Position Details Department of Inflammation and Ageing, School of Infection, Inflammation and Immunology, College of Medicine and Health Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK Full time starting salary is normally in the range £45,943 – £77,196 Clinical Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to March 2029 Closing date: 12th March 2026 Background The Medical Research Council (MRC) has recently funded a Four-year, £1.5M cohort study, that is studying the impact of e-cigarettes on immune and epithelial cells within the lungs of smokers trying to quit using e-cigarettes. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide, and a risk factor for many diseases. With an ageing population, the profound economic and health burden of smoking-related disease continues to increase. E-cigarettes are an effective, NICE recommended smoking cessation tool yet the long-term effects of vaping remain uncertain. Our short-term exposure studies have shown the deleterious effects of e-cigarette exposure on innate immune cell function (neutrophils, alveolar macrophages), suggesting potential harm from chronic exposure. This project aims to address this knowledge gap by recruiting a cohort of healthy smokers aiming to quit smoking using e-cigarettes, to provide critical data needed to determine safety and to inform personal choice, public debate, and policy. This longitudinal cohort study will evaluate accumulation of toxins in the airways, changes in epithelial and innate immune cell functions during smoking cessation, by combining a multi-omic approach with whole-cell effector functions and characterise changes in the respiratory microbiome. This vacancy is for a clinical research fellow (CRF) working as part of the Acute Care research theme in the department of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham. The post will deliver a mixed job role working within the University of Birmingham as an MRC funded fellow (60%) and supporting the NIHR Clinical Research Facility (40%) aiding in the delivery of early phase and first-in-man clinical trials. Role Summary The post-holder will contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an established research project, specifically an MRC funded Project grant EVALUATE. The CRF will lead on delivery of this cohort study, driving patient recruitment in collaboration with nursing team at the NIHR Clinical Research Facility, supervising and undertaking sample collection including bronchoscopic sampling of the lower airways and ensuring participant eCRFs are and clinical databases are updated throughout the study. The post holder will benefit from the infrastructure and expertise in the Acute care team, as well as the track record of delivering patient cohort studies and clinical trials. This job share role will be integrated with a 40% job role with the NIHR Clinical Research Facility to support delivery of early phase clinical trials which require clinical support. This post is funded for 36 months. The post-holder will be expected to register for a higher degree and will be supported to apply for further development and funding. Research Fellow in Plant and Soil Microbiology

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton. The School hosts a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community addressing global challenges at the interface of biodiversity, agriculture, and society. You will work on a Leverhulme Trust–funded project investigating the ecological and socio-economic importance of bat guano in Mexico. The project integrates bat ecology, cave ecosystems, microbiology, plant biology, and social science to understand how this under-recognised natural resource supports agriculture and rural livelihoods, and how it can be managed sustainably. The role  The post is funded by the Leverhulme Trust as part of the project “Quantifying the socio-economic consequences of losing bat guano services”, awarded to Dr. Veronica Zamora-Gutierrez, Dr. William L. King, and Dr. Kelvin Peh, with lead-supervision by Dr. King. The position is fixed for 36 months (3 years). The postholder will lead research on assessing the impacts of bat guano on crop growth and physiology, soil health, and plant and soil microbiology. This will include performing fertilisation experiments, measuring plant traits, including above-ground and below-ground, and the collection and analysis of plant and soil microbiomes. The role involves extended fieldwork in Mexico and close collaboration with UK- and Mexico-based partners, conservation organisations, and government agencies. You will contribute to high-quality academic publications, policy-relevant outputs, and stakeholder engagement activities. About you You will hold a completed PhD in environmental microbiology, microbiome science, environmental science, or a related discipline. You will have demonstratable experience in field-based research, microbiology (field and laboratory), bioinformatics (e.g. metagenomics and high-performance computing), and handling plants and soil, particularly roots (i.e. rhizosphere collection and root traits). You will have a strong interest in environmental microbiology, plant-microbe interactions, and agriculture. You will be comfortable working independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team and engaging with non-academic stakeholders. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to contribute to peer-reviewed publications and project reports. Spanish language skills are not essential but would be helpful. You should be willing and able to undertake extended international fieldwork and work across cultural and disciplinary boundaries. This position is available for 12 months starting from 1st July 2026, working in the research group of Prof T D H Bugg, in the Chemical Biology Research Cluster in the Department of Chemistry at University of Warwick. The project will involve screening of metagenomic libraries for new biocatalysts for lignin bioconversion, and enzymology studies on the new enzymes identified. About You   Applicants should have a PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biological Chemistry or Microbiology, and should have a track record of publications in relevant scientific areas, and a track record of successful project completion. The successful candidate must have research experience of working with enzymes, and experience in molecular genetics, including bacteria other than Escherichia coli (the microbe to be used is Pseudomonas putida KT2440), and experience of working with micro-organisms other than Escherichia coli. The applicant should have experience of carrying out biotransformations using enzymes and/or engineered microbes. Experience in bio-analytical methods such as HPLC or LC-MS would be highly desirable. About the role: We are seeking an enthusiastic, organised, and highly committed laboratory-based Research Technician to join the Nanotherapeutics Lab as part of a newly funded Cancer Research UK (CRUK) research programme. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge work at the interface of neuro-oncology, nanomedicine, and translational cancer research, within a programme with clear clinical relevance and long-term ambition. The Research Technician will provide essential technical support across a range of project-specific research activities. About the role We are looking for an excellent Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a joint project between the labs of Sonja Hofer and Tim Behrens at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC). The goal of this project is to determine how neocortical and subcortical circuits interact to mediate flexible behaviour. The project will focus on the neural circuit mechanisms underlying goal switching and behavioural strategy selection, by mapping algorithmic theories of behaviour onto specific microcircuits and pathways. The applicant will use a multidisciplinary approach including in vivo imaging, high-density electrophysiological recordings (e.g. Neuropixels), behavioural assays, and molecular and genetic tools to record from, manipulate, and trace defined neural populations, with particular emphasis on interactions between the median raphe nucleus, frontal cortex, and hippocampus. About you We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a PhD in neuroscience or a related field (or who will have submitted their thesis prior to starting), and a strong interest in understanding neural circuits and behaviour. The successful candidate will have experience in rodent-based research, including handling, stereotaxic surgery, behavioural training, and neural circuit dissection techniques, as well as experience with in vivo electrophysiological recordings or imaging approaches with single-cell resolution. The postholder will be expected to design and drive independent research projects, contribute original ideas for new research directions and funding applications, and analyse complex datasets using programming tools such as Python, R, or MATLAB, supported by a solid understanding of statistics. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, with the ability to write for publication and present research clearly. The role requires strong organisational skills, the ability to manage multiple activities in parallel, a collaborative and ethical approach to research, and motivation to contribute to the mission and research environment of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre as a world-leading research institute. About the role We are looking for a Research Assistant to work on a project within the Centre for Inflammatory Disease, in the Department of Immunology and Inflammation, at Imperial College London. This post is funded by UKRI and is part of a long-term research program focused on human systems immunology and commensal-specific immune responses. This post is within Professor Petter Brodin’s group, whose laboratory focuses on the development of the immune system in early life. The team also studies variation in immune responses in health and disease, including sex differences, the effects of sex hormones on immune function, the regulatory mechanisms underlying such variation, and how the immune system adapts to environmental influences. The Centre for Inflammatory Disease (CID)at Imperial College London is a multidisciplinary hub focused on understanding the mechanisms driving inflammation and translating this knowledge into new therapies. It brings together clinicians and scientists across immunology, rheumatology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and respiratory medicine. The Centre integrates basic science with clinical research to tackle chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Through cutting-edge approaches—such asgenomics, single-cell analysis, and translational immunology—CID plays a leading role in advancing personalized medicine and improving outcomes for patients with inflammatory conditions. What you would be doing You will provide technical support  and conduct experimental work within the GIFT study (Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy and Immune Function in Trans Individuals) to determine immune system adaptation during sex-hormone treatment. More specifically, you will assist with blood sample collection from a transgender health clinic, sample processing, and perform exciting experiments such as whole blood stimulation cultures and fixation procedures, ELISA/SIMOA, and analysis by high-dimensional spectral flow cytometry. A particular focus will be on commensal-specific immune responses and their regulation by sex-hormones.
