The Institute of Microbiology and Animal Diseases (IMT) at the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Free University of Berlin is a research and teaching institute that also provides microbiological services for university facilities as well as for private veterinarians, clinics, and pathologists. It is part of the Center for Infectious Medicine and the Veterinary Center for Resistance Research (TZR). As a leading partner in the FAO Reference Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance at the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Free University of Berlin, the IMT also maintains two DVG (German Veterinary Association) reference laboratories.
Its research encompasses all aspects of bacterial animal disease pathogens and zoonotic agents.
The institute participates in several national and international research consortia. A particular focus is the investigation of resistance to antimicrobial agents and biocides.

Job description:
Molecular biological work, isolation, cultivation and stockpiling of infectious agents, phenotypic susceptibility testing of bacteria, mutagenesis of infectious agents, cell cultivation, technical implementation of the microbiology course, technical supervision of interns and doctoral students, administrative tasks.

Hiring requirements:
State recognition as a biological-technical assistant or laboratory technician with a final examination and equivalent skills and experience.

(Professional) experience:

At least 3 years of relevant professional experience

Desired qualifications:
Sound knowledge of microbiological and molecular biological methods, including microscopy techniques; sound knowledge of handling risk group 2/S2 pathogens; experience with large-scale equipment (VITEK, MALDI-ToF, Illumina MiSeq); extensive knowledge of susceptibility testing methods and the evaluation of results, as well as current standards and norms for susceptibility testing of clinically relevant bacteria; knowledge of and proficiency in common light and fluorescence microscopy techniques (including fixation and staining of infected cells); sound IT skills; knowledge of shipping regulations (dangerous goods); good English skills; organizational and didactic skills, teamwork, reliability, and the ability to work independently.
