PhD or Postdoctoral Researcher position in Understanding and manipulating ubiquitin ligase specificities

The research group Ubiquitin Signaling Specificity (Dr. Sonja Lorenz) invites applications for the position as a  PhD student or Postdoc (f/m/d)– Understanding and manipulating ubiquitin ligase specificities – Our laboratory aims to understand how the posttranslational modifier ubiquitin coordinates eukaryotic physiology. A major key lies in the action of ubiquitin ligases that recruit specific substrates for ubiquitination and determine the ubiquitin signals they are decorated with. The immense potential of ubiquitin ligases for therapeutic applications has been illustrated by the clinical efficacy of immunomodulatory drugs in the treatment of hematological malignancies and recent advances with PROTACs and molecular glues. However, efficient targeting of ubiquitin ligases in the clinic is still limited by our insufficient understanding of their structural mechanisms and integration into cellular pathways. We offer a PhD or Postdoc position to explore one of the following research directions: (i) The mechanism, specificity, and consequences of cellular small-molecule ubiquitination, building on our recent discovery that drug-like compounds are selectively ubiquitinated by human HUWE1 (doi: 10.1038/s41467-025-63442-x). (ii) The structural mechanism and biological functions of TKUL, a dual functional kinase-ligase we identified as a novel virulence factor in Leishmania (doi: 10.1016/j.molcel.2025.09.002) (iii) Structural analyses of localization-dependent ubiquitination, combining cell-based analyses with cryo-EM/cryo-ET. PhD candidates should hold/soon expect a MSc or equivalent degree in a relevant area of the life sciences. Initial experience in one or more of the following techniques is desired: protein biochemistry, mammalian cell biology, or any aspect of structural biology. Postdoc candidates should hold/soon expect a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant area of the life sciences. PhD or Postdoctoral Researcher position – Behavioral Neurobiology

The Neural Mechanisms of Natural Behavior Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence in Germany has an opening for a pre- or postdoctoral researcher to join an HFSP-funded research project investigating the neural mechanisms of avian biosonar behavior. This multidisciplinary study focuses on neural processing of somatosensory and auditory information in freely flying birds. It aims at uncovering which sensory modality the birds use for sound reception during echolocation. Combining behavioral monitoring and cutting-edge wireless technology to capture extracellular neuronal activity and vocalization behavior simultaneously (see Hoffmann et al. (2019) Nat Commun 10(1):2577 for reference (DOI)), the project seeks to test the potential of facial feathers in oilbirds (Steatornis caripensis) to act as high-frequency sound sensors. Postdoctoral position in Molecular Plant Biology

The Wallner group at the Department of Comparative Development and Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne is seeking a Molecular Plant Biology Postdoc (m/f/d) to contribute to the investigation of tissue patterning, polarity and body axes formation during sporeling development of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha. The candidate will interact closely with Dr. Eva-Sophie Wallner and members of her group and be involved in the design and execution of experiments, followed by statistical data analysis and publication. One major current project aims to answer how the first flat body structure – the prothallus – develops from a single-celled spore and how this structure establishes dorsoventrality de novo in response to light (see also Wallner and Dolan. The successful candidate will explore the regulatory network of dorsoventral tissue development by performing state-of-the-art genetic and biochemical approaches, such as proximity labelling and ChIP-seq/DAP-seq followed by CRISPR mutant analysis of identified candidates. Confocal microscopy and engagement with MorphoGraphX and associated image analysis methodologies used in the Department will be highly encouraged, as well as collaborating with the local facilities. Postdoctoral position – The sensory ecology of worm towers

The goal of our basic research is to develop a quantitative and predictive understanding of the decisions and movements of animals in their natural environment. The project We recently established that towering behavior is a mechanism for collective dispersal in Caenorhabditis nematodes. We also identified natural dispersal vectors for nematode species in our field sites, defining the ecological context for tower-mediated dispersal. For this project, we aim to understand how worm towers acquire, process, and respond to environmental and social information using their senses (e.g., mechano-, olfactory-, and electro-sensing) to achieve successful tower construction, vector detection, and collective relocation. We seek to address whether worms perform more effectively as a sensory collective than as isolated individuals. We are also interested in the environmental adaptation of the sensory systems and decision-making using sensory information. Research will involve designing, executing, and analyzing experiments to address one or more of these questions. This project will adopt a primarily laboratory-based approach and may incorporate field work in Landkreis Konstanz. The aim is to determine the applicability of such bacteria for reducing nitrous oxide emissions from wastewater treatment plants. The potential of these bacteria will be tested in microscopic experiments, for example, under conditions realistic to wastewater treatment.
