PhD Position in Microbial Metabolism and Discovery of Enzyme Functions in Carbon

The position will be hosted by the Lab of Microbial Metabolic Interactions, embedded in both the KU Leuven Biology department and VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology. Here we have a multidisciplinary research group working at the interface of microbiology, metabolomics, and systems biology. The group focuses on understanding how microbial metabolic processes contribute to environmental carbon cycling, with a particular interest in marine heterotrophic bacteria. The project focuses on uncovering the functional roles of metabolic enzymes in marine heterotrophic bacteria that contribute to carbon cycling. The successful candidate will work with environmentally relevant microbial systems and apply a combination of experimental approaches including microbial cultivation under controlled nutrient conditions, enzyme activity assays, and high-throughput metabolomics. The aim of the project is to directly link enzyme activity to metabolic function during environmental perturbations, and to identify how microbial metabolic pathways respond to changing carbon availability. The project will involve collaboration with external proteomics facilities and data analysis partners to integrate time-resolved multi-omic datasets and generate new insights into enzyme function and metabolic regulation in environmental microbes. PhD in marine nature conservation and fisheries

About the position Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University, invites applications from outstanding candidates for a three-year PhD position in marine nature conservation and fisheries. The successful candidate will be part of the Ecology division, located in Bodø, Norway. This PhD will seek synergies between marine nature conservation and sustainable fisheries, notably by identifying opportunities for Marine Protected Areas to benefit fisheries through spillover benefits, as well as the MPA being refugia for broodstock and juveniles. PhD Fellow in Biofloc Microbiomes

The position The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway has a PhD position vacant in application for biofloc microbiome research. The position is attached to the Microalgae & Microbiomes Research Group (M2RG) at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS). The position is for a period of three years. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. Biofloc technology uses dense, beneficial microbial communities to recycle waste in aquaculture tanks, keeping water clean and helping animals stay healthy while cutting inputs. SwitchFloc is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network that will fund and train a cohort of international doctoral candidates through coordinated research, expert mentoring, skills courses, and intersectoral secondments. At UiT, this PhD will focus on the microbiomes that make biofloc work: using metagenomics (DNA sequencing to reveal which microbes are present and what they can do) and metatranscriptomics (RNA sequencing to see which genes are active under different conditions) to understand how these communities function and respond. Acute pancreatitis as a side effect of asparaginase-based treatments for Childhood ALL: mechanism and improvements

Details The most effective drugs for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) are based on asparaginase (Raja_2012). However, in up to 17% of cases, they cause a serious, life-threatening complication – acute pancreatitis (AP), which forces treatment to be stopped. Previously, attempts have been made to mutate asparaginase (Maggi_2017); however, these changes so far have not significantly reduced the pathology. Our studies (Peng_2016, Peng_2018) have identified the initiation mechanism of the pathology: stimulation of the protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2), leading to calcium overload. These findings have enabled us to propose strategies to reduce the side effects of asparaginase-based drugs for ALL (Peng_2018, Petersen_2021, Gerasimenko_2023, Lewis_2024). Currently, several inhibitors of intracellular calcium channels and/or PAR2 have been tested for this purpose. Energy supplemets (pyruvate, galactose (Peng_2018)) have been shown significant improvements. Novel mutations in asparaginase will be also tested to evaluate improvements (unpublished data). Finally, a combination of energy supplementation (Peng_2018), CRAC inhibitor (Lewis_2024), and the improved asparaginase wwill be used to reduce pathology in vitro and in vivo. Research Fellow – Climate Adaptation & Horticulture

The postholder will lead the initial development of a report and evidence portfolio that will help to inform a Horticultural Strategy for Northern Ireland as part of the Maximising UK Adaptation to Climate Change (MACC) Hub, funded by NERC and DEFRA. The post holder will design and facilitate a structured programme of stakeholder engagement across Northern Ireland’s horticultural sector, drawing on the Three Horizons framework to identify shared visions, barriers, and transition pathways for climate-adapted food production. The post is hosted within the Co-Centre for Climate, Biodiversity and Water at Queen’s University Belfast and will work in close partnership with the Climate NI Team at Northern Ireland Environment Link (NIEL) and the MACC Hub coordination team, contributing to climate adaptation-focused knowledge sprints across all four jurisdictions of the UK. PhD scholarship in antimicrobial resistance and environmental molecular microbiology

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most serious threats to human health. A multitude of different antimicrobial resistance genes can cause resistance, but they are not equally distributed across all different bacterial species or reservoirs. Most resistance genes are enzymes that are heavily influenced by different environmental conditions. However, testing resistance phenotype is often done under very standardized conditions (known as Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test AST), and those conditions are not always mimicking the natural conditions where the pathogen was isolated from. We have recently shown that temperature, pH and oxygen can drastically influence the activity of antimicrobial resistance enzymes and thus susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Even to such a degree that bacteria that show resistance under normal test conditions might be susceptible in infection sites and vice versa. We are seeking a candidate for a vacant PhD-position in microbiology with a focus on testing bacterial susceptibility and the specific activity of selected relevant antimicrobial resistance genes under different environmental conditions, including various pH, temperature and oxygen conditions. This will include phenotypic susceptibility testing, cloning of resistance genes, determination of fitness landscapes and purification and testing of the resistance proteins. Responsibilities and qualifications Your main responsibility will be to design (with supervisor’s help) and conduct laboratory experiment where you will be testing bacterial strains under different environmental conditions mentioned above. You will construct iso-genic strains with different resistance genes and test the effect of changes in environmental conditions. You will purify resistance proteins and test their activity. You will conduct competition experiments of the tested strains. With assistance from other group members, you will analyse the output, draw conclusions and present the outputs. You will communicate research results by presenting data at project meetings and international conferences and write reports and manuscripts for publication. You will engage in the general work carried out by the research group, including discussions and planning of strategies and projects, drafting research grant proposals, etc. Daily work will be in close collaboration with other researchers in the Genomic Epidemiology group and national and international partners. Job description: We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the EU-funded research project “STRONG-UR, Strategies for Optimised Bioprinting of Next Generation Tissues for Urethral Regeneration and Translation.” https://www.strong-ur.eu/. The successful candidate will have substantial hands-on experience with isolation of mesenchymal stem cells and the biological evaluation of biomaterials in both in vitro and in vivo systems. Applicants must hold: A PhD in biomedicine, cell biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related life science discipline Proficiency with isolation and expansion of mesenchymal stem cells Documented laboratory work involving primary cells and biomaterials Documented experience performing in vivo studies for biomaterials/tissue engineering applications Experience with at least some of the following methods is considered a significant advantage: Stem cell potency assays Cellular and molecular methods, including qPCR, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescence microscopy The candidate is expected to demonstrate independence in planning and executing experimental work, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary and international research environment. Research responsibilities The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to the following key areas: Isolating and characterising human and animal adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) for in vitro and in vivo models, including flow cytometry and immunocytochemical analyses. Executing functional assays to evaluate the immunomodulatory and angiogenic properties of cells. Planning and conducting in vitro and in vivo experiments to assess the biocompatibility of bioink formulations. Performing bioprinting experiments and analysing cell–hydrogel interactions, including morphological assessments using immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy. Disseminating research through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and project reports. Participating in project meetings and collaborating with national and international partners. Teaching and supervision responsibilities The candidate will be expected to: Contribute to the supervision of MSc and BSc students and support early-career researchers in the laboratory. Participate in teaching activities in areas such as cell biology, human physiology, biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomedical laboratory methods, or related courses, depending on departmental needs.
