The State Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Bioenergy at the University of Hohenheim is seeking a doctoral researcher within the research project “BioFleCCS – CDR Upgrade for Biogas Plants.” The position is intended for candidates interested in applied research in the field of renewable energy and process engineering.
The aim of the project is to develop innovative technologies for the efficient utilization of biogas. The focus lies on the combination of steam reforming of biogas for hydrogen production and subsequent cryogenic CO₂ separation. The highly pure CO₂ can either be used for industrial processes or for storage (CCSU technology). To achieve this, experimental investigations on pilot-scale research facilities and numerical process simulations will be carried out.
The experimental work will take place at the research biogas plant of the University of Hohenheim at the “Unterer Lindenhof” research site and will be conducted in close collaboration with partners from research (Fraunhofer) and industry.
The project has a duration of three years and offers the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree (PhD).
Responsibilities:
Participation in the development, construction, and operation of an experimental facility for cryogenic CO₂ separation from biogenic gas mixtures
Conducting and evaluating experimental investigations on gas separation processes
Development and application of simulation models to describe and analyze process operations
Investigation and optimization of the integrated system consisting of biogas production, steam reforming, and CO₂ separation
Analysis and scientific evaluation of the obtained results
Presentation and publication of the results in scientific journals
Requirements:
– A completed Master’s degree, preferably with an agricultural or engineering background (e.g., process engineering, agricultural sciences, bioenergy, energy engineering, or a related field) with a final grade of “good” or better
– Interest in renewable energy, biogas, and process engineering
– Independent and conscientious working style
– Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel)
– Willingness to work with experimental setups and pilot-scale research facilities
– Valid driver’s license (Class B)
Desirable qualifications:
– Knowledge in process simulation and the development of simulation models (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, ASPEN Plus) as well as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
– Initial experience in the field of biogas, gas upgrading, or process engineering
– Teamwork skills and strong communication abilities
Application deadline : 31.03.2026
