possesses more cognitive abilities than previously thought. Therefore, there is a lot of catching up to do to determine and possibly improve the welfare of fish in public aquariums. As a PhD student, you will contribute to research to monitor fish welfare in public aquariums, identify distinguishing characteristics, and develop concrete solutions to improve welfare. Ultimately, you will contribute to a scientifically sound welfare assessment for fish in public aquariums. The majority of the research will take place on-site at the project partners Diergaarde Blijdorp and Burgers’ Zoo, under the practical guidance of experienced experts. You will also collaborate with WUR researchers from various disciplines: animal physiology, animal welfare, marine ecology, and experimental zoology. The postdoc will be part of the ERC funded project REACT: Regreening Africa with Natural Regeneration to Madelon Lohbeck (PI). The project aims to understand how, when and where natural regeneration contributes to forest and landscape restoration. This includes: what tree species regenerate under what social and environmental conditions? What restoration outcomes can be achieved and for whom? As REACT postdoc you will: Synthesize insights derived from primary field data across two social ecological systems in Kenya (collected by the REACT PhD candidates). Scale mechanistic insights by analyzing patterns of regeneration derived from secondary-forest data (2ndFOR network on secondary succession) and citizen-science data (the regreening Africa project lead by CIFOR-ICRAF). Contribute to outreach, science communication and develop decision tools for stakeholders. Be part of the REACT research team. Collaborate with various research partners and restoration stakeholders and actively participate in research networks. Support the PI in coordinating research activities.
