This PhD project will address the molecular control of microglial in Alzheimer’s disease. We have generated novel in vivo models for the study of microglial activation and its association with the pathological features of Alzheimer’s disease. We have a particular interest in translating insights from the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease into an underlying understanding of the disease process. Much of the human genetic data implicates the immune system, in particular the brain’s macrophages, including microglia. Our overall aim is to identify novel potentially therapeutic opportunities by understanding the microglial genes regulating human Alzheimer’s disease risk. To achieve this we work with biologists, informaticians and drug discovery institutes.
In the lab, we employ detailed pathological assessments with image analysis platforms (assessment of amyloid morphology and burden, microglial inflammatory response, tissue damage assessed through neuritic dystrophy and synapse loss, all considered within a spatial context), molecular assessments of disease pathology, transgenic gene manipulation and, where appropriate, deep single cell sequencing, electrophysiology and behavioural studies.
This project would best suit a PhD candidate with a background in neuroscience and/or immunology and an interest in understanding human disease, specifically Alzheimer’s disease. The ideal applicant will combine quantitative skills with experimental experience, but full training in the techniques and analytical methods will be given. Strong analytical ability, attention to detail, and confidence in experimental design are essential. Basic programming skills may be an asset. The candidate should also be collaborative, adaptable, and motivated to develop non-invasive approaches in cancer research. The exact project will be dictated by mutual interest and so those with exceptional data analysis skills and an interest in informatics should also consider this position as their applications will be welcomed. The student will work alongside another PhD student and an experienced postdoctoral researcher, with common interests, and they will have their own distinct project.
The successful candidate will be based in the well-funded UK Dementia Research Institute Centre at Cardiff University a vibrant and collaborative environment with a strong early career researcher network. They will work under the supervision of Prof. Philip Taylor as part of a collaborative team.

Funding Notes
This 3 year PhD Studentship is open to Home (UK) students.
Funding will cover UK fees and stipend at the UKRI rate (minimum stipend of £21,805 per year for your living costs).
