Position of Postdoctoral researcher in evolutionary genomics

More concretely your work package, as a Postdoctoral researcher in evolutionary genomics of sex chromosomes and sex-specific recombination in anurans and for the validation of your doctoral research and, contains: A postdoctoral position is available in the Ma lab: Evolutionary Genomics of Sex (https://www.wmalab.com) in the Biology Department at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). Our lab aims to understand how sex chromosomes and sex determination systems evolve, why they are highly labile in some lineages but extremely stable in others, and how recombination shapes these dynamics across the tree of life. You will work on a project focused on sex chromosomes and extreme heterochiasmy across anuran lineages, with a particular emphasis on: assembling and analysing large, repeat-rich frog genomes; performing comparative genomics across lineages with different sex-determining systems (XY, ZW, homomorphic vs differentiated sex chromosomes); investigating the drivers of sex chromosome turnover, transposable elements and repeats landscape and evolution; studying the evolution of sex-specific recombination rates and landscapes. The project will involve field sampling and basic molecular lab work, and will combine long-read genome assembly, comparative and population genomics, and the analysis of recombination patterns and structural variation. Depending on the candidate’s interests and expertise, there will also be opportunities to integrate cytogenetics and/or evo-devo approaches, as appropriate to the project’s goals. For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will serve as your home base. 3 – Profile What do we expect from you? You hold a PhD in evolutionary biology, genomics, bioinformatics, or a closely related field. You have a solid expertise in evolutionary/population genomics and molecular evolution, with clear interest in sex chromosomes/sex determination, recombination (heterochiasmy), transposable elements evolution, or genome evolution in non-model species; You have a proven experience analysing high-throughput sequencing data, ideally including genome assembly and/or comparative genomics (large or repeat-rich genomes are a plus); You have strong programming and data analysis skills (e.g. Python and/or R, Unix), and you are familiar with reproducible workflows; You are motivated to work on frog genomes to understand sex chromosome turnover and the evolution of recombination landscapes, and to link genomic patterns to evolutionary mechanisms; Your experience in prior fieldwork is preferred; You have a valid EU driving licence (or equivalent); You are willing to contribute to ongoing projects, co-supervise MSc/BSc students, and (optionally) be involved in a small amount of teaching. You stayed abroad for at least 12 months of the 3 years preceding the start date, and during this period you did not work or study in Belgium. The McWilliams Lab investigates physiological autophagy, a membrane-driven lysosomal degradation pathway essential for cell, circuit and tissue homeostasis. Impairments in autophagy and lysosomal function are causally linked to neurodegeneration and age-related pathology. We use integrative multiscale approaches to define the mechanistic interplay between autophagy and metabolism and determine how this relationship impacts neural integrity in health and disease. Position of Doctoral Researcher in Macroevolution and Phenotypic Diversification of Dung Beetles

We invite applications for a fully funded three-year Doctoral Researcher position at the Finnish Museum of Natural History. The successful candidate will join the research group of Dr. Sergei Tarasov and an international network of collaborators. The position is part of a broader project on dung beetle evolution funded by the Research Council of Finland. About the job The PhD project will aim to uncover the macroevolutionary mechanisms driving dung beetle phenotypic diversification. The PhD candidate will investigate how dung beetle phenomes evolved during adaptive radiations by integrating phylogenomic and phenotypic data, high-dimensional phenotypic datasets, and advanced evolutionary models. A central focus will be on testing how major environmental transitions—such as the K–Pg extinction and the Late Miocene grassland expansion—reshaped dung availability and triggered shifts in phenotypic evolutionary rates. The appointee will be encouraged to undertake short research visits to collaborators in the USA and Australia and will participate in the supervision of undergraduate students. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated candidate to conduct cutting-edge research on insect evolution, morphology, comparative phylogenetics and natural history collections. The successful candidate will work closely with the project’s Principal Investigator and international collaborators. The appointee will take primary responsibility for conducting research, performing data analyses, preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting results at international conferences. The work is related to the production of bioactive microbial polyketide natural products in Escherichia coli. The subproject focuses on production of (i) decaketides through engineering of minimal polyketide synthase enzyme complexes and (ii) discovery of novel biosynthetic gene clusters that can be utilized for production of decaketide and dodecaketide natural products in gram-negative bacteria. Who we are looking for Requirements Knowledge in enzymology, structural biology and protein engineering are essential. Project description The postdoctoral researcher will work in the EIC Pathfinder OPEN project:  “Plasmonic nanopore technologies for automatic manipulation and Raman spectroscopic sequencing of single proteins (RamanProSeq)” that aims to develop Raman spectroscopic single-molecule protein sequencing technology capable of reading protein primary sequence at single-amino-acid resolution by integrating plasmonic nanopores with a high-speed Raman detection system, an automated control system, computer simulations, and advanced Raman-based bioinformatics. The RamanProSeq consortium includes Prof. Shuai Li in University of Oulu (Finland), Dr. Francesco De Angelis in Italian Institute of Technology (Italy), Dr. Cuifeng Ying in the Nottingham Trent University (UK), Dr. James Yates in Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (Portugal), Dr. Lu Cheng in University of Eastern Finland (Finland) and Prof. Maria Fyte in RWTH Aachen University (Germany) who are leading experts in intelligent automation, ultrafast SERS spectroscopy, nanopore fabrication and engineering, single molecule biochemistry and biophysics, computational biotechnology and AI bioinformatics. Assistant professor Jianan Huang will be the supervisor for fabrication, development and Raman spectroscopic measurement of plasmonic nanopores on nanopipettes in this call and get support from all the partners. Description of the position The tasks of the postdoctoral researcher will be fabrication and characterization of plasmonic nanopore on glass nanopipettes as well as measurement of ion currents and Raman spectroscopy of the biomolecules (DNA, peptides, proteins) in the nanopores such as: Design and fabricate glass nanopipettes and characterise them by biomolecule translocation; Design, fabricate and characterize plasmonic nanopores on the nanopipettes with low electric noise; Measurement and preliminary analysis of ion current and Raman spectra of biomolecules in the device; The work duties may include teaching with no more than 10% of working time. The nanopore fabrications can be firstly based on published protocols and then improved to fit the needs of the project. The biomolecule design, molecule-nanopore interfaces, automatic control of molecule translocation in the nanopore and deep data analysis will be handled by other researchers, discussed and solved together in the consortium. You hold a Master’s degree in cell biology, cell technology, molecular biology or related field or you expect to obtain your Master’s degree before 1st of June 2026. You have experience in the following areas: Solid theoretical background in cell biology and hands on expertise with mammalian cell cultures, skills with molecular biology methods related to cell characterizations. Experience in human stem cell culturing, gene editing of cells and ophthalmic research is a plus but not required. You have fluent skills in work organization and time management, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
