This is an exciting opportunity to combine advanced specialist training with diagnostic and clinical activities, teaching, and research. You will follow a structured training programme of approximately four years. Training will take place under the supervision of experienced specialists and scientists and an EVPC Diplomate (located at Ghent University).
Your job
As an EVPC Resident, you will complete an individual four-year training programme designed to provide broad and in-depth expertise in veterinary parasitology. https://www.eurovetpar.org/residencyprograms
Your training will take place within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University in collaboration with Ghent University in Belgium and will include diagnostic, clinical, educational aspects of veterinary parasitology, and research. Externships and training in other institutions such as Wageningen University and Research, Royal Animal Health, Dutch Wildlife Health Centre, National Institute for Public Health and the Environment will be part of the programme.
About forty percent of your work will be dedicated to teaching. You will teach veterinary bachelor and master students and will have the opportunity to develop your teaching skills (University Teaching Qualification, https://www.uu.nl/en/education/centre-for-academic-teaching-and-learning/teacher-development/utq-and-stq).
You will develop your expertise in different aspects of veterinary parasitology including clinical training, and diagnostic practice at e.g. the Veterinary Microbiological Diagnostic Centre of Utrecht University, and research. Topics of interest will involve laboratory diagnostics, epidemiology, host–parasite interactions, zoonotic parasites, parasite control, and antiparasitic stewardship.
The training programme will be tailored to ensure broad exposure to different aspects of the EVPC curriculum.
As a Resident in training in Veterinary Parasitology, you will:
- complete an EVPC residency training programme;
- participate in veterinary parasitology diagnostics at the Veterinary Microbiological Diagnostic Centre (VMDC) and the Veterinary Pathology Diagnostic Centre (VPDC) and discuss the interpretation of the diagnostic results with clinicians of the faculty clinics and veterinary practices in the Netherlands;
- conduct research on one of the research topics of the group (Anthelmintic Stewardship, parasitological (molecular) diagnostics) and prepare case reports leading to scientific peer-reviewed publications;
- contribute to veterinary parasitology teaching within our bachelor and master programme and share your knowledge on parasitology with (para)veterinarians, farmers, pet owners, and general public;
- participate in national and international meetings, conferences, courses and continuing education activities;
- work collaboratively with national and international colleagues from veterinary medicine, veterinary public health, biomedical sciences and related disciplines;
Your qualities
We are looking for a veterinarian who is highly motivated to pursue specialist training in veterinary parasitology and who enjoys combining research, clinical and diagnostic activities with teaching.
You have:
- a European degree in Veterinary Medicine (approved by the EAEVE); preferably a PhD;
- a strong interest in veterinary parasitology and a clear motivation to pursue an EVPC residency;
- gained at least one year of experience in the veterinary practice and/or in a diagnostic or research laboratory;
- an enthusiastic demeanour regarding veterinary parasitology teaching and outreach;
- good communication skills that will help function in a multidisciplinary and international environment;
- excellent written and spoken English;
- while teaching is conducted in Dutch, candidates who are not yet proficient in Dutch are expected to be willing to learn the language within two years.
Previous experience in veterinary parasitology, diagnostic laboratory work, research, and/or teaching is desirable. Experience with scientific writing and data analysis would also be an advantage.
Applicants must meet the applicable requirements for admission to an EVPC residency program (Alternative Residency and Training Programme in collaboration with Ghent University). The residency programme is subject to approval and supervision in accordance with current EVPC requirements.

- 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
