Postdoctoral Research Scientist

JOB DESCRIPTION Grade UE07: £41,064- £48,822 per annum College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine/School of Neurological and Cardiovascular Sciences/Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research Full-time: 35 hours per week, 100% on-site Fixed-term: for 36 months The Opportunity: This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic translational research lab that has expertise in working with organoids. The position is for a senior post-doctoral research scientist and is focused on supporting the development of a novel cardiac drug screening platform, with the primary responsibility being the generation of human stem cell–derived (iPSC) cardiospheroids, subsequent biochemical and molecular testing and engagement with the development of a commercialisation strategy. The post is based at the University of Edinburgh, and the post-doctoral research scientist will work under the guidance of Professor Shareen Forbes. The post-holder will produce and test the cardiospheroids using the novel biomedical instrument developed which is currently at the prototype stage which has been designed by the investigators to overcome bottlenecks in screening for drug-induced cardiac arrhythmias. Testing will include comparison of biochemical and molecular status with electrical responses from the cardiospheroids with standard electrophysiological measurements and other modalities working alongside electrophysiologists.  Following drug exposure and manipulation cardiospheroids will be further assessed with downstream analyses using a range of molecular/cellular techniques. The post holder will work closely with engineers at Heriot-Watt University (Dr Euan Brown) and scientists in drug discovery (Professor Neil Carragher) and their respective teams in order to support the further development of the device for commercial readiness including the development of the device with an automated throughput system for cardiospheroid handling. The role also includes participation in the implementation of a Quality Management System to ensure ISO compatibility. The post-doctoral research scientist will contribute to report writing, IP reviews, business planning, and regulatory documentation, working alongside experts in commercialisation and regulatory development. The position is supported by a British Heart Foundation Translational Award to develop a diagnostic platform for screening new drugs for cardiac arrhythmias, with the goal of commercial readiness. The project offers a unique opportunity for a senior researcher to understand the steps necessary for successful commercialisation. The laboratory also hosts projects funded by charitable foundations and industry, including work on stem cell–derived islets, and comprises a multidisciplinary team of post-doctoral researchers, clinician scientists, technicians, coordinators and PhD students. Research Fellow in Plant Acoustics (biology-focus)

About the project You will join an interdisciplinary project delivered through a collaboration between the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, the School of Biological Sciences, and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southampton. The project addresses fundamental questions about how plants generate and respond to sound and what role sound may play in stress responses, below-ground processes and pollination. The research combines controlled experiments, advanced measurement and multiphysics modelling, and will generate open datasets and workflows to catalyse the emerging field of plant acoustics. We are recruiting a Research Fellow with a biology background to lead controlled plant growth and biological measurement campaigns, working closely with acoustics and modelling colleagues. They will have experience with plants, microbiomes, and bees/pollinators. Key accountabilities / duties You will: Design and execute controlled plant growth and stress-response programmes across model crops. Deliver high-quality measurements of plant physiology and growth under defined environmental and acoustic conditions. Lead below-ground sampling and analyses, including root phenotyping/architecture assessment and root evaluation. Undertake rhizosphere-related measurements including root exudates and the collection and analysis of the root microbiome Set up pollination trials, including recording bee sounds, and acoustic stimulation. Contribute to reproductive/pollination-linked measures including nectar and pollen metrics. Work closely with the acoustics PDRA to align biological protocols with measurement requirements, and with the modelling PDRA to support model parameterisation and interpretation of simulation results. Maintain accurate experimental records, contribute to data curation and support and lead publication and dissemination activities. Candidate requirements Essential PhD (or near completion) or equivalent qualifications and experience in Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, Microbiology, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrable experience designing and running controlled environment plant experiments. Experience with bee behavioural experimental design and implementation. Summary of the role The European Centre for Environment and Human Health wishes to recruit a 0.8 FTE Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the BlueAdapt research team until September 2026. BlueAdapt is a multimillion-pound project and involves 12 institutions from across 10 countries in Europe. The project brings together an interdisciplinary team of researchers, including microbiologists, epidemiologists, economists, climate scientists, policy specialists and marketers to understand how climate change can impact pathogens and antimicrobial drug-resistant bacteria in coastal waters. BlueAdapt has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement number 101057764 and by the UKRI/HM Government. Previous research has demonstrated that bathers in high-income countries are at a significantly greater risk of experiencing symptoms of infection following exposure to coastal bathing waters compared to people who stay out of the water. The successful applicant will join an international and interdisciplinary team to update and expand a systematic review seeking to quantify the risk of acquiring infections from sea bathing. The aim is to systematically investigate fundamental mechanisms using high-resolution sequencing and high-throughput methods and to determine their significance for disease development in patients. The successful candidate will be expected to apply cutting-edge technologies that combine high-throughput experimental molecular biology methods with modern bioinformatics analysis approaches. The goal of this integrative methodology is to answer fundamental scientific questions about virus-host interaction as well as to develop translational approaches for clinically relevant questions in infectious disease medicine. Intracellular commensal and pathogenic microbes utilize and invade the cellular systems of their hosts to ensure their survival, replication, and spread. The relative simplicity of many microbes and the ability to genetically manipulate them have made them ideal model systems for analyzing fundamental cellular, biological, and neurological processes, including cell death and innate immunity. Interdisciplinary research, the integration of state-of-the-art cellular, immunological, and neurological model systems, and advanced technological approaches offer the potential to deepen our understanding of host-pathogen interactions, with a particular focus on hepatitis E viruses, at the translational level in this field. Furthermore, the role of understudied molecular and cellular effectors in encounters with both commensal and pathogenic microbes will be elucidated to identify potential targets for the development of novel therapeutics. Taken together, these efforts contribute to expanding our understanding of the dynamic interplay between host and microbe and to developing new approaches for combating and eliminating pathogens. The focus is particularly on the following research questions at the interface of host-microbe interactions and their intervention: • Research and translation of antiviral drugs, in particular through the development of agents against hepatitis E viruses that either directly target viral targets or relevant host processes. • Investigation of mechanisms of antiviral therapies and resistance development against the hepatitis E virus in order to enable more effective long-term intervention strategies.
