Department of Veterinary Medicine – Institute for Animal and Environmental Hygiene Research Associate (Pre-doctoral) (m/f/d) with 67% part-time employment, fixed-term contract of up to 4 years, pay grade 14 TV-L FU, reference number: 0810 WiMi Infectiology Application deadline: February 9, 2026 The Institute for Animal and Environmental Hygiene is dedicated to veterinary education, focusing on hygiene in animal husbandry, hygiene and infection prevention in veterinary clinics and practices, the interactions between animal husbandry and the environment, and animal, environmental, and consumer protection. The Institute’s research areas include the development of intervention measures against various infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance in livestock farming, questions concerning the transmission, introduction, and survival of pathogens from livestock farming in the environment, and questions concerning disinfection in animal housing, veterinary clinics, and practices Responsibilities: Contributing to research and teaching at the Institute for Animal and Environmental Hygiene at the Free University of Berlin, supervising technical staff, doctoral candidates, and interns, project management, and independently developing project ideas up to the grant application stage. This position serves the candidate’s own academic qualification (further training to become a specialist veterinarian in animal and environmental hygiene and/or a Diplomate of the European College for Veterinary Microbiology). Participation in veterinary services for the clinic and research facilities. Employment requirements: Completed academic university degree in veterinary medicine (license to practice). Desired: Sound experience in the fields of animal hygiene, microbiology and molecular biology, in working with infectious agents (BSL2), preferably at a veterinary training institution; relevant experience with epidemiological and infectious disease investigations at the herd or veterinary clinic level, especially also with antibiotic-resistant pathogens; experience in applying for projects, experience in the organization and coordination of interdisciplinary research.
