Scientific Collaborator position – Malaria & Organs-on-Chip
About us The ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research is the University of Bern’s transdisciplinary Center of Excellence for medical technology research. Its mission is to tackle unmet clinical needs and envision future challenges in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment to create viable healthcare technology solutions with imagination, agility and purpose. Its projects run from discovery and basic research to clinical translation. We are an interdisciplinary research group, the Organs-on-Chip Technologies (OOC) Lab of the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research at the University of Bern. We focus on the development of advanced in-vitro models by combining engineering, microfluidics, microtechnologies, material sciences and cell biology (see references (1-3)). PhD position in animal welfare and forest pastures
Project description A project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation is investigating a new concept for pasture-based cattle farming on 16 Swiss farms. Integrating pasture and forest is expected to offer significant potential for promoting biodiversity. Currently, a tiered, structurally diverse habitat at the forest edge is created through mechanical thinning. Cattle grazing at the forest edge could eliminate the need for machinery and provide additional impetus for biodiversity. While biodiversity indicators are being examined in a parallel doctoral dissertation, this work focuses on animal welfare and economic viability.Further information on forest edge grazing can be found here. Some parts of the project are being conducted in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. One or more short research stays in southern Sweden are possible. The work location(s) can be freely chosen. The facilities and other infrastructure of the aforementioned institutions in Bern and Zurich are available. Offices and vehicles at both locations can be used simultaneously or alternately. Project Description Our research group focuses on the molecular mechanisms of parvovirus infection, particularly host-virus interactions at cellular and structural levels. The projects address complementary aspects of B19V pathogenesis, focusing on how the virus disseminates in the bloodstream and crosses the placental barrier. One project will investigate a newly identified mechanism of viral shielding by host protease inhibitors and its impact on immune evasion, receptor interactions, and viral tropism. The second project will explore how B19V infects placental trophoblasts, replicates, and breaches the maternal-fetal interface using advanced cellular systems, organoids, and tissue models. PhD position in Structural Microbiology
Project Description The rise of antibiotic resistance has created an urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies. Anti-virulence approaches – which neutralize bacterial weapons rather than killing the bacteria themselves – offer key advantages: reduced harm to the commensal microbiome and lower selective pressure for resistance. Clostridium-derived β-pore-forming toxins are major virulence factors causing severe disease in humans and animals, and represent attractive targets for such an approach. The PhD project in the group of Prof. Benoît Zuber aims to determine high-resolution structures of Clostridium β-pore-forming toxins, alone and in complex with rationally designed peptide inhibitors, using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy and cryo-electron tomography. This work is carried out in the frame of the SNSF Sinergia consortium DISPERSE (“Designing Inhibitors Against Clostridial Pore-Forming Toxins: A Structure-Based Approach”), in close collaboration with the groups of Prof. Jean-Louis Reymond (Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmacy, peptide design and cheminformatics) and Prof. Horst Posthaus (Institute of Animal Pathology, in vivo validation). We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student who is willing to work interdisciplinary in the field of structural biology, cryo-electron microscopy, and host–pathogen interaction. PhD position – Forest edge grazing and biodiversity
Project description This interdisciplinary project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, investigates the impact of grazing on plant and insect biodiversity in the transition zone between pasture and forest at 16 sites. As a doctoral candidate, you will quantify biodiversity in the field in close collaboration with experienced scientists and land managers. A second doctoral project will simultaneously analyze the impact on animal welfare, economic viability, and forest conservation. The main work location is in Zurich (Agroscope). These research teams explore brain function, from molecules to neurons and circuits, using cellular and animal models as well as human subjects, with the long-term goal of understanding the neural basis of human behavior in health and disease. For projects on the study of brain development and in order to strengthen its team, the Laboratory of Developmental Neurobiology and Plasticity of the Department of Fundamental Neurosciences at the Faculty of Medicine is looking for a: Full-time Teaching Assistant The successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of research projects in developmental neuroscience, with a central role in coordinating experimental activities, providing academic and technical guidance, and producing and disseminating high-impact scientific results.
