Laboratory Technician or Technical Assistant – Institute of Microbiology

The position is located at the Institute of Microbiology, which is part of the “Center of Functional Genomics of Microbes (C_FunGene)” and thus situated in a stimulating research environment of interdisciplinary groups. The successful candidate will be involved in state-of-the-art techniques and methods made possible by the modern infrastructure of C_FunGene and will, for example, perform genetic engineering work, cultivate anaerobic and human pathogenic organisms, and prepare samples for qualitative and quantitative analysis of RNA using Northern blots and proteins via mass spectrometry.

Your tasks:

• Review of the repertoire of bacterial strains at the Institute of Microbiology, including human and animal pathogenic strains.
• Anaerobic cultivation of bacteria, including biosafety level 2 bacteria such as Clostridioides difficile
• Cultivation and harvesting of cells
• Construction of bacterial knockout, knockdown, and overexpression mutants
• Preparation of RNA and qualitative and quantitative RNA analyses
• Preparation of proteins from cultured cells and preparation of proteins for mass spectrometry
• Conducting internships and exercises, as well as supporting theses

Your profile:

Mandatory requirements:

• Successful completion of training as a laboratory technician or technical assistant in Germany or comparable training or equivalent knowledge and skills
• Ability to independently plan and conduct experiments
• Experience in a microbiological and/or molecular biological laboratory
• Didactic skills for the experimental guidance of students in internships and theses

Other knowledge and skills that are significantly taken into account in the selection decision include:

• Experience in the cultivation of bacteria (including pathogenic and anaerobic bacteria); genetic engineering experience, especially cloning.
• Prior knowledge in the preparation and quantification of RNA and proteins
• Good English skills or willingness to pursue further training alongside work, as well as good written and spoken communication skills in German and English.
• Ability to work in a team, but also to independently fulfill responsible tasks.
