How Do Mechanical Forces Shape Organs? Developmental Biophysics and Bioengineering of Ciliated Tissues

About the Project We invite applications from candidates eligible for UK student status for a PhD project investigating how mechanical forces contribute to development, and how these principles can be harnessed to inspire engineering solutions for tissue repair and regenerative medicine. Candidates with either experimental or theoretical backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The project will focus on ciliated tissues, such as those lining the airways, where microscopic hair‑like structures called cilia beat in a coordinated manner to generate fluid flow and transport mucus. While these systems are essential for physiological function, how they self‑organise during development to establish robust, large‑scale fluid flows remains poorly understood. This project will investigate how mechanical forces, fluid flow, and mechanotransduction drive the self‑organisation of ciliated tissues during development and wound healing. Together, we will combine quantitative experiments and mathematical modelling to uncover the physical principles underlying fluid transport in developing tissues, with relevance to tissue repair and regenerative medicine. Qualifications The applicant must hold a PhD in medical science, biotechnology, or biomedicine and have at least two years of postdoctoral experience. The ideal candidate has a theoretical background in neuroscience and perinatal physiology, as well as solid practical experience with qPCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, microscopic image analysis, and extensive experience in breeding and working with newborn transgenic mice. The postdoctoral researcher will take part of a preclinical research project with the overarching aim to determine if and how long-acting GLP-1R agonists/GLP-1 analogues act on the brainstem to achieve their anti-inflammatory properties. Subject area Neuroscience/Neuroendocrinology Subject area description Our research aims to understand if and how long-acting GLP-1R agonists/GLP-1 analogues activate neurons in the brainstem in particular (but also in peripheral ganglia) to dampen an overactive immune system. We utilize in vivo studies in genetically modified mouse models that allow us to specifically manipulate neurons that are responsive to GLP-1R agonists using chemo- and optogenetics and elimination. By capitalizing on these genetic tools, we investigate if and how the manipulations affect the ability of GLP-1R-agonists to alleviate inflammation. We combine these in vivo studies with modern histology, detecting both protein and RNA in and outside the brainstem. The outcome of our research can help identify these medications’ mode of action, but also potential novel targets for more directed future inflammatory treatments with fewer side effects. It will also add to our existing knowledge of how the brain communicates with the peripheral nervous system and the immune system to regulate our immune defense. Job assignments The postdoctoral researcher will be an important part of our research group and is expected to actively and independently drive a specific research project, with support from the project leader. The work involves planning, organizing, and conducting in vivo experiments in mice, and analysing and interpreting results. The work includes stereotactic surgery, AAV vectors, in vivo chemogenetics, ablations, laparatomies, and models of inflammation. Furthermore, the postdoctoral researcher is expected to work with in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to actively participate in group meetings, be responsible for documentation related to their own project, participate in the writing of scientific articles, and provide support with mentorship of students/doctoral candidates. Eligibility The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. Contextual modelling of IDPs in cancer hubs – from proxiomes to direct interactions: A DDLS PhD student position at LiU in collaboration with University of Toronto At Linköping University, we are announcing the position as DDLS PhD student in “Data driven cell and molecular biology”. This field covers research that fundamentally transforms our knowledge about how cells function by peering into their molecular components in time and space, from single molecules to native tissue environments. Specifically, this project aims to exploit mass spectrometry proxiome data to leverage our knowledge on how intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) bind and regulate critical protein hubs. We will do this by developing novel pipelines for predictive interaction modelling, complemented by collaborative validation through cellular and biophysical approaches. This integrated strategy will enable structural and dynamic characterisation of IDP interactions based on their native cellular context, opening novel modes to target critical interactions in cancer. Your work assignments As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20 per cent of full-time. In this position, your task will be to enhance state-of-the-art predictive modelling of IDP interactions by actively integrating proximity profiling data from biotinylated interactomes assayed by mass spectrometry (BioID). Highly dynamic intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in ~70% of proteins in the human proteome, and adopt conformational ensembles rather than fixed 3D structures, both alone and in the context of complexes. Despite recent immense progress in in-silico structural proteomics (2024 Nobel Prize to Baker, Hassabis, Jumper), the amount of experimental data on such complexes is still not sufficient to train AI protocols to reliably predict IDP interactions. Our approach will leverage data on regulatory protein hubs in cancer where we have direct access to experimental validation and will be directly applicable to other proteins with relevant deposited data. The experimental BioID technique is high-throughput and uniquely identifies both structural and transient/dynamic protein interactions within cells, providing insights into dynamic biology in-vivo. However, BioID alone cannot distinguish direct interactions from proxymediated, nor can it resolve structural details of these interactions. To address these limitations, we will develop novel pipelines for predictive molecular-resolution interaction modelling with BioID data, with resulting models to be used as hypothesis-driving in collaborative experimental labs at LiU, KI and University of Toronto. This integrated strategy will enable structural and dynamic characterisation of IDP interactions based on their native cellular context, opening novel modes to target critical IDP interactions in cancer. Position of Researcher in central tolerance induction in the thymus during normal and pathological conditions

We study patients, human thymus tissue, ex vivo and in vitro models. Duties The duties mainly include carrying out a research project independently and to publish the project results in scientific journals. Within the project we have generated data from analyses of human thymus tissue using bulk RNA-seq, Parse scRNA-seq, Visium Spatial Transcriptomics and CODEX Spatial Proteomics. The main assignment is to analyse and integrate data from scRNA-seq, including TCR-seq, and, based on the results, design and perform targeted functional immunological experiments. The experimental work may include animal studies. Additional responsibilities include supervision of students, reviewing relevant literature, writing scientific articles, participation in seminars and conferences, grant applications and collaboration with other researchers. Qualifications Applicants must hold a PhD and have a strong track record in bioinformatics and experimental human immunology, including postdoctoral experience. Project description: Mucosal immunity in the respiratory tract is at the frontline of antiviral immunity. At mucosal surfaces, B cells and antibodies of the IgA isotype are enriched and are thought to be particularly important in controlling infection. Our laboratory (www.angelettilab.com ) has made significant recent discoveries on adaptive immunity in the upper airways (Gailleton et al., PNAS 2025 and Mathew et al., J Exp Med 2026) and is actively investigating how B cell differentiate in the upper airways and how antibodies are able to block influenza infection in mucosal tissues. The group is a dynamic and collaborative environment and is also embedded within the SciLifeLab network in Sweden. This PhD project will be focused on mucosal immunology. The core goal of the project is to dissect basic immunological mechanisms leading germinal center formation, IgA class switching in the nasal tissue and protective immunity. In practice, the PhD student will utilize many methods, including, but not limited to, multicolor flow cytometry, in vivo work and single cell omics techniques. The ideal candidate should have a strong experimental drive interest within the topic of mucosal immunology. Documented experience in any of the following is an advantage: immunology work, multicolor flow cytometry or in vivo work. Experience working with viral models is not required. As in vivo work is an integral part of the project, the candidate should be willing to work with laboratory animals. You will develop novel mathematical and computational methods to understand adaptation in complex environments, where different selection pressures impose conflicting demands on cellular biology and lead to complex trade-offs. For example: better performance at high temperatures often come at the cost of worse performance at low temperatures, and bacterial resistance to antibiotics is often connected to slower growth in absence of antibiotics. From this perspective, Darwinian selection can be seen as a multi-objective optimization problem, where selection strives to balance the costs and benefits of different traits to optimally position organisms in a high-dimensional trait space. You will explore whether multi-objective optimization algorithms commonly used in engineering can help us understand how organisms adapt and evolve. The mechanisms behind this deterioration will be studied in more detail with soluble biomarkers, quantitative MRI, OCT, and measurement of cognition and with various functional tests. The MS research group also has national and international collaborations for MS registry studies, guidelines for evaluation of MS progression, and for the care and treatment of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disease (NMOSD). Duties The duties include the organization and design of studies, supervision and analysis of prospectively collected patient data, completion of manuscripts, as well as literature searches and classification of scientific material as a basis for clinical recommendations and guidelines. Qualifications Requirements for the position include being a specialist in neurology and PhD researcher in neurology. The position requires extensive expertise in neuroinflammation and clinical neurology, specifically in inflammatory demyelinating diseases such as MS and NMOSD.
