Project description
The aim of the project is to investigate the evolutionary relationships between variation in brain morphology and behavioral variation at the intra-species level. To do this, the project will use three already established artificial selection lines of guppy (Poecilia reticulata) with i) different relative brain sizes, ii) different shoaling behaviors and, iii) different relative telencephalon sizes. Extensive infrastructure (>4000 aquaria, six rooms dedicated to individual and group analyses for large sample sizes) allows for artificial selection experiments, multiple analyses of cognitive abilities, mate choice, predator-prey interactions, collective movement, migratory behavior, physiology, and brain and body morphology. Molecular tools are also available in the department for analyses of genomic mechanisms underlying the observed phenotypic variation. The postdoc’s personal research interests will be important in determining the exact project.
Job duties
The position involves experimental research within the framework of the project described above. The postdoc will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, and communicating results through scientific publications and presentations at international conferences. The position also includes contributing to the research environment in the group and providing practical supervision to students and doctoral students working on related projects.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to the relevant doctoral degree is required. The degree must be completed no later than when the employment decision is made.
Assessment criteria
It is considered meritorious if the doctoral degree or equivalent has been completed no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, a previously completed degree may also be considered meritorious. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.
In the appointment, special weight will be given to scientific expertise. The applicant should have a PhD in a relevant field of zoology, such as evolutionary biology or animal behavior. A strong interest in cognitive evolution and experience of experimental work on animal behavior are desirable. Experience in general fish ecology and fish dissection is also desirable but not required.
About the employment
The position is full-time and is valid until further notice, however, for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Entry as soon as possible or by agreement.
