We look forward to receiving your application!

We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science

Your work assignments

You will use different techniques in molecular biology and electrophysiology to study voltage-gated potassium channels, with the overall aim of studying mechanisms of how to improve the selectivity of drug molecules with voltage-gated potassium channels as targets. Particular focus will be on how to plan and execute electrophysiological measurements of human Kv7 channels expressed in cellular systems and how to analyze such data.

The position also entails handling available drug molecules, participating in developing new drug molecules, surgery of African clawed frog to isolate oocytes, site-directed mutagenesis to introduce disease-associated mutations, writing of scientific texts, and active participation in seminars and conferences of importance for the project and education.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Biomedicine or Bioscience (or similar) or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Biomedicine or Bioscience. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Strong skills in English and Swedish is a must.

Prospective candidates should have background knowledge and understanding of the physiological and pharmacological role of voltage-gated potassium channels, principles of electrophysiological techniques to study ion channels, and principles of how ion channels are gated and regulated. Practical experience of injection of mRNA into oocytes from African clawed frog, electrophysiological measurements with the two-electrode voltage clamp technique, and work with voltage-gated potassium channels is required. Practical experience of working with ion channel modulators is a merit.

Strong communication skills, both in written and oral formats, as well as an ability to work both independently and in a collaborative setting are required.

Your workplace

Your workplace will be at the Division of Cell and Neurobiology (CNB), at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV), in the research groups of Fredrik Elinder and Sara Liin. The Division carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within Health Sciences.

The employment

In connection with your admission to the doctoral program, your employment as a PhD student is handled. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date by agreement.

Salary and employment benefits
